The voice and the door suddenly sliding open was barely enough time for Tony to make himself presentable, and he still ended up on his knees on top of a table, guitar propped in one hand, more parts that had been flung in his rush to right himself still rolling or wobbling across the floor in a cacophony of betrayal until they finally settled and Tony gave one last dainty tug to smooth his shirt with a cough. Donnie's appearance at least assured him of one thing: that no one had snuck in and left the stick there in the time that he had blinked. He must have missed it. He kept his gaze carefully averted, only sneaking a glance between the kid and the mystery device to mumble, "Sorry, I didn't realize you were...here." As far as Tony had figured, he had relinquished the forge in Temba, not so much this space. One of the labs wouldn't be nearly as well appointed. Even with the tension up his back, his shoulders started to sag at the prospect of moving all of this junk to one of them.

Tony did his best to lift his chin then and pretend this was absolutely where he meant to be and the only thing interesting was Donnie's choice to remark on it, then very surreptitiously start sliding himself back to climb down from his perch. That left him looking deliberately attentive and totally not weird at all, unfortunately, in time for Donnie's question, so he had to acknowledge it somehow and managed a dark chuckle of disbelief, mouth open and working around an answer that didn't feel like his to give. At least Donnie gave him an out, leaving them both staring at the mystery object. Tony flicked a finger toward it and helpfully announced, "I didn't put that there. You can have it. Probably. The security tape is missing. That sounds bad, now that I'm hearing it out loud, but, listen, I've done worse things than steal a stick, I'd own up to that. I think."

This time when Tony's shoulders dropped, it was with incremental relief at what might have been the most generous assessment of his personality in a while, letting him move a little easier to finally slip from the table with only a faint twang from the guitar where he left it with the headphones. "If it's a glitch, it's clean," he reported, and gave a flicking gesture toward the table where a hologram cascaded in sync with the fan of his fingers. The footage he had been playing on a loop in his head was displayed there for them both to consider, Tony looking through it to track Donnie's eye across the image as it held stationary on Tony draped on his back across the table, bobbing his head subtly as he plucked at the guitar. In the space of a frame, the glint of the metal appeared on the bench across from him, his motion uninterrupted. Something had to be missing.

The image stilled, then alternated between one frame and the next, the staff was there and then it wasn't, while Tony leaned against the table contemplatively. Donnie seemed just as baffled, which didn't bode well for the path of inquiry that seemed obvious to Tony; why anyone would go to the effort. "Who else have you told about your..." he started to ask, waving a hand vaguely and coming up with, "stick parts?" Someone had to come to mind that had been just a little weird about the project.

No suspicious actors didn't leave a lot of runway. With an impatient wave, Tony cast the projected image away, not seeing any more in it that would help the thousandth time he scanned the frame. "Maybe he's been practicing," he suggested, without an alternate path forward. "His way of showing you." And encouraging Tony to find some place else to work, so his brother could make use of the amenities. Tony splayed his hands conclusively, mystery solved, portals, of course.

Tony didn't know what he'd done to deserve that look now, which might have been his reminder that he had well overstayed his welcome, but he sniffed and definitely didn't pout as he pointedly checked his nails to work the grease out from under them. Flashy people could be discreet, when it was necessary. It was just most of the time much more effective to incorporate a bit of style.

In that position, he only had to flip his hand to check his bare wrist like he wore a watch (and it was still expensive, even if it wasn't there), and answered with a question, "When did you come in here?" They couldn't have been on a hotter trail.

Donnie seemed confident about exonerating his brother from mischief, so Tony relaxed incrementally with another wary glance toward the door where the kid was less likely to burst through, and risked sidling around the table. Not very far, still to the side of it, but closer than he had been. "Okay," he accepted, hand up already to count out the possibilities left to them on his fingers, "Billy can teleport. Jon can tell things to do what he wants. Tommy can move faster than light--or fast enough to phase through matter. All allegedly, of course. One of them must want to mess with you." Or they wanted to mess with Tony, which seemed more likely, but would be much more difficult to parse, and uncharacteristically (for all of them) unkind to involve Donnie, so Tony very quickly did not want to ponder that possibility too deeply.

If the culprit had used this method to transport something from behind the locked door, that still left them with the question of the intention, because it evidently hadn't been thievery, assuming the device had ended up where it was intended. Surely, a lock of any kind could be bypassed, Tony didn't care to debate the exact percentage of likelihood, so instead produced the most obvious conclusion to him, "Got you out of it." He raised his eyebrows meaningfully, waiting for Donnie to consider why anyone would want him out of his room, and if he should have been running five minutes ago to find out.

Tony's eyes narrowed as he watched the gears turn in Donnie's head, just long enough that he started to doubt that the kid was going to reach the same conclusion and had just taken a breath to propose some alternatives and wave away the dumb idea when Donnie bolted. Tony remained where he was, mouth snapping shut to purse his lips as he bent over slowly like he could see Donnie's wake through the door as his footsteps echoed down the hall. A glance assured him that the mystery part was gone, and no new ones had shown up in its place. With a sigh, he considered the mess of the rest of the room, and how many boxes he would need to start packing.

Whether or not Tony was tracking did not diminish his surprise when Donnie went thundering by, then burst back in, leaving Tony frozen and waiting for the aftershocks to diminish before he risked glancing around again, looking for what about that presentation he was supposed to understand. He was kneeling on the floor by then, gathering the parts that had been shoved from the table, so maybe it was a problem of perspective again. "Yes," he eventually had to agree, "Last time you came in here. It was right there."

While Donnie produced his findings, Tony carefully gathered himself up with a dainty pat for any lingering debris on his clothes, and took a cautious step closer then halted with a restrained lean to eye Donnie's data with his hands planted on his hips. He was a little surprised again, not expecting Donnie to have anything to ask of him after the presentation, and his focus darted between Donnie's face and the images as he rapidly searched for a more satisfying answer than the suggestions that he had produced before. "Billy," he decided to narrow the focus. Jon likely could, too, but Tony had already said probably too much about what he was capable of, and Billy was very cavalier about his powers. "He wiggles his fingers and can make things appear, disappear, wear a hat." The problem was, "I don't know why he would, though. I mean, he wouldn't." That was supposed to sound confident, but it came out a little sideways, and one of Tony's hands escaped to flip in the air, hedging. "He's the one that convinced me to come with you in the first place, he wouldn't be messing--The Agrii did it, too. Or, their systems. Popped you right into that pod."

Maybe Billy did need a little attention, but that would have to wait because Tony had to suck his teeth then vocalize for Donnie, "So, you trust anything she says over seeing something teleport on the ship that teleports things. Okay." As long as they were clear on that, Tony had to come up with an alternative that Donnie was more likely to explore, so he suggested with increasing helplessness, "Maybe if you got to know him, a chat wouldn't seem so threatening. He's very nice, no matter what anyone's been telling you. The stuff with the bugs, that wasn't his fault."
