Shopping Spree - OTA
List compiled Tommy set out, spending time every day all over the planet. Someone looking for weapons might find him in the same shop looking at things to serve as cooking knives. Clothing shopping? Tommy was there looking for things that could serve as aprons and pot holders and oven mitts. End up by something resembling a grocer or a restaurant? Tommy was there too, gathering supplies, asking about recipes, doing anything he could to make life better when they returned to Temba.
Right up to and including waving anyone he recognized over toward him.
"Hey, come here and smell this thing. Does this smell, I don't know, edible?"
Or perhaps something more like
"Do you think this apron would fit Lauri-Ell?"
Or even maybe
"Think this knife could hold an edge for cumato dicing?"

In any event, when the foreign item is put under his nose for a sniff, he jerks backwards. "Holy fuck! What the shit is that?!"
no subject
But at least he'd known the guy was a thing.
"I think it's something like ginger. I need it for spicing stuff I think," Tommy says, considering the thing. "And it has seeds. And we have pots, so I could possibly plant them..."
Yeah, he doesn't accept your whole idea, Eddie.
"You're going to need to adjust."
no subject
He glances around, noticing the few aliens looking his way and shaking his head. "Listen, I've been here, like, two days. Excuse me if I'm not used to this shit, yet. I'm working on it."
no subject
"Two days, huh? Yeah, you're still in the 'is that thing going to jump me' period, aren't you? Answer, probably will. Who knows. At least if you're near me you're safe."
Because, well, Tommy's going to rescue everyone, it's just what he does.
no subject
He chuckles, giving the guy a self-deprecating smirk. "Yeah, something like that." He pauses, "Wait, no offense, but why am I safer with you? I don't even know who you are."
no subject
“Superhero. Who also keeps us fed on Agra 10. You can call me Tommy.”
no subject
"A superhero? Like... Comic books and movies super hero?"
A pause. Shit. He's being rude.
"Uh. I'm Eddie. It's, uh, nice to meet you, Tommy."
no subject
He shrugs at that.
“My pleasure.”

It's utterly overwhelming to be here. He hadn't much opportunity even when living at the temple as a youngling to explore the city proper, and it's been years since he'd been in a place with so many people. And still he somehow feels all the more alone for it, adrift in a sea of people. Well, not quite alone. BD-1 beeps excitedly every so often as things catch the droid's attention. And then despite the sheer expanse of places to see, there's this uncanny habit of running into familiar faces like the speedster poking around clothing over there. These are instances that Cal won't complain about.
"It might?" he says thoughtfully as he studies the apron that Tommy holds up. "At least aprons are more forgiving than full garments when it comes to sizing."
no subject
What? Learning languages could be fun. Though a human making droid noises was probably wrong, right? Which was why he knew Cal was there to help him figure this out.
"I should get you one too, shouldn't I? Everyone deserves a sassy apron.
no subject
"Are you looking for anything else specific?" he asks Tommy.
no subject
He sighs and tilts his head. What is he looking for?
"Well, I sorta need to replace clothes that got ruined in the whole 'crash because Tony made a bike I had to race' thing."
no subject
no subject
"Back home I just used to pick things up quickly. I didn't think about it really. So I guess I'm not used to buying it anymore."
no subject
Cal's pretty sure he'd be overwhelmed looking at clothes himself. That's probably why he never bought any on Risa. The Agrii garments he and Teddy had scavenged from a supply crate back on Temba took a lot of...adjusting to be usable.
no subject
"I guess we could probably look for something for you, if you want. I could help you. I'm sorta fashionable at home. When I want to be."
ANd he thinks he could come up with some choices for Cal. Starting with dark blue. The guy deserves some blue in his life.

"Earthy," she said. "But smell isn't the only thing you need to tell if something's edible. What did they stock it next to? Sometimes markets group foods that are served together, that might give you some idea."
no subject
“That tends to work better when you’re around only humans. Here it could be grouped with stuff I can’t digest.”
no subject
After a brief moment's thought, she approached the nearest merchant and held up the strange fruit, pointing questioningly between herself and Tommy before miming taking a bite. The besalisk shook its head, its wide mouth bunching in a slight grimace, and pointed to a nearby cart filled with small, round purple fruit with magenta blossoms and white stripes, a little smaller than tennis balls. Clarice smiled widely and nodded her thanks.
"Seems like those are our better option."
no subject
“Looks nice enough. Could be a good idea to add in. I’ll make a note and take a picture of it. And still gotta find some sorta meal or flour or something, but the more fruit and veg, the better. We don’t have everything I’d want to make good flavor profiles.”
Not that he’s a good cook at all. But he fucking tries and no one else seems particularly eager to take over.
no subject
She made a deductive leap as she offered him her hand. "Clarice Starling. Came in on the First Breath this morning. ... Are you the chef on your ship, or just planning ahead?"
tThe fact that he was unfamiliar with the food, but still planning ahead, made her think he'd come in with her, maybe on one of the other ships.
no subject
Tommy takes the hand and pumps it quickly before starting to gather other things.
“Hello Clarice,” he says. “Tommy Shepherd, Twin Roses. And by some fucked up reason, I ended up running the diner in Temba. Because apparently either people can’t cook or they don’t wanna.”
Which was a bad idea. He wasn’t a good choice for any of it, especially with everyone else not interested or only helping out some.
haha I knew SOMEONE had to XD
She wasn't sure how she felt about that f-bomb: he'd been perfectly polite up until then. Maybe it was his frustration about that particular development with the diner talking. She decided to give him the benefit of the doubt for the moment.
"I know even more about navigating a market where you don't speak the language. My beau and I, we did a lot of foreign traveling over the last couple years."
no subject
“I couldn’t cook at all when I got here. Some would say I still can’t. But I do my best at it, and since I’m also the main person at the greenhouse...”
He shrugs briefly. Very briefly. His shoulders move faster than any human’s should.
“I travel a lot too. But there isn’t an English to whatever phrase book and dictionary for me to work with,” he explains with a frustrated tone. So help is appreciated. Especially since he could be seen as impatient.
