a. trying to calm a racing mind
Getting off the ship again for a while is a nice change of pace, and while Jon hasn't actively planned to get involved in any of the trading and has been certain he wouldn't be needing anything, he still has been spending some time to acquire a couple of things. For the most part it have been clothes. But he has also picked up two knives, a small one and a larger one. Less with the intention of using them as weapons, but rather to have them as tools.

He also happened to come across what may count as the local brand of cigarettes, which is good. Especially now that he isn't confined to such a limited space and can actually have a direly needed smoke.

The Archivist has left his purchases on the ship and has wandered off to find the edge of the landmass and with it the stretching beach leading into the massive ocean that makes up the rest of this planet. There he sits down in the sand, gets out a cigarette and stares out onto the water, letting his thoughts drift and dwell and stir up emotions he had hoped to be able to keep locked up.

"...shit." He mutters to no one and pushes a hand up and under his glasses to rub his fingers across his burning eyes. Of course his thoughts would just circle back to Tony. To betrayed hopes, rejections, his own foolishness and a pain that that makes him want to claw his own heart out.

And yet he can't even bring himself to take the man's face off his phone's background.

But of course he can't do that. Not right now anyway. His phone is back at the ship and- He will do it when he gets back. If he remembers to do so. Or maybe tomorrow. Maybe.

...maybe.

b. someone mentioned very, very STRONG ALCOHOL?!
The empty glass hits the counter heavily and Jon vaguely gestures for another before returning his swaying attention to the person to his left. An unlucky, yet incredibly patient local.

"And- and-'nd- then I- aight. AIGHT! Yes? 'M right! Yes. yes..." He jabs the tape recorder sitting next to him on the counter sharply, then nods and squints at the local before declaring loudly: "'Dis! Iunno- Jus'-- Righ'ere. All 'ere. Jus'.... W-watch." Jon raises his index finger and jabs down the recorders buttons at random, then squints at it when nothing happens. "...aw, bollocks. Forgot 'bout them chicken...."

And for a moment Jon looks absolutely crestfallen since those forgotten chickens obviously mean his recorder doesn't work.

His mood changes abruptly again when a full glass is set down before him and he picks the glass up with a grin before turning to the patron on his other side. "Wha' d'you know 'bout amulshifiers? Now hear me out ... !"

Whoever that poor soul might be, they are now at the receiving end of a drunk emulsifier lecture from the Archivist.

"When everything's crazy around you? Maybe not as accurately as you'd like, and I don't expect you'ta become a sharpshooter after a couple of lessons," Cayde admits as he stands there a step to the side and behind Jon to watch.

"But you can still aim somewhat. If they had a pick of sniper rifles and depending on how much you trust your eyesight, I'd have opted that for you to try your hand at. At least you can stay stationary and support from afar. We don't know if we'll have that luxury though, so we make do with what we got."

His optics widen as Jon blows up the rock, whistling. "Makes me glad that misfire didn't completely take off my entire head when I tried one'a these things! Guess I needa find you a new target."

Cayde looks around on the ground and then picks up a palm-sized rock. "Okay, this is just to give you an idea of how to track a moving target. You can still try to hit it, but don't feel bad if you miss. Trick is you have to anticipate where it's going to be by the time you pull the trigger. You lead it a little. Ready?"

He'll wait for the Archivist to say as much before he gives the rock a good toss, not as hard as he can, but enough to give some distance from them.

Cayde shrugs, not going to argue that. Sometimes people just have a hunch as to what they're suited for. Guardians tended to use whatever seemed best for the occasion, but there are always going to be preferences.

"Yep. Guess that's what happens when you don't download the instructions." He snorts. "It was bigger than that one too. Fusion rifle or something maybe. Won't know for sure because I haven't seen it fire properly, but if it's anything like your handgun there..." The Exo shrugs.

Nodding as he watches Jon fire, he starts to search for another rock to throw before the first one even hits the water. "Figured as much. No worries, should be enough rocks around."

He gathers the few he finds nearby, ready to pitch. "Things're calm now, so take advantage of that fact and take your time in sighting and tracking your target before you shoot," he advises, winding back his arm to hurl the next rock.

"You aimin' to be a weapons connoisseur, Jon? I that that was my thing," Cayde grins.

He's had to scrounge around a bit farther for rocks, but the closer Jon gets with each shot, the more hopeful the Exo is that he'll hit. The Archivist gets a resounding whoop when he finally does.

"There you go!"
deal_me_in: (That's good right?)

"Maybe I'll let you hold the Ace of Spades some time. Much different feel."

Cayde tosses his remaining rock back and forth between his hands, nodding. "Sounds like a plan. Don't think we'll be here too long anyway, so best we make the most out of it. Does that thing needa recharge or does it have an ammo pack or something?"
deal_me_in: (Then I shot that guy)

The Exo pulls the hand cannon from its place at his hip, giving it a lazy spin before he grips it firmly in hand, a worn, oversized revolver in appearance with a worn black finish and white markings here and there in twin diagonal bands along its length and the symbol of a spade on its handle. "That it is," he grins. "She's no trace rifle, her shots won't cut through the water like that one there, but you know how'ta handle her an' she'll strike true."

He nods, taking note of the need for recharging the Agrii weapons. "Good to know. Don't forget to bring backup packs wherever we end up. Also be good to figure out about how many shots you can get per pack. That thing looks like it sucks a lot out with a single shot."

At least Cayde can trust Jon to do such things. He nods, even as he gives his own gun a quick check. He knows the chamber's full, but he also knows he hasn't the luxury of simply recharging, and the bullets he has left aren't even half of what he's used to carrying.

He'll definitely have to count his shots once they get into the hot zone.

"So, need someone to chuck a few more for moving target practice or you think we good for today?"

"Be my pleasure. Just give me a call then," Cayde grins.

"I'm gonna go take my stash back to the ship, and then see about what other goodies I might be able to grab around here." Like knives. Bullets would be great too but he won't hold his figurative breath for those.
