A New Friend and Other Stories of a Paladin

Greenhouse
In order to help out, Shiro had started going to the greenhouse to assist where he could. He wasn't the most knowledgeable with plants, data point or not, but he could handle jobs like watering and weeding. All tasks that needed to get done in order to make sure that the plants they did have thrived so they would grow.

Also harvesting mint as he had been spending time with the Glownies, but that was not today.

Today he had set himself to weeding, humming a little bit under his breath as he did.

Starduck
The kitchen seemed to a safe enough place on the ship to just hang out. Shiro had headed in there, settling himself at a table, sipping at his cup of tea. He was lost in thought, staring at the wall for a moment as though it might do something interesting at any moment.

Of course... it wasn't.

Glownies!
Shiro had been spending time with the Glownies ever since Tommy had introduced him to them. They were rather cute and something about them was very calming to him. Spending time with them was a productive way to look after an animal and take care of them and relax at the same time. Sometimes, he'd talk to them about things and they'd listen but not necessarily really understand and couldn't repeat. Things that were just good to get off his chest... like the fact that he still was trying to process what had happened to Adam.

But it meant that no one else heard it... maybe.

One of the days though, when he was returning back, he found he had a tagalong. One of the Glownies had snuck out and decided to follow him. It was rather happily trotting along after him, tail flipping.

"What are you doing?" Shiro asked it with a smile. "Are you trying to come home with me?"

[ooc: if your character would be around the Glownie pasture, feel free to have them overhear Shiro talking to the Glownies]

"I've eaten there a few times. It's been good. Better than food goo."

Yes, this was a thing he was used to.

"Might good. Let them explore or be able to bring them back if they get loose."

"I think the idea is both. Back home when one has flocks, they move them over a large area to not only make sure they are well fed, but are also stimulated."

They played, even if people didn't fully realize it.

"Huh... I suppose that makes sense. I never had much to do with farming back home. I really only learned about it here. I guess there is still a lot that I need to learn about."

"Farming wasn't my experience either. But one sometimes learns things over time."

Still, she was glad to say that he seemed to be intent on learning, and that isn't something all young people feel.

"Each moment learning is a good moment in life."

"That is true. I have learned a lot that I never expected I'd ever have to learn. I guess herding animals is one of them."

He smiled and nodded. "Yeah, that is the only thing we can do. At least I have the chance to."

"You might look good, young man, with a shepherd's crook, tending the charges," she teased. He seemed to enjoy the animals anyway, why not take walks wth them?

He chuckled at that. "Well, not something I never thought I would have, but I wouldn't say no if it was needed." He smiled. "Might as well if I start taking them to walk more often."

"Walking is good for the body as well," Lark smiles. "All of us should do good to take long walks. Perhaps it can be something all can partake of. Manage the flock to see it happy and healthy for our sake."

"Yeah, that is a good way to exercise. Probably one of the most relaxing ways I would exercise in years. It's always been more... physical than that. But I guess that wouldn't be bad. Especially if they are getting out as well. And anyone else who wanted to join the parade."

"Well, if they are anything like sheep, it may be more stressful than you think. Sheep are known to not be very intelligent in some ways," Lark answered with a smile. "But yes, they deserve the freedom to roam to some degree. But I will happily join the parade."

It woudl be healthy to do.

"Really? Well, I don't have much experience with sheep so I will take your word for it. But I suppose that is why they say someone blinding following others is a sheep." He shrugged. "At least these guys here don't seem too distressed even if this one decided to sneak out."

"They say that?" Lark asked, confused. That didn't make any sense at all. "Honestly? I'm shocked they didn't follow it out."

"It must just be in my world. It means someone who can't think independently." It made sense to him, but then again, he'd heard it for quite a bit of his life. "I know right? Me too. I'm curious why only one... but will also be glad if I don't have to chase all of them down."

"Yes, I suppose they are in fact a sort of people that happens," Lark sighed. She had just never heard the term. She was sad that one needed to be said.

"Maybe, if you will pardon a joke, it's the black sheep of hte flock?"

"Yeah. I've met a few who really just did what they were told and never questioned."

He laughed at that. "Yes, I suppose it is."

The Glownie, of course, didn't seem to mind. Even as they were beginning to approach the pasture, it didn't seem too concerned.

"They are lucky, to live such placid lives," Lark observed, pulling the thread to try and encourage the glownie closer. "Means there are likely not a lot of predators around we can't see but it can smell>"

Unless Glownie have terrible sense of smell.

"It seems like a rather peaceful place for them considering they just showed up when mint was accidentally let out. But then again, I've never seen them encounter a predator before. They might be pretty good fighters."

He figured Glownies had a pretty good sense of smell because they had followed the mint to find everyone else.

"They just showed up?" Lark asked, shocked. And then she laughed. That sounded quite lovely. Just lovely little creatures showing up. "A blessing from Mila. You were very lucky."

They didn't seem like fighters.

"Yeah, as I understand it. They were already here when I was, but my friend was the one who let the mint out which attracted them out of nowhere."

He smiled. "I do think that I am with them. They've been very nice to talk to."

No, they didn't to him either, but he had been surprised before.

Huh, what an interesting thing to hear.

"sheep back home love sweet clover. Maybe it's like that," Lark observed. "I'm glad you're happy with working with the Glownies, though. I love having them around, so I can be useful."

"Do they? That's interesting. Maybe these Glownies are a lot like sheep in that way. One likes clover, one likes mint."

He reached over to pet the Glownie they were still walking and it made a happy sound.

"They are good to talk to and friendly to be around. I can't imagine anyone could be bored being around them."

Were mint and clover really all that different? Lark most definitely didn't know.

"Nor can I. Perhaps, though, it would be nice if there was a herd dog. TO help keep them in line."

Shiro had no idea either. He'd never studied them at all so he had no idea if there was a difference between them. They could be the same family or different ones, he wouldn't know.

"Ah, yes, that would be nice. To run around them and help make sure they go where we want them too... or not somewhere we don't."

Dogs, yes they needed some. Perhaps even some felines or other animals suited to keeping vermin down. It wasn't like Lark could work the sort of wards to protect and preserve food.

"Alas the lack of pups."

He chuckled.

"Well, Keith does have a wolf, but that might be a little intimidating for them."
