I. Eating Your Fill
The advantage of places like this was that Tommy could always get as much as he wanted to eat without having to rely in protein paste to fill things out. And, well... There was always buffets. And man wasn't Tommy enjoying them now, getting himself steadily onto 'must pay double' or 'do not serve' lists. Which was fine with him.II. Growing Pains
One day might find him in an all you can eat salad bar, piling on all the alien vegetables and making notes on his comm device about what things he might want to get seeds or seedlings for. Another is a place specializing in a wealth of soups, where he's again taking notes (this time on flavor combinations for cooking). Or, if you're really lucky, you'll find him on a day where he's got three different mounds of noodle dishes in front of him, happily chomping his way through them while just sitting back and watching the alien species around him.
No matter which buffet you find him at, one thing is sure. The staff is giving Tommy a disapproving look of some variety or other, he's got a stack of dirty plates near him, and he's at his table alone. Maybe go up and talk to him. He'd be happy for a companion.
Of course to keep himself fed and to stock up the greenhouses of the ships requires something important: some form of trading capital. And where else was Tommy going to find it than through the work he'd been throwing himself at for years? Sure, he could work as an extreme speed courier on a lot of planets they have ended up on, but the space station clearly doesn't need that. With the various types of transportation it's clear that he'd not be the best price per pound for transport, and it wouldn't learn him as much. Which is probably why anyone coming to take up Station Operations on the offer to do some work in hydroponics in exchange for seeds and cuttings will find Tommy there, at most hours of the day.III. It's Not A Date, It's A Birthda
Today he's humming softly to himself as he goes through and carefully clips small handfuls of greens from some salad vegetable, meant for someone's dinner, or perhaps to prune things back for better growth. But he still smiles in seeing another He Row and waves them over.
"Hey, you here to be my new assistant? They said that there was someone new coming in to work today. I'm happy for a familiar face."
Sometimes the best thing you can do for a bro is to make sure they have a good day. No, more than that. A great birthday. And it's something Tommy had started planning the moment they set foot on the station. Sure, he was fitting it all around his work, but he was meticulously planning something out.
And now here Tommy was, showing up at the hammock where he's more than once seen Billy sleeping near he water on the ship.
"Hey, Sunshine," he says, smiling as he nudges the hammock. "Get on your damn feet. We're going on an adventure."

III. This Ain't a Date, It's a goddamn Boy's Date
Now, he was dozing in his hammock for the time being, surfboard propped up in the sand was he did so. Hearing someone's feet in said sand brought him back to the waking world, so when Tommy gets to him? Blue eyes are fluttering open and he's grinning at the name. Kicks out with one dangling foot at the nudge to his occupied space. "Adventure? I think I had my share of that with the fireworks."
Despite his words, he gets upright and shakes his curls free from being tangled. "What do you have planned, Tomothy Shepherd?"
no subject
"If I tell you, it's not a surprise. Get comfortably dressed, okay? I've got plans. But I'm not ruining the surprise early, okay?"
Just give him this chance to impress you, birthday boy. Because he remembers, even if you might not, just what day it is.
no subject
"Alright, c'mon. Lemme go change into something comfortable that isn't my beach clothes." Which were just his pajamas, really. Shorts and a covering shirt. He leads Tommy out of the beach area and down to where the living quarters were. "Wait here, I'll be out in a few."
Or don't wait, because Tommy could get from Point A to Point B and back to Point A before Billy could blink. But he goes inside and changes, making sure to fluff up his curls. A simple shirt and jeans, and boots. Always boots. He passes his hand over the vase for a moment. "Be back later, Mom." And he heads back out to meet with Tomothy.
no subject
“You ready? You want to start with food or the surprise?”
Because it’s best to ask.
no subject
Then Billy makes a show of thinking it over. "Surprise first. I feel like I need one with all the shit that’s happened."
no subject
"Alright then. So it's a long way. Mind if I carry you?"
no subject
He grins at Tommy. "Sounds like you just wanna carry me around to show off your strength."
no subject
So yes, maybe he does want to impress Billy just a little.
no subject
Because of course he was going to compare someone else to his own strength. Billy knows his worth after all. He pauses. "Nothing I need to bring my axe for, right?"

