Hey, listen, I know you're all really busy with your Geraldo versus Donahue thing, and that Southern lady's doing her best to be Sally Jesse without the shoulder pads? But I'm gettin' real tired of the daytime talk show, and there's nothing else on here except maybe knockoff Cheers. And your robot Sam doesn't even have a Diane, so it's pretty awful.

I touched that glowy thing in the middle of town and it put some weeeeeeird-ass junk in my head, which, hey, not the first time I touched a magic rock and it did stuff? But I'd love a little more to go on than that.

Uh, well, my brother Ben I mentioned is not my biological brother here, and his name is actually Obi-wan Kenobi, so there's at least a little confusing second name stuff going on. But he still looks out for me.

Guardians of the Galaxy sounds cool? Is that a team, or a bigger organization?

[Obi-Wankewaitasecond. nuh uh, no way. he will ... come back to that. if he meets Ezra's not-brother later and he's old and a dead ringer for Alec Guinness he is going to flip right out. but of course, since he won't be old, he'll just figure the name is a coincidence. because this is Peter.]

It sounds cool because it is cool. We're a team. We all ended up stuck together because we were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but we ended up saving everything because of it. And then we got famous, and hired to do a whole bunch of stuff, and then we'd just saved everything again before I woke up in ... Weirdo York or whatever it was.

Saving everything's a pretty big claim. [He's not even skeptical, just amused.]

My job's saving stuff, too, and I can't say that- [Then his expression shifts into confused chagrin.]

Or, well, maybe prevented a really evil dude from possibly controlling something that can change the past counts as saving everything?

It totally counts! That's like Back to the Future. Dude, that's awesome. I'd totally high-five you if we weren't talking over a little comm screen thing.

God, no, call me Quill, or Star-Lord. But you're close! Back to the Future was a movie, a classic. This guy named Marty McFly - talk about a cool name - has an old science teacher buddy who builds a car that can travel in time, only they go back to when Marty's parents were in high school, and he has to make sure they actually get together, so he can still exist. And they made a couple more, too. One they went to the future, and the other one they were stuck in the Wild West and got to be cowboys.

When I got kidnapped by space pirates, I decided I'd use it as my legendary outlaw name, you know? The kind of thing that could strike fear into people just from hearing it, because I was such a badass. Eventually it even worked! But it's what my Mom used to call me when I was growin' up, too. 'Cuz she said my Dad was an angel from the stars, and I was her little star lord. I always figured she was exaggerating to cover up the fact that he was a deadbeat. ... Turns out we were both right. He was from space, but he was still a deadbeat.

[Ezra's told enough tall tales, run enough cons and been around enough big personalities that he's taking everything said at face value for the moment, but is completely prepared for every word of it to be bullshit.]

So, you're from Earth, but your dad is some other species from somewhere else?

Yeah. He's something they called a Celestial: what a lot of people would consider a god, since he's lived for so long and he's got these crazy psychokinetic powers. But it turned out what he really wanted to use 'em for was to make everyone exactly like him. Total jerk. I was the only one of his kids who actually inherited any of his abilities, so he got it in his head I might actually help him.

He definitely thought wrong. ...It was a rough week.

A Celestial is a new one on me, but that doesn't surprise me, because if Earth exists in my universe, I'm pretty sure it's in another galaxy.
