The mission could have been to fly out and pick up their laundry and Poe would have been eagerly ready to take off so long as it meant flying again. Really flying. But this was a much heftier mission, whether they were rushing out to the Agrii's aid or right into a trap they had to be ready, and Poe made sure anyone who chose to come along understood what they could be up against. He wasn't going to fault anyone for staying behind when they were going in blind.

Once they've set of Poe spends most of his time in the cockpit, even when he doesn't need to, it just feels right being back behind the controls again. BB-8 and CC-9 wander about looking to make friends, occasionally doubling back to make sure their Master actually takes a break and remembers to eat. You might catch him during one of those times, or maybe just the droids.

Tommy doesn’t think he could explain it so he doesn’t bother arguing.

“Navy? But they deal with boats on the water.”

"Do they? Mm. For us it's starships. What do you call your flying armed forces then?"

“Air Force.”

Space wasn’t something anything but SHIELD and SWORD and other similar forces dealt with.

"Makes sense," Poe nods, "So you'd come to see me, or the droids?" he asks with a teasing smirk, "Don't worry, I know they're the real draw. They've been asking about you."

“If I was looking for them I woulda searched for them,” Tommy countered. He had put together enough of a functional understanding of their language for that. Even if he couldn’t make the noises.

People who could make the noises were weird. Poe grins, and reaches to try and give Tommy's shoulder a friendly squeeze. "I like you Kid. So how was the shuttle ride over? She handle okay?"

Well, when your soul-dad is a synthezoid, it feels wrong to not speak SOME tech language. But he moves on.

"Wow, Kid? I'm practically ancient. But it was okay. The shuttle is SO small."

"Yeah, Old Man? Can't imagine how you'll feel when you get to be my age," he teases. Not that Poe thinks of himself as old.

He laughs kindly. "I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. How small are we talking?"

Old man. He can totally take that, so Tommy grins.

"I've got more years of life experience than you do, and squeezed into less time. I'm just that amazing."

How small are they talking? Too small.

"Super small>"

That one might stick. It suits the kid.

"You'll be a regular sage in a few years," he applauds with a grin.

Poe pauses to gesture around himself, holding a hand just above his head. "Like this tight? Or do you have some wiggle room?"

A lot of people would probably not agree with Poe. Tommy doesn't give a fuck.

"Years? Give me enough food and I could probably manage it in a few months."

He does follow Poe's hand and shudders to see how low that is.

"More room than that. But fuck, man. That sounds horrible."

"Get studying then, Old Man, I wanna see it."

Poe gives a sympathetic smile. He knows a lot of people can't handle being in that tight of a space. "You get used to it. Or most people do. The best pilots are on the shorter side, little more head room. You should see Ren scrunched up in his Silencer."

"Nah, I'd burn through too much of our real food stocks."

Get used to it. Yeah, that's not likely. Tommy's history was too complex for that.

"I'd rather just have plenty of space to run."

"Well space is kind of like that. Just you and the stars and as much room as you can imagine. The ship becomes part of you."

There's a longing look, and Poe looks out through the view port with a sigh. He gets it. They might go about it different ways, but the freedom and excitement that comes from speed, it's in Poe's veins.

That look on Tommy's face? It's incredulous. This he does not believe or accept.

"Nah, man. That doesn't scan."

"Maybe not for you," Poe concedes with a grin, "We ever get stuck in each other's minds again get me to show off some flying instead that depressing junk. I might convert you yet."

"You really won't," Tommy assures him. There was no way that he was going to accept this. The fact of the matter was that his claustrophobia and need to be on solid ground wasn't going to change. That was who he was and what he needed in life.

"I'd rather not be stuck in minds. People saw too much last time."