I
He wishes Tommy would let him help keep him this well fed back home.
"How've you been?"
no subject
He's not a boy, he's not growing, but he's happy to indulge.
"I haven't been banned from this one yet. But give me some time on that. I'm good though. Eating well, figuring out stuff for the future. And, well, plans."
no subject
"Very cryptic," he notes, gesturing for him to go on, "What sort of plans?"
no subject
"Hardly cryptic. It's Sunshine's birthday at the end of the month, and I can tell he needs a good one. So I'm going to make sure I can make one for him. Too bad I can't find anywhere to surf here."
HE will absolutely be finding somewhere to surf here.
no subject
"You need any help with that, or is it a personal mission?"
"You see the way everyone round here is treating Soldier?" he asks, toying absently with the chain round his neck.
is the chain something tommy should notice?
"He's a California boy who likes sun, beaches, and has bright blue eyes and light brown hair that is clearly going to have blonde highlights in the summer months. What other nickname would you suggest? I call him Curls and Chuckles too. Those going to make you give me that weird look as well?"
He remembered using it the first time, trying to bring Hargrove down from a panic attack. The way the guy had brightened up with it... Tommy had been right, he thinks. Will be right. When the guy isn't constantly laboring under his death or the trauma or the abuse, when he has a chance to grow, he might still growl but he's going to be sunny as fuck.
"It's a personal mission, but I'll take help. He... reminds me of me in more than a few ways, Billy. Me before you guys staged a jail break. I don't think he's had a good birthday all his life, and I'm going to fix that, like you guys did for me."
His first birthday with the Young Avengers (after Kate realized that maybe Tommy wasn't really ready to share his birthday with Billy yet) had made him feel like he had people to belong to, a place where people cared. Hargrove needs that too. And somehow, Tommy's going to manage it.
"Suppose I can talk you into magicking up a chocolate ice cream cake? He's never had one. I promised him one, at New Tick."
Because Hargrove had needed something good to look forward to and Tommy had tried to give it to him.
But speaking of his brother's crush, Tommy sighs and nods.
"Yeah. I think I saw a group milling around Keith too. It's a Fleet thing I think. But I don't get why they're doing it to Boss Scruffy," clearly Soldier's picked up a new nickname at some point. "It's almost like they aren't fully nervous around him. And the guy really looks at people like they should be scared of him and he doesn't understand why they aren't."
:3 yes
"I'm glad he's got someone who knows what that's like looking out for him then." Someone who understands. "Yeah, of course, I can do that. Any uh- design or anything? A message? Candles? Just let me know what day you need it, it won't keep too long."
The dog tags are tucked under his shirt, though as he toys with the chain there's the occasional glimpse of metal. He smiles fondly. "I think he could use less people being nervous around him." Though not for the same reasons as his latest fans. "...he acts different for them. More like Bucky. It's kind of weird seeing him like that."
no subject
"Probably no design or anything needed. But candles. The number ones. For nineteen."
God, was he ever that young? Yes. So long ago.
"And the twenty-ninth. I'll message you on the day that matters. So, now that we've cleared that up, want to explain what's with the new jewelry? I already know why you're still fixating on the Boss."

growing pains
"Yes," he says. "Yes, I'll do it. What are we doing?"
no subject
"Surprised you're not putting your patented all American charm to work for us that way, but let's do what we can do. Come on. I need someone to take the calibration unit and check each outflow port for proper flow levels. Let me show you how it's done."
no subject
"But sure, I think I can do that," he says, following Tommy.
no subject
Tony's clearly number one. And Tommy's number two. Don't ask. It's just fact. God, what the hell were people on? Did they just not like muscles? Muscles are hot? Steve Rogers as lickable muscles. What the absolute fuck?
Okay, whateve,r moving on.
"Okay, whatever. Let's just help people with no taste then. You have any datapoints? Wait, no, Billy mentioned you at the hospital, so you're medical, right?"
no subject
"Yeah, I'm medical. But I can help you with whatever. And I'm good at picking up heavy objects." He is really trying for Tommy not to kick him off of this project.
no subject
"No, I mean, that's good. You've got some basic understanding of data outputs on flow and stuff, right? This is sorta like that."
no subject
Yeah, this explanation's not for him. Haha.
no subject
He guides Steve over to a supply cabinet where he picks out a gauge and a datapad. "Better be ready to pay attention because I'm on pruning duty and I've got a lot to get done, so I only want to explain this maybe five times."
