WHERE: Temba, Sh'Ka, the Beach
WHAT: Link attempts to celebrate 'Halloween', searches for things Dustin left behind, and attempts to build a raft.
WHEN: Somewhere during November

i. Treat or Treat?

One evening, as the people of Temba and Sh'Ka reside in their homes - wherever that may be - many will find that they suddenly have a pointy eared visitor. He hasn't bothered to knock, or make his presence known before entering. He's just walked - or climbed - right in without any hesitation.

Once inside, he'll find you. And then he'll hold out his hands a small package filled with small cakes, honeyed fruits, and candies.

"Treat," he says, as he presses the package towards you.

Link may have gotten a few of the details about how 'Halloween' was meant to work a little wrong. And also the date.


ii. Mementos from Dustin (cue Get Item sound effect)

Link missed Dustin.

The other teen had been grumpy. Constantly irritable. Downright unfriendly really, most of the time. And yet...Link had still liked him. He'd been a friend, even if Link doubted Dustin would ever admit that.

But Dustin was gone now. Link wasn't sure where. But Link felt...compelled, to try and do something to look after what Dustin left behind.

Most of it was under rubble. But Link was stubborn enough to shift all the debris and rubble that was once Dustin's workshop, and search some of Dustin's other hiding places. Not that Dustin had told Link where his hiding places were. But Link spent a lot of time climbing up the sides of buildings. You could see a lot, that way.

Eventually, Link's luck and stubbornness pays off. From within the rubble, he pulls free his prize - a large sack. Reaching inside, he pulls forth an exiting find - large volcanic rocks, and clippings from plants. He holds one of the rocks, making a soft noise of appreciation as he admires it's shiny surface. Treasure!


iii. Get the duct tape, we're building a raft

One day, while at the beach, Link looked out at the ocean. Looked at those islands, just barely visible off in the distance. And wondered, what's over there?

And of course, now that he'd wondered, he just had to find out.

Over a few days, Link could be seen pulling all sorts of things to the beach. Logs from trees he'd chopped down with the Master Sword when Zelda wasn't looking. Rope he's scrounged up. Large, massive leaves from the greenhouse.

When he starts using the rope to tie everything together, it won't be difficult at all for an observer to tell what Link's building: a raft.

"Fair enough. Well, I'll go gather stuff, and I'll just check in with you every now and then to see how it's coming along. Sound good?"

And maybe he'll give Eggman a shout to see if he wants to toss one of his goofy surveillance bots on an island? Who knows, might be a good idea to have eyes on it at all times.

Link nods. Yes, that sounds good.

And when Sonic runs off, Link gets back to work. By the time Sonic comes back, he’ll fins the hat Link has made progress. A lot of progress.

In fact, the raft is now out on the water. Link stands on top, with a massive leaf in his hands. He swings it forward, trying to use it to blow gusts of wind at the sails.

It is, unfortunately, not as good at it as a korok leaf.

Sonic is back, and he's been busy! He's lugging along a couple decent sized bags full of equipment (and more importantly road trip snacks), and he also has kind of a weird thing clinging to his back. It's a little robot monkey, y'know. For reasons.

"Hey! Sorry if I kept you waiting! I had to make a quick stop in Sh'ka."

"Hi," Link says, as his eyes drift towards the...creature?...on Sonic's back. "...Hi?" he says again, less certain this time, to the robot.

He swings the big leaf again, this time trying to blow it back towards shore. Sonic's going to need to get on, after all.

"Oh, this is just a machine. I'm bringin' it along for a guy I hate."

It's not weird, don't worry about it.

As Link starts trying to blow the raft back towards the beach, Sonic starts looking maybe a little less enthusiastic about the idea of riding this thing all the way to the island. Getting cold feet? Pretty uncool.

"Sooo... Seems like this trip'll take a while, huh?"

Link sighs, a long exhale of frustration. Sonic isn't the only one who wishes the raft could move a little faster.

He shifts the giant leaf in his hands, glancing at it ruefully.

"Not as good as korok leafs," he admits.

Sonic looks the raft over as much as he can from where he's standing, and then he gets a really stupid idea.

"Hey, so, you ever heard of a speedboat?"

Link tilts his head to one side, then shakes his head. No, he's never heard of a speedboat.

"I'll have to introduce you to the concept, then."

Sonic tosses the bags onto the raft and hops on himself, setting the robot monkey down next to the mast, where it latches on.

"You'll wanna hold onto the bags. And to the raft."

Link tilts his head to one side, not really sure what he's going to be in for. But he dutifully follows Sonic's instructions anyway. One hand clasps the raft's mast, while the other curls around the bags to keep a good hold on them.

And then he waits, for...whatever's about to happen.

Once the monkey is in place and he's sure Link's got a good grip on the raft, Sonic hops off the back, grabs the raft, and starts running. Yes, on the water, because he has no chill. The raft lurches forward as he goes, hopefully Link actually does have a good grip.

