Buffets and Birthdays

WHO: Tommy Shepherd, Billy Hargrove, Otherwise Open
WHERE: Various Buffets, Station Hydroponics, various in closed starter
WHAT: Tommy eating his fill (and yours), Growing Things because of course, and showing Hargrove a good time (no they aren't dating what are you talking about)
WHEN: Throughout March, March 29th in closed

I. Eating Your Fill

The advantage of places like this was that Tommy could always get as much as he wanted to eat without having to rely in protein paste to fill things out. And, well... There was always buffets. And man wasn't Tommy enjoying them now, getting himself steadily onto 'must pay double' or 'do not serve' lists. Which was fine with him.

One day might find him in an all you can eat salad bar, piling on all the alien vegetables and making notes on his comm device about what things he might want to get seeds or seedlings for. Another is a place specializing in a wealth of soups, where he's again taking notes (this time on flavor combinations for cooking). Or, if you're really lucky, you'll find him on a day where he's got three different mounds of noodle dishes in front of him, happily chomping his way through them while just sitting back and watching the alien species around him.

No matter which buffet you find him at, one thing is sure. The staff is giving Tommy a disapproving look of some variety or other, he's got a stack of dirty plates near him, and he's at his table alone. Maybe go up and talk to him. He'd be happy for a companion.

II. Growing Pains

Of course to keep himself fed and to stock up the greenhouses of the ships requires something important: some form of trading capital. And where else was Tommy going to find it than through the work he'd been throwing himself at for years? Sure, he could work as an extreme speed courier on a lot of planets they have ended up on, but the space station clearly doesn't need that. With the various types of transportation it's clear that he'd not be the best price per pound for transport, and it wouldn't learn him as much. Which is probably why anyone coming to take up Station Operations on the offer to do some work in hydroponics in exchange for seeds and cuttings will find Tommy there, at most hours of the day.

Today he's humming softly to himself as he goes through and carefully clips small handfuls of greens from some salad vegetable, meant for someone's dinner, or perhaps to prune things back for better growth. But he still smiles in seeing another He Row and waves them over.

"Hey, you here to be my new assistant? They said that there was someone new coming in to work today. I'm happy for a familiar face."

III. It's Not A Date, It's A Birthdatey | Closed to Billy Hargrove

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a bro is to make sure they have a good day. No, more than that. A great birthday. And it's something Tommy had started planning the moment they set foot on the station. Sure, he was fitting it all around his work, but he was meticulously planning something out.

And now here Tommy was, showing up at the hammock where he's more than once seen Billy sleeping near he water on the ship.

"Hey, Sunshine," he says, smiling as he nudges the hammock. "Get on your damn feet. We're going on an adventure."

"You didn't have to read The Outsiders for school, did you?"

He chuckles as the guy pushes at him. Come on man, let him chill.

"Don't you have waves to dominate, Sunshine? You going to deprive an old man of his rest and relaxation?"

Billy circles the cabana, wondering if Tommy is gonna follow and then goes back to the door. "You’re not even that old! Just because you’ve got silver hair it’s not like you’re eligible for an AARP card or anything.

Reaching down, he picks up some wet clumps of sand and flings them at Tommy. "Come down to the water with me!"

And runs off again, with those eyes bright and wide.

"Excuse you it's white," Tommy corrects. His hair is snowy and beautiful.

But the thrown sand does what nothing else did he rolls off the lounger and dodged aside with a smirk.

"We really doing this, Sunshine?"

But they are so he runs after Billy and waits until the guy is near the water. Then he moves to tackle the guy into the surf with a splash.

Of course they are. Billy isn’t sure if Tommy plays fair or not, but he’s in such a good mood that it doesn’t entirely matter. His feet hit the water and that’s all he gets before he’s being tackled into the water.

There’s a flurry of bubbles and water as he flies into it with a laugh that gets cut off. He grabs at Tommy in an attempt to pull the guy in with him for his crimes.

