Tan lines

Having lived through her fist storm, Jan could say she didn't really like them. The sure cure that kind of trauma was almost always found poolside, sipping on a strong drink and making eyes at the newest pool boy. Before she do that, she needed to work on her tan.

And so Jan had hiked out to those pretty purple sands and found herself a spot, stretching out on a towel with a good romance novel in hand. Some time later, as she rolled onto her stomach and undid the straps of her top she felt a shadow block her sun and smirk.

"Make yourself useful and get my back?" she said without looking back, offering up bottle of suntan lotion.

"Oh you're right, I'm awful at all that." Spy stuff, gambling, and reading filthy things in public.

But look at him, he's so innocent.

"Guess none of those things are really my style."

Steve, awful at spy stuff? Has she finally found the key difference between them?

"Always time to learn," she teases lightly, "I have some that are more straight up romance if that's more your style," she adds with a wink.

Yeah, because the other one putting a trenchcoat and hat over his entire costume is so good at subterfuge.

"That is probably more my style," he admits.

It works somehow, doesn't it? Their world doesn't always make sense.

"That's sweet, honestly," she says, considering what she might recommend, "You ever read any Regency stuff? Or do you like a more modern meet-cute?"

"Regency? Like Jane Austen? I used to love her books. Always thought it was a nice way to look back at a hundred years ago, you know?"

Yeah, a hundred. More like two hundred and some change.

"Heh, like that, sure. Or uh- there's this whole book series called Bridgerton, you might like it." She helpfully leaves out that while some of the books aren't so spicy a number of them are.

God Steve, you're old.

"Maybe," he says. "I'll give it a try." Jan has pretty good taste, so, if she says that it's not that saucy, and she does know Steve pretty well, he'll give it a shot.

"You'll fall in love with it," she promises, "And then we can have something fun to gossip about. Unless you have any real gossip to share?" she prompts hopefully.

He laughs. "Absolutely none." Unless it's about him, and that unfortunate time last month that he got sea urchin needles stuck in his tail. But that's not something he wants to share, sorry. It's also less gossip and just more an embarrassing story.