Aaaand double hopefully the raft is really well built, because Sonic isn't going super easy on it.

Link does have a good grip, and it's a good thing too - because if he didn't, he'd have flown right back. Now he just holds on for dear life, as the raft zooms forward.

Sonic can't see it, but Link's eyes are wide open - and shining. The wind is blowing his hair all over his face, and they're moving across the ocean like they're flying. It's amazing.

It's like sand-seal surfing...but better!

Wet-hedgehog surfing is definitely better.

Unfortunately he hadn't considered the temperature of the water before hopping in. It doesn't slow him down though, if anything it prompts him to close the distance faster. Before long he's slowing down so that he doesn't just smash the raft into the beach, and then he hops on while the raft comes to a stop on the sand.

"Aaaand, there we go! Beats waving a leaf around, huh?"

He's trying to sound kind of smug, but it falls short with how much he's shivering. Good job Sonic you're an idiot.

Link just sits on the raft, dead still, and staring at Sonic with wide eyes.

Sonic might be shivering, but Link is buzzing.

“We have to do that again!”

This might be the most emotion Sonic's seen out of Link yet! As much as he'd like to just drive Link around on a zoom raft, they're here for a reason. And also he's freezing his entire butt off.

"We absolutely will on the way back! Aaand maybe more often once it starts warming back up again."

Link emotes! Sometimes. Once in a blue moon, maybe.

And right, they are on a mission. So Link nods, his demeanor turning serious as he turns to look at the island.

There's a chair on the beach. A chair, and a covered box.

Link moves towards it.

Oh holy crap there is a chair. Sonic might be more startled about this than he should be. Maybe a little creeped out somehow? The box isn't making it any less creepy.

"Oh, wow! I didn't think anyone actually lived out here!"

He follows Link over, half tempted to check out the box but stopping himself before he starts messing with anything.

Link has no such hesitation, and immediately opens the box. Which, since he approaches it like he would a treasure chest, involves kicking it open.

Inside are some towels, and bottles of water. From the dissatisfied noise Link makes in the back of his throat, he's not particularly impressed with this 'treasure'.

Okay fair enough, Sonic will be less cautious going forward and follow Link's example and just start kicking shit. A+ detective work!

Speaking of detectives, Sonic sure does wish his detective buddies from back home were here, cuz we got us a whole-ass mystery on our hands now. Unlike Link, Sonic is very interested in the contents of this box. As much as he wants to use one of these towels to dry off though, would that be tampering with evidence? How does this even work.

"I thought we were the only ones who were supposed to be on this planet? Unless someone the Agrii brought to Temba just decided to go rogue and moved over here?"

Link looks down at the empty chair and the box, then back at Sonic. Then he shrugs. How would he know why the chair was here?

And besides, it's just a chair and a box. Not even anything fun, like a secret stash of bomb arrows or armor. They weren't going to solve any mysteries with just this.

"Keep looking," Link suggests, before making his way off the beach. Beaches are fun, but he wants to see what's further inland.

It's a rhetorical question, obviously neither of them know why this crap is here.

"I can go take a quick look around, it'd be quicker to rule out areas where there's nothing interesting going on. Unless you'd rather stick together?"

"...Oh."

Link...hadn't really thought about how Sonic's speed meant he could just explore everything, before Link would even get started. And...it's not like he minds, really. Being first has never been something important to him.

And yet, something about the thought of Sonic just...running ahead and checking everything out while Link waits just here at the beach, has his stomach sinking.

He's picking up that vibe, at least. He can see how it wouldn't be as fun to just sit and wait while someone else finds all the cool stuff, no matter how fast they are. They're not in a hurry, they can take their time.

"Well, I don't mind changing up my routine every now and then. We'll stick together! Strength in numbers, right?"

Link nods gratefully, agreeing even though he has very, very little remembered experience in fighting as a group. Mostly he's used to being the one running off on his own.

He's glad, though, that Sonic won't leave him behind.

And hopefully, having to slow down for Link won't be too painful for Sonic. Especially since Link doesn't amble along - as they make their way inland, he runs. It might be nothing on Sonic's speed, but at least it's not a walk.

And it's not too long before they find something else. Elegant buildings, overgrown with moss and vines and tropical plants. Empty pools. Abandoned cabanas.

The chair wasn't a sign of a recent inhabitants - it was a sign of these long-abandoned ruins.

Sonic doesn't complain about keeping pace with Link. After all, he is lugging the goofy monkey robot. Maybe he'll find a good tree to stick it in.

Gonna be hard to pick a tree now, though. There's a lot more to this island than can be seen from Temba, and Sonic can't hide his excitement over this recovery. He can, however, control it, and he refrains from charging off to run laps around the place in favor of holding the monkey's head up like a camera and looking all around with it.

"Oh man, check this place out! It looks like one of them fancy vacation towns!"