Oh yeah, they were crimes. He deserved his punishment, and he wasn't going to try and avoid those hands grasping at his arms and dragging him down too.

Once his head is above the water he laughs.

"This wasn't my intended day.

Billy wrestles him under the shallow water, then rolls them around in the wet sand and surf lapping over them. It felt like it did all those years ago, meeting that guy when he did surfing.

He finally stops so they can catch their breath, high enough from the water that they won't drown. And then it's only when Billy notices he's over Tommy.

Salty water laps up against them as Billy holds himself over Tommy and it's like...it's like the blond is really looking at him. Taking in the tanned skin and bright green eyes, the shock of white hair against the sand and skin.

Billy sees Tommy in this sunset light and it's so different.

Billy's world shifts.

He moves to sit up and give the guy space. "Sorry, didn't mean to trap you under all of my amazingness like that. Don't let yourself get washed away before we clean up and get that ice cream cake.

Play it off, play it off, play it off...

It would be easy to get free. But Tommy's wrestled with people for fun before, even in the surf. So he's having too much fun to even care to bring powers into it. Laughing brightly and joyfully and just having a good day with his friend.

When Billy moves he doesn't bother to leave where he is in the water, he's still laughing so hard.

But, you know, of course they have to get up.

"Alright. Let's hit the showers, Curls. I'll get your stuff back to the ship while you change after that, and then we'll hit dinner and that cake."

Oh thank God. Tommy didn't notice or realize what happened. Billy brushes sand off of him as they had back towards the cabana. "Alright then, Daisy Dukes. Showers, fresh clothes, and then dinner with dessert."

It's easy enough to find one of the shower stations, and Billy snaps the water on to rinse off salt and sand. Takes a moment of reflection without looking towards Tommy.

Act cool. This is fine.

With the rinsing done, back into the cabana so he can change. "I'll just wear this other set of clothes you got for me. Hope you weren't looking to take me some place fancy, Tommy."

Tommy nods when the suggestion of showering and is happy to lead the way to the station. He showers himself quickly and then heads back for the cabana to grab the surfboard.

When Billy shows up he winks.

"I'll carry our stuff back to the ship, change, and then be back just outside of here to take you to food. And I promise it's good and not fancy. I hate fancy places. Not enough food for a guy like me. See you shortly, Sunshine."

"Fine by me, Shepherd." He flashes a bright smile and heads back inside out of view. While he changes during Tommy's errands, it gives him time to reflect.

Was he into Tommy? He was allowed to... be like that here, right? Eddie and Steve were, so he could be. There was no Neil here, no threat of physical punishment or anything of the sort. Was he only getting attached because Tommy was the only one who had hope in Billy being a better person? Maybe there was a term or something for thinking you like-like the first person who's actually nice to you and giving you a chance.

Billy didn't even have anyone to talk to about this.

'You're like Noct and I. Interested in both. You can be that here. For the time you have.'

Billy's got his tank top halfway on when he remembers his talk with Gladio when he got his car back. Maybe he could ask him at some point. There was no way he could ask anyone from his world. They'd think him a loser that didn't know his own feelings. Gross.

Finally, Billy finishes getting dressed and heads out of the cabana with his shoes in hand. "Shepherd?" he calls out, looking around for his friend.

When Billy comes out Tommy's already there, in jeans (that definitely fit his ass well) and an emerald green shirt. Not fancy, but still nice.

"The place I picked for food is in walking distance. But I did sample it. I hope you enjoy it. Then back to the ship for the ice cream cake waiting in my room. I'll admit my brother helped make sure it would be here for you. Spelled it up for me."

"Walking distance in Tommy speed or my speed?" Billy opted for his pants before coming out, with the bottoms rolled up to keep sand off of them for now. "Once we're off the sand I'll put my shoes back on."

He grins. "Oh, magic ice cream cake. Will it give me powers? Oh wait, I have those with being strong. I could benchpress Tae."

"Your speed," Tommy promises. "Want me to carry you off of the sand, Curls?"

