Alec's wandered to the center in the hopes of finding some kind of supplies or something to help make his apparent stay here a little easier. He doesn't mind camping — not his favorite activity but he can do it — but the weather is hot and the amenities almost nonexistent. He's starting to accept that he's going to have to seek out both supplies and help.
He starts at the center. He's giving the data point there a wide berth, and he's not too sure about the replicator. Currently he's contemplating the supplies box. Do these so-called Agrii want him to just ask for something? Out loud? It seems weird, and like it can't possibly work.

Similarly, Alec is browsing through the offerings at what appears to be a cross between a department store and a disaster area. He needs at least a change of clothes because his are getting a little, well, worn for the several days he's been here. It'd be nice to have something to wear so he can wash them.
He's not having much luck finding anything suitable though. Maybe he's in the wrong part of the place. Or maybe he needs to resign himself to a blanket toga for the duration of doing laundry.

The space seems largely empty, which makes Alec think he might be in the wrong place. But no, it's set up to look like a restaurant, so it must be the diner, right? Hopefully. He's hungry, and he's not quite sure of the protocol he should be following here.
"Um... hello?" he calls into the empty space. "Anyone here?"

Still getting used to using this tablet. Can anyone tell me, all the icons on this home screen seem to be misspelled but I can't find the settings menu. Any ideas?

Want to continue a TDM thread? Let me know and I can tag it back. Prefer one of the prompts there instead of the ones above? We can totally do that instead. I'm assuming the TDM as game canon but have no problem ignoring those threads if you want to go in a different direction, just let me know either way.

Have another idea entirely? Come at me here or hit me up at
sometimesamuse or via PM. Want a more specific starter for your character? Let me know, I got you. Want to handwave an initial meeting and skip intros? I'm fine with that as well, let's hash it out. And as always, while I write starters in prose I'm happy to match brackets if that's your preference. You can find information about Alec here and his permissions are here.

He keeps pace with the teen as he walks, still sipping at the gifted coffee. The explanation of the datapoints makes sense, but Alec still isn't sure if he wants to trust them. Maybe that will change in time, but he figures he doesn't have to make a decision about them right away. "Yeah, the names seem pretty obvious. Unless it's a trick and Agriculture lets you fly planes or something."
Alec, don't give the Agrii any ideas.
no subject
"Not that kind of piloting, but having planes would be nice. Or at least helicopters. For now, everyone's gotta walk everywhere. Sometimes the aliens make us go to other planets and we take the spaceships. Those are huge, but no one really goes to them when we're here, so if you wanna be a hermit in comfort, go to the hangar. Figure out which of the two ships will let you on and that one is yours."
no subject
"Now you're just trying to make me miss mass transit." No New York subway? Well it's the planet's loss, though maybe the habitable part is so relatively small as to not make it worth it. Curious point brought up about the spaceships though, and it has Alec wondering why people aren't using them for shelter. "If they're so comfortable, why is no one camping out there now?"
no subject
They get to the door of the hotel and York leads the way in. "Probably because the hangar is too far to be sociable in an efficient way. It's a long walk, so living in one of these buildings makes it easier. Especially with the shit the aliens like to throw at us sometimes, it's not good if someone gets trapped because they're out too far for rescue."
no subject
Hopefully the Agrii aren't taking notes.
"I mean, I'm all for a run now and then but I don't wanna do it all the time. Not even bicycles or something?" Alec's got the power of a speed rune should he need it but he doesn't want to need it all the time.
"Huh." Alec thinks he'd actually enjoy the hermit life, but that's probably the newness of everything talking. He'll never be a social butterfly like his siblings but he doesn't think he could stand being completely alone forever. It touches on other thoughts of aloneness and Alec nearly misses a step, distracted by the sudden tease of heartache. "So I guess it's safety in numbers to stay here too. How often do people need rescuing? Is there any worry about attack?"
no subject
"Nope, no bicycles. There was someone who had a motorcycle that made a sound like an actual horse, but she hasn't been here in a really long time. I can't think of anyone who has an operating vehicle. There's some guy with a broke down car on the beach and that's all I can think of."
Doesn't know the guy's name. He looks violent at times with an axe, so York steers miles clear of him.
"Every now and then someone's got misfortune, but the big shit we all have to deal with together. Like the stupid volcano shit. No one's really attacked us, like outside aliens."
no subject
"Huh. Guess everyone just walks everywhere then." It's probably good for the leg muscles, right? Regular exercise? But Alec recognizes that it also means the people who can cover great distances fast are probably few and fast between. That could be important.
"I guess that's good. The no attacks part, I mean," he clarifies. The whole idea of a quickly forming volcano still disturbs him. "I guess people are pretty good about communicating then too, if there's some kind of crisis happening."
no subject
"Yeah. You got the weird device, right?" York digs into his pocket and pulls his out so Alec could see what he was referring to. "Got a whole network that people send messages out on. Videos, texts, all that shit. Hope that's not a weird thing for you. We got some people who have some primitive versions of phone tech here. They're from 1980s or some shit. If it's a big crisis, usually the aliens pipe up and you can't avoid it. That's what happened for the volcano nonsense at least."
no subject
"Yeah," Alec confirms. "Don't worry, I know how to use a cell phone." Technology shock for other people maybe but Alec will be fine. Sure the tablet is a little different from what he's used to but he's confident that he'll figure it out without too much trouble.
"Good to know that the aliens care enough to warn about the big stuff. That makes me feel a little less disposable."
no subject
"Yeah, it's like a cellphone. I can't hook up to it, so it's a garbage cellphone." It is almost a surprise that the guy is comfortable with technology when it seemed like so many people came from worlds that lacked it. "I think they intervene if someone tries to kill another person. Not sure on that, don't quote me."
He gives a wave, and it comes off as dismissive. "I'm gonna go be a problem somewhere else for a bit. If you need help, don't call me. There are other people who're better at being helpful I think."
no subject
He can tell when he's overstayed his welcome though, and this guy is giving off clear signs. "Hey, thanks. I appreciate the time. And the coffee."
