a. trying to calm a racing mind
Getting off the ship again for a while is a nice change of pace, and while Jon hasn't actively planned to get involved in any of the trading and has been certain he wouldn't be needing anything, he still has been spending some time to acquire a couple of things. For the most part it have been clothes. But he has also picked up two knives, a small one and a larger one. Less with the intention of using them as weapons, but rather to have them as tools.
He also happened to come across what may count as the local brand of cigarettes, which is good. Especially now that he isn't confined to such a limited space and can actually have a direly needed smoke.
The Archivist has left his purchases on the ship and has wandered off to find the edge of the landmass and with it the stretching beach leading into the massive ocean that makes up the rest of this planet. There he sits down in the sand, gets out a cigarette and stares out onto the water, letting his thoughts drift and dwell and stir up emotions he had hoped to be able to keep locked up.
"...shit." He mutters to no one and pushes a hand up and under his glasses to rub his fingers across his burning eyes. Of course his thoughts would just circle back to Tony. To betrayed hopes, rejections, his own foolishness and a pain that that makes him want to claw his own heart out.
And yet he can't even bring himself to take the man's face off his phone's background.
But of course he can't do that. Not right now anyway. His phone is back at the ship and- He will do it when he gets back. If he remembers to do so. Or maybe tomorrow. Maybe.
...maybe.
b. someone mentioned very, very STRONG ALCOHOL?!
The empty glass hits the counter heavily and Jon vaguely gestures for another before returning his swaying attention to the person to his left. An unlucky, yet incredibly patient local.
"And- and-'nd- then I- aight. AIGHT! Yes? 'M right! Yes. yes..." He jabs the tape recorder sitting next to him on the counter sharply, then nods and squints at the local before declaring loudly: "'Dis! Iunno- Jus'-- Righ'ere. All 'ere. Jus'.... W-watch." Jon raises his index finger and jabs down the recorders buttons at random, then squints at it when nothing happens. "...aw, bollocks. Forgot 'bout them chicken...."
And for a moment Jon looks absolutely crestfallen since those forgotten chickens obviously mean his recorder doesn't work.
His mood changes abruptly again when a full glass is set down before him and he picks the glass up with a grin before turning to the patron on his other side. "Wha' d'you know 'bout amulshifiers? Now hear me out ... !"
Whoever that poor soul might be, they are now at the receiving end of a drunk emulsifier lecture from the Archivist.

Also, he feels it's his job to get Jon familiar with the weapon he intends to use, especially now that they're given a chance to actually do so.
"Great! Did you bring it with you? Even better. Saves a trip. I meant to make one back to the ships anyway to stow this, but whatever works."
no subject
"I will try my best not to turn your valuables into accidental targets." Jon assures as he pulls out his small gun and with one simple, yet surprisingly swift gesture along its side has the alien weapon active as indicated by two glowing bars of green and purple light coming to live along its side and a short, low whistling noise of the device powering up.
no subject
"Okay, so first, just to make sure we aren't going to blow up any rocks with one shot before I have you aiming at any, how about you shoot right there just where the waves come in. Or try to," he suggests.
no subject
The shot that erupts sends the Archivist stumbling backwards with a yelp and the resulting energy bolt darts towards the water at high speed. Not aimed low enough to hit the water right away, it travels further, its passing pushing the water beneath it away until it gets swallowed by a wave.
And all Jon can do is stare. "...shit."
no subject
Cayde continues to stare out at the water, maybe looking for any fishy casualties. "So that was a thing." He eventually glances back at Jon, brow quirked. "Ready to do that again?"
no subject
The second shot Jon fires doesn't catch him off-guard anymore and the stumbling is notably less. The shot itself is lower this time and for a moment splits the water before being swallowed by it. Jon doesn't wait for Cayde's evaluation and fires a third and a fourth time, teeth clenched and expression hard.
no subject
He holds up a gloved hand. "Okay, okay- I'd say you've gotten a good feel for her." Cayde steps over once Jon's done shooting, patting him on the shoulder. "Now let's try some targets."
Of course with how much force and range that the gun's shown to have, he's not having Jon try firing somewhere that could overlap with busy places. Looking around, he holds a finger up before scampering off across the sand. A moment later he returns, lugging a large stone in both his arms, about the size of someone's head. He drops it on the shoreline with a wet smack of sand and a light splash of water, then goes and drags Jon further up the beach before having him face the sea and the target he's set up.