Because he could and would. For lulz. The he snorts at the suggestion of magic powers.

"No. They don't give powers. Other than it not melting. And that little doctor lady is small."

"Damn. I'll just have to keep being amazing without them. Good thing that isn't too hard for someone like me." He tosses his curls like a model, letting his hand go through them for a moment. "I can handle sand, so we can walk."

Once they walk out of the sand, Billy wipes his feet off before clean before slipping his shoes back on. "Tae may be small, but most of the weight is gonna be her attitude."

Though the attitude had been less to each other since they were finding a middle ground it felt like.

"Well I can carry you with yours, so lifting her would be easy," Tommy teases. "Maybe that's my real super power. What do you think?"

That gets a rich laugh from Billy before he moves to shove Tommy. "And people say I'm a dick! You're supposed to be nice to me - I'm the birthday boy."

He sticks his tongue out at the guy playfully. "This just sounds like you want to carry me to show off that speed of yours."

"I mean, I've met you, Hargrove. You sort of are a dick. But I don't mind that in a person," Tommy says with a laugh as he keeps them walking.

"I think a bit of princess carrying would really do wonders for your ego."

"If you minded it, you wouldn't have done all of that for me," with a little gesture towards the sand and surf they were leaving behind. Billy missed it already, but it didn't hurt as bad as leaving California. "And we wouldn't be best friends."

He grins so wide. "Alright, fine. You get your wish. Prince carry me to dinner, Shepherd!"

Tommy grins and throws an arm around Billy's shoulder, just for a moment. Leans in and whispers in Billy's ear.

"What can I say. I'm a master at sweeping people off their feet."

And then, because permission is given, he scoops Billy up into his arms with an effortless motion and grins at him.

"Arms around my neck, Sunshine. I'll go slow enough for you to watch this time."

Oh.

Oh.

The way the whisper sends a thrill down his spine and right back up was absolutely unexpected. The surprise of it gives Tommy plenty of time to scoop him up and he just blinks stupidly up at the guy.

God damn.

Later he will conclude that this is the best birthday ever.

His arms go around Tommy's neck as asked. "Good. I wanna see whatever sights this place has."

Really? This one? Tommy would have to do better in the future.

"Alright then. I'll keep it to only two miles an hour. Watch carefully. We'll be there in a few seconds."

Because he can't go much slower in a reasonable way.

How could this not be the best? He got to go surfing where there wasn't anything available, and he's getting ice cream cake. Of course this one is the best.

"Two miles? Wow, who knew you could move at a sloth's pace." He shifts his body to be more comfortable, which just moves him against Tommy's. Don't think about that. Don't do it.

Too late.

Because Tommy is solid and so warm against him, with strong arms holding him up like he really does weight nothing.

"I'll be counting those seconds then. One......two......"

"Don't challenge me with a timer," he laughs, and then he's taking off at what is the lightest little jog for him. And he's still eating up the distance with clear ease.

It isn't even thirty seconds before Tommy has stopped in front of a little business.

"Here," he says, clearly ready to put Billy down. "They have all these screens inside that make it look like you're out in a beach side bar, and they've got ocean sound effects. Doesn't quite look like Earth, but it's as close as I could get."

Billy still counts because he's an asshole, but he's an asshole that Tommy clearly counts as a friend. And he counts about twenty-eight seconds. The blond laughs as he gets to his feet. "Twenty-eight seconds, Shepherd. Might need to get your head checked out if you think that's two seconds!"

He looks around at the restaurant with a positive nod. "Screens huh? I mean, we're heating food in a place that's in space. Screens and sounds are good enough. Usually I'd say we go back to the surf place with our food, but no one likes sand in their food."

"Took it slow just for you, Sunshine. Didn't want you overwhelmed by the heroics here."

But Tommy can agree on no sand in his food, hard pass. He waves a protoplasmic creature over and they talk briefly through pantomime to get a table lined up.

"Alright, Je's gonna set a table up for us. We'll get some food, some drinks, and enjoy the evening, got it?"
