It really does. But everything I've had made seems solid enough, and others have probably asked for much more complicated things than we have. Before it broke down the first time I had a couple of rebreathers made for Jon and Tony so we could explore the lake out here.

[The curiosity was getting the best of him.]

[With Cal having given him the directions before it won’t be difficult for him to find his way there.]

[Cal gives him a nod.]

[It didn’t take him too long. Obi-Wan’s excursions around the broken city has paid of in that he was starting to know his way around. Though the directions did help of course. The Jedi arriving with the hem of his cloak billowing around him.]

Cal?

[Calling out the Padawan’s name, he announced his presence as he made his way inside. Taking a moment to look around as he did so.]

[The space is fairly big, much of it unused but mostly cleared out. There are several bins with various parts and even complete-looking devices from Cal's excursions, although only two seem to be most used and not yet full.

A few shelves and tables have other various equipment and repairs either done or in the works. Cal himself steps through the doorway from an adjoining room, wiping off his hands on a rag. BD-1 skitters practically at his heels, beeping a greeting as the padawan grins.]

Hey Ben. Hope it wasn't too much trouble to find.

Not at all.

[Obi-Wan takes his time in looking around. His gaze passing over the various devices and equipment that was scattered around on work space. Quite the impressive collection if he say so himself.]

It seems you have made yourself quite at home here. Where did you find all of this?

Kind of, yeah.

[Cal tosses the rag onto a corner of one of the counters.]

Oh, all over the city. We've had plenty of time to poke around Of course, a lot of the stuff we find is a lot less useful. Things have been sitting around for a good while.

I took the Engineering datapoint. Figured it made the most sense. Helped out a lot too, when we were out on the ships. You'd think that after spending years dismantling and scrapping starships repairs would make sense across the board. It's strange how things work in this place.

[Ben can’t help a fond smile as he looked things over. Cal was reminding him so much of Anakin in that moment. He had loved tinkering and fixing things too. Listening to him felt a little nostalgic as it brought back fond memories of a time gone by.]

If that is where your talents lie, then yes I agree. Though I have yet to decide on which datapoint to use myself.

[He can’t deny things are strange here. Ben had started to realize that as he got to know more. It seemed that using one of the data points was the most practical thing to do.]

So where is this replicator you were talking about?

You can swap between them, I think. But unfortunately whatever you switch to overrides whatever you had from the previous. At least that's my understanding, from how it's been with others that have done so. I've only ever had the one.

[He nods towards the other room he'd come from, gesturing for Obi-Wan to follow as BD-1 hurries off ahead of them. The object in question doesn't look at all fancy, rectangular and relatively featureless in design in that spartan way that it would probably be right at home aboard their own ships.]

There it is. It's fancier on the inside. Took some work and a few more hands to put it together in the first place. Not sure exactly how it broke, but it seemed like the power shorted it out somehow.

Is that so? It seems we are just as programmable as droids here.

[The thought bothers him a bit. Everything is so strange in this place.]

In that case I suppose I will have to choose carefully.

[When his attention is then redirected to the replicator, Obi-Wan looks at it thoughtfully. It indeed looked like a rather unremarkable piece of equipment, but then looks could be deceiving.]

I see. So then how does it work?

Yeah...

[It's not exactly something Cal's thought pleasant either.]

It's pretty simple. Surprisingly so, really. You can just tell it what you want. Or feed it schematics if you have any. I think it works better with details in some cases.

Tell it? You mean speak to it like a computer or a droid?

[This thing is so foreign to him he wasn’t sure what to make of it.]

Perhaps you could demonstrate?

Pretty much. I think it has. It has a set database of things it's familiar with to replicate by just asking. And it stores the data of things it might not have had, so it can make them once it's been given the information and done so before.

[With a nod as he turns towards the machine, Cal obliges Obi-Wan then.]

A rebreather.

[It would at least be a useful demonstration. Once the replicator receives its order, the object begins to materialize in front of it. Cal picks it up and hands it over to the other Jedi.]

[Obi-Wan could only watch with amazement as the rebreather materialized seemingly out of thin air. If he didn’t know better he would say it was magic. When Cal held it out to him, the Jedi took it and turned it over in his hands.]

That is remarkable. And you said it can make anything it knows by converting matter? What matter does it use?

From what BeeDee's gathered, apparently it uses energy somehow. But it can also break down matter to use that energy towards replicating.

[Cal shrugs as he gives a wry smile.]

Don't ask me to explain it, we just managed to put the thing together. It's unlike anything I've ever seen before.

[That’s fair enough and Obi-Wan chuckles. Anakin would have likely taken the thing apart to figure out how it worked. But then Cal wasn’t Anakin. No one was like Anakin. But he couldn’t think that way, and so there was only a momentary pause before he went on.]