"All right! Sight's usually marked by a little notch or a...thingy poking up at the middle or end of the gun. Breathe out first before you fire, and you only fire when you think you're ready. We're still dealing with stationary targets so make the best of it."
no subject
It takes Jon a bit to feel confident enough with his aim to fire his next shot, which still goes over his rocky target, but he manages to catch the recoil well enough. So he tries again to aim carefully at the rock. "...is it even possible to aim in an actual fight...?" He mutters in question before exhaling and firing again. This one narrowly flies by the rock's left side.
The third shot finally hits the target - And obliterates it, leaving Jon to stare past his gun and and the sorry remains of what used to be a rock.
"...oh."
no subject
"But you can still aim somewhat. If they had a pick of sniper rifles and depending on how much you trust your eyesight, I'd have opted that for you to try your hand at. At least you can stay stationary and support from afar. We don't know if we'll have that luxury though, so we make do with what we got."
His optics widen as Jon blows up the rock, whistling. "Makes me glad that misfire didn't completely take off my entire head when I tried one'a these things! Guess I needa find you a new target."
Cayde looks around on the ground and then picks up a palm-sized rock. "Okay, this is just to give you an idea of how to track a moving target. You can still try to hit it, but don't feel bad if you miss. Trick is you have to anticipate where it's going to be by the time you pull the trigger. You lead it a little. Ready?"
He'll wait for the Archivist to say as much before he gives the rock a good toss, not as hard as he can, but enough to give some distance from them.
no subject
Seeing what Cayde has in mind, Jon readies himself before giving the okay. And of course he misses the stone on his first try. Which probably is to be expected. "Right... This part will need some training."
no subject
"Yep. Guess that's what happens when you don't download the instructions." He snorts. "It was bigger than that one too. Fusion rifle or something maybe. Won't know for sure because I haven't seen it fire properly, but if it's anything like your handgun there..." The Exo shrugs.
Nodding as he watches Jon fire, he starts to search for another rock to throw before the first one even hits the water. "Figured as much. No worries, should be enough rocks around."
He gathers the few he finds nearby, ready to pitch. "Things're calm now, so take advantage of that fact and take your time in sighting and tracking your target before you shoot," he advises, winding back his arm to hurl the next rock.
no subject
He makes an effort to listen to Cayde's advice and focus on his target before shooting. The next two shots miss as well, the third one gets close to a hit at least as Jon tries to predict the stone's path and adjust his aim accordingly. There are attempts at gauging the speed of the shot as fell as that of the thrown rocks and make them meet.
It's the seventh try that finally pulverizes its respective rocky target, though this time the result isn't as much of a surprise.
no subject
He's had to scrounge around a bit farther for rocks, but the closer Jon gets with each shot, the more hopeful the Exo is that he'll hit. The Archivist gets a resounding whoop when he finally does.
"There you go!"
no subject
Having hit one of the tossed rocks feels like a triumph to Jon, but he's well aware that in an actual battle things are bound to look very different.
"I think I will find a quiet place to train with this one a little every day that we are here." He notes, managing to keep a little smile for the Exo.
no subject
Cayde tosses his remaining rock back and forth between his hands, nodding. "Sounds like a plan. Don't think we'll be here too long anyway, so best we make the most out of it. Does that thing needa recharge or does it have an ammo pack or something?"
no subject
"I wouldn't mind seeing it, but please let me get used to one weapon first. As far as charging goes..." He tilts the gun to the side and taps it with two fingers. "It can get charged on the ship and there are small, portable charged packs for it as well."
no subject
He nods, taking note of the need for recharging the Agrii weapons. "Good to know. Don't forget to bring backup packs wherever we end up. Also be good to figure out about how many shots you can get per pack. That thing looks like it sucks a lot out with a single shot."
no subject
He nods again at the advice that follows, attention pulled back to the Exo himself. "I'll keep that in mind - And will count my shots tomorrow after charging it back up once we get back." Or maybe he will do that later this day, even. If he gets restless enough to venture outside once more.
no subject
He'll definitely have to count his shots once they get into the hot zone.
"So, need someone to chuck a few more for moving target practice or you think we good for today?"
no subject
"But if you feel like supervising me further, I wouldn't mind the company when I come back here."
no subject
"I'm gonna go take my stash back to the ship, and then see about what other goodies I might be able to grab around here." Like knives. Bullets would be great too but he won't hold his figurative breath for those.
