[Open] November log
WHO: Link and you!
WHERE: Temba, Sh'Ka, the Beach
WHAT: Link attempts to celebrate 'Halloween', searches for things Dustin left behind, and attempts to build a raft.
WHEN: Somewhere during November
WARNINGS: None so far
i. Treat or Treat?
One evening, as the people of Temba and Sh'Ka reside in their homes - wherever that may be - many will find that they suddenly have a pointy eared visitor. He hasn't bothered to knock, or make his presence known before entering. He's just walked - or climbed - right in without any hesitation.
Once inside, he'll find you. And then he'll hold out his hands a small package filled with small cakes, honeyed fruits, and candies.
"Treat," he says, as he presses the package towards you.
Link may have gotten a few of the details about how 'Halloween' was meant to work a little wrong. And also the date.
ii. Mementos from Dustin (cue Get Item sound effect)
Link missed Dustin.
The other teen had been grumpy. Constantly irritable. Downright unfriendly really, most of the time. And yet...Link had still liked him. He'd been a friend, even if Link doubted Dustin would ever admit that.
But Dustin was gone now. Link wasn't sure where. But Link felt...compelled, to try and do something to look after what Dustin left behind.
Most of it was under rubble. But Link was stubborn enough to shift all the debris and rubble that was once Dustin's workshop, and search some of Dustin's other hiding places. Not that Dustin had told Link where his hiding places were. But Link spent a lot of time climbing up the sides of buildings. You could see a lot, that way.
Eventually, Link's luck and stubbornness pays off. From within the rubble, he pulls free his prize - a large sack. Reaching inside, he pulls forth an exiting find - large volcanic rocks, and clippings from plants. He holds one of the rocks, making a soft noise of appreciation as he admires it's shiny surface. Treasure!
iii. Get the duct tape, we're building a raft
One day, while at the beach, Link looked out at the ocean. Looked at those islands, just barely visible off in the distance. And wondered, what's over there?
And of course, now that he'd wondered, he just had to find out.
Over a few days, Link could be seen pulling all sorts of things to the beach. Logs from trees he'd chopped down with the Master Sword when Zelda wasn't looking. Rope he's scrounged up. Large, massive leaves from the greenhouse.
When he starts using the rope to tie everything together, it won't be difficult at all for an observer to tell what Link's building: a raft.
[[ooc note: If you'd like your character to explore the islands with Link, feel free to have them express IC interest here! Alternatively, you can just let me know oocly that you'd like to get involved - PM, discord and plurk are all good. Once I know who's in and have the info from the mods, I'll put up a separate log for the actual exploration.]]

"...With more raft-surfing," he adds, with a glint in his eye. Because Link definitely won't be disappointment to have more reasons for Sonic to surf him - and some smart science people - around on the top of the ocean.
no subject
Y'know, in case Sonic gets his leg busted again.
"Should we move on? I don't think we're gonna learn much else by staring at a dead datapoint."
no subject
And he agrees, it's time to move on. So Link nods, and starts moving through the ruins again. This time, he starts heading further inward - towards parts of the place that are more heavily overgrown, where the plants and vines are reclaiming the land.
It's a bit odd, though. Because at once point he absentmindedly spots a tangle of twigs. But then he glances away, distracted by something else - and then when he looks back, the bundle of twigs seems to be in a different spot.
He pauses, a faint frown on his face. He could have sworn...wasn't that further to the left?
no subject
He pauses as well when he realizes something's caught Link's attention, but he'd totally missed the twig lump.
"What's up? You see somethin'?"
no subject
He stares forward, but nothing moves. Had it just been a trick if the eye?
“…Might have been the wind?” He says.
no subject
Sonic points at the the twiggy bundle, "you mean that? Maybe some little animal was just hiding in it?"
no subject
Of course, he immediately wonders - what kind of animal? Was it a lizard? A crab? A mouse? He wanted to know.