Can it make food? Or perhaps even a synthetic kyber crystal? I’ve noticed that you don’t seem to have a lightsaber.

Food, yes.

[There's a brief, internal cringe at the latter.]

...no. I hadn't even really thought about trying to replicate that. It didn't seem...right? I replicated parts to make a lightsaber though, but not with this one.

[That look on Cal’s spoke volumes, and Obi-Wan knew what the boy was thinking before he said it. And the Jedi reached out to place a hand on his shoulder.]

I know.

Kyber crystals are sacred, and normally I wouldn’t suggest such a thing. But a Jedi shouldn’t be without a weapon, and out here, I don’t think we can afford to be picky.

Unless you think the Agrii might be able to give you one.

[Which he highly doubted but Cal knew them better than he did.]

I know. And I'm not so sure the Agrii would be very eager to provide us with weapons without reason.

[He rakes a hand through his hair, sighing a little. ]

Even if I had my lightsaber, it wouldn't have worked. The emitter and the crystal were crushed. I'd been thinking about trying to rebuild one on and off since being here, but only recently I decided to go ahead with it. I'm going to need some help from Tony- I don't know if you've met him, but he's good at making things from scratch.

[He fishes around in one of his belt pouches, pulling out a couple of crystal shards. They glow faintly with an unmistakable sense of energy in itself.]

Know those caves I mentioned? I found them there. I think it was one but it cracked, but I'm pretty sure they're some raw form of the energy rods the Agrii use for powering things around here.

[There is a wince of sympathy at hearing that Cal’s lightsaber was destroyed. In another time and place he might have lectured the boy about it, but he has a feeling he doesn’t need to. Plus Cal wasn’t his Padawan. The mention of Tony though draws a blink.]

The eccentric man with the broken arm? Yes, I have met him.

[He found the man amusing, but wasn’t sure if he would trust him to help Cal build a lightsaber. But if Cal trusted him, that’s what mattered. Building a lightsaber was a personal thing for a Jedi. When the boy then produced crystal shards, his brows raised in interest.]

Do you really think they’ll work?

[His eyes studying the crystals as he also tried to feel them with the Force, scrutinizing them.]

[He'd be relieved if he knew he'd managed to dodge a lecture. That's definitely not something he'd want to hear, especially not about his lightsaber, not under the circumstances he'd gotten it damaged.

Cal laughs. Eccentric certainly covers Tony. There's a slight frown at the mention of the arm however.]

Yeah, that's him. Wonder what he's gotten himself up to...

[There's definitely an inherent source of energy within, alive in a resonating way although perhaps not in the same way as a kyber crystal.]

I don't know. I think they might. Someone was talking about how they wondered if the energy that came from the rods, that come from these crystals, is similar to how the energy of his homeworld works, like a cycle where everything is intertwined.

[Cal shrugs.]

Maybe it's a stretch, but there's still some kind of response from these. If it doesn't work, then I guess it'll be back to the drawing board.

[It was a habit born of Anakin’s recklessness with his own lightsaber. But after everything that happened and knowing Cal was a survivor like him and had likely lost his weapon in a terrible way, Obi-Wan didn’t have the heart to say anything about it. Times were different. He was different. Even though it hadn’t been that long for him. But a smile does come to his face at the laugh.]

That I don’t know. I had offered to heal his arm but he refused.

[Tony seemed to be quite a suspicious fellow which he supposed he couldn’t blame him for but Obi-Wan still wished the man had let him help him.]

Well, you won’t know till you try. It is my hope that it does work. However, if Tony is going to assist you with this. It might help if he had the real thing as a template?

Doubt a broken arm will stop him from doing things, either way.

[He remembers when they'd all been suffering from poisonous fish bites and the man had been quite stubborn.]

I think the main thing I need is a casing. Maybe some wiring.

[He arches a brow at Obi-Wan then.]

It might. Even when we had our components set and a kyber crystal, putting one together by sense was difficult. Having a reference would help.

Surely this replicator can help you with that?

[If it could make a rebreather he didn’t see why it couldn’t make a casing and some wires. Though wires could probably be easily found with all the broken machinery around too.

It’s then that a smile came to Obi-Wan’s face when he knew what Cal was referring to.]

It is supposed to be difficult. Building a lightsaber is the first real test of a Jedi.

[Reaching to his side he then held up his own weapon.]

I’ve done it three times now.

It could...but I didn't want to just make a copy of my master's saber.

[He smiles wanly, nodding a little as he remembers some of when he'd made his lightsaber.]

I lost mine back then. The one I've had is my master's. Most of what I've been doing with it has been manual repair, so it's...been a long time since I've ever actually put one together completely.