"Stay quiet," he whispers to Sonic. And then he crouches down, and begins to - slowly - make his way over to the bundle of twigs, as stealthy and silently as he can.
no subject
But he's also going to look the tumbleweed lookin' mass of twigs over, and then roll into a pointy ball himself. He's vibing with the tumbleweed, Link, don't worry about it.
no subject
no subject
He doesn't want to scare whatever animal is hiding in the twigs. Not until it's caught, anyway. So he stays completely, utterly still. Eyes averted slightly, so he's not staring directly at it - but still keeping in view.
And then, he waits. Will it calm down?
no subject
Sonic unballs, digs in his bag a bit and finds some SNACKS. Animals like food, if it's an animal maybe it'll appreciate some nuts and berries or something? While Link pauses, Sonic rolls a couple berries in the general direction of the twig thingy. More to the side of it than directly at it, he doesn't want to scare it off.
no subject
Clearly something was spooked. Neither of them probably expected it to be the tangle itself. Which seems to be heading straight for the nearest ruined structure.
no subject
It's not even a conscious choice; just the same instinct that comes into play when a crab starts running away from him on the beach.
Because if he stopped and thought about it, of course, he'd realise that running after it is pointless when Sonic is right there.
no subject
Sonic does take advantage of his speed at this point, but it's not to chase the tumbleweed down, it's to get ahead of Link to try to stop him. Sonic stops in front of him, far enough ahead to where he's not just going to trip over the hedgehog and eat shit.
"Dude, stop! What good is scaring it off gonna do? It was probably just checkin' us out to see what we're up to."
no subject
From this ‘safe’ vantage the creature stops. Stops and seems to unfold, just a little bit. A roundish clump of twigs lifts free and looks down at them with faintly glowing amber eyes from it’s point of safety.
no subject
But he does stop. For a moment Sonic just gets a blank, blinking look in response, as Link wonders why Sonic doesn't want to join in the chase. Doesn't Sonic like running?
But then his eyes drift, to the - creature? - now clinging to the wall. Link's eyes widen.
"It climbs!" He whispers.
no subject
"Oh, dude! I think it's one of those little plant guys! Maybe if I watch it long enough, I can figure out how they communicate!"
Assuming it tries to communicate with them at all. It was worth a shot?
no subject
One that continues to watch them. After a moment it rattles its body again, yet to the Communications datapoint in Sonic this is not ‘language’. Maybe it’s just body language. Like someone shivering in fear. The Funfronds were a shy people after all, and while the Barrys were clearly capable of defending themselves, they also seemed to prefer giving He Rows a wide berth.
no subject
Although he does wonder - if the creature is a plant, then is there any way the Agriculture datapoint can help? Even if just to identify it...
Link stays where he is, but he watches it closely.
no subject
"It's not talking, I think it's just scared. I can't say that I blame it, as far as it knows two big monsters just showed up and started messing with it, and then one started chasing it."
He glances back up at the little plant thingy on the wall. It's not hurting anything, little dude's just chilling. It's not really a big deal, right?
"We should probably just leave it alone. I don't wanna get on the bad side of an island full of those guys, we'll probably run into more later."
no subject
‘Scared’ the rustling almost seems to echo, like a parrot repeating language it may not know.
no subject
"It does talk!" he whispers to Sonic with amazement. Then, louder so the...thing?...can hear him clearly, he says. "...Hi!"
And gives it a little wave. You know, to show he's friendly. Even though he tried to chase it down earlier.
no subject
And it's only kind of talking now? Well, might as well see how this plays out. He'll just wait and see how the little dude reacts to Link before deciding how to approach this from here.
no subject
"Hi," the scratchy, parrot-like noise comes. And then, as if trying out other noises it liked. "Before."
no subject
Link loves this thing.
And it was, clearly, imitating them. Which meant there was only one thing to do.
"She sells seashells by the seashore," he says.
