[storm] come get steve he's a menace

Oct 10th - ~14th

Someone probably should have told Steve Rogers to stay put, but it's Steve Rogers, so he's doing no such thing. Unfortunately for everyone around him, he's lost his serum, which means that he's currently swimming in his shirt and had to cut a new hole in his belt just to hold his pants up, because he doesn't have time or resources to go to Alien Target to get a new set of clothes.

If you're lucky, then you'll meet him at the hospital, where he'll be tending whatever wounds you have, extremely carefully.

And if you're unlucky, then he's out on town trying to gather supplies or find food to bring back, or even just to check in on other people. It seems that no one remembered to remind Steve that he's no longer resistant to whatever's in the air, so he doesn't travel long distances. And whether he ducks inside wherever you are just to breathe a little easier, or whether he's outside looking like whatever he's carrying is bigger than he is, well. He's struggling a little.

And if you're really, really unlucky, Steve might be in the middle of engaging with one of the creatures. What he lacks in combat ability, he has in spades in actual learned skill, so even though he's having a real hard time with it because there's no power in his kicks and he'd absolutely get bodied by a large rodent, he's still out here trying. He's just in need of an assist.

Oct 15th, by Alien Target Gate

Somehow, luckily, Steve's managed to stay alive, and he's run into a couple uh, familiar-adjacent faces. After he parts ways with them, he heads on over to the department store in order to find the gate so that he can help shut it down. With his acrobatic skill, resistance to poison, and newly-acquired energy shield, he's much-better equipped than he had been to run around town.

He makes it late enough to see people gathering around it, though the creatures keep coming out so it's not like it's hard to miss. "Behind you!" he shouts as he tosses his shield at one of the demo dogs, knocking it to the side and catching his giant laser frisbee.

Will it be alright, Steve? Will it??

Time to put his grown up pants on (if he wore pants, anyway). He sits back up with a groan and takes the pill.

"Unchanged so far. These things take some time to kick in, don't they?"

Not very long at all probably, but Sonic is a very impatient person.

"Yeah, just let me know when that is. Should be relaxing your muscles, but I don't know how it'll metabolize with your system. You've uh, got a unique physiology."

Sorry Sonic. "Does Tae normally set your wounds?"

"She probably would if I got hurt more often? Normally I'm real good at avoiding it. Last time I talked to her was a couple months or so ago? Someone bled all over one of the rooms here so I made her a few mops with the replicator."

He didn't ask all that, Sonic. Maybe the rambling is the pain killers starting to kick in?? Or maybe he's just feeling anxious and chatting is helping, who knows.

Oh, wow. That sounds like it was a mess. Though he does notice that Sonic is very chatty, so he does want to time how long it takes for the dose to kick in and how strongly it does, and wants to monitor him just in case.

"Well, if that ever happens again, give me a call. I'm pretty good at cleaning." But also: "Tell me more about this place. And your experience here."

Good call, because he's still on the counter next to the sink and if he flops the wrong way he's going to eat the floor.

"Sure, I can-- Kevin, right? No, no, not Kevin. I'm sure there was a 'V'- Steve! That was it!"

Sonic, please.

"Man, I don't like to complain, right? But this place kinda sucks. There's either nothing at all going on, or everything is happening all at once. My first couple months here were totally dead, at least for me? But then one month most people got beamed up by some aliens or something for some thing called Calibrations where I guess they got their heads screwed with? I wasn't there, I couldn't say what happened, but everyone says it was really bad. And then there was the volcano like right after that, and we were all stuck underground for like a month. Tommy and I especially hated that. And now there's this storm with the monsters and stuff... I think I hate it here? But the people are cool, definitely like most of the people I've met here. So the place sucks, but the people make it worth it."

The more he talks, the more obvious it is that his pain killer is kicking in. He may be chatty, but he's starting to sound pretty tired.

Sonic, please... Steve is all right with being called Kevin he supposes, but it's nice that he remembers his actual name.

"Yeah?" Steve says, while he does a few more checks on Sonic. "Hey, try to stay awake, will you?" He needs to keep an eye on the poor kid. But at least if he falls asleep it'll be easier to get a second opinion.

"All that sounds like a lot to deal with. But makes sense, given what this place is like. Guess I'll have to ask someone else about the aliens, since I thought we were all alone. Wonder how come they didn't get trapped here to help."

"The Agrii? I dunno, they're up on their space ships or whatever. I haven't tried to contact them myself yet, everything was so busy after the volcano thing that I just never thought about it..."

He trails off a bit, probably starting to doze off a bit. Either that or he's thinking really hard and its taking the last of his energy, could be that. He manages to shake himself awake, though. Steve said try not to sleep, so he's gonna try not to sleep!

"Oh! Uh. This doesn't hurt so bad right now. Like I can still feel it? But its not like. Horrible."

That's helpful information, right?

Oh great. Yes, yes it is. That also metabolized a little faster than Steve had anticipated, so he does have to watch Sonic. "Well, maybe we could try again after this," he says, because he doesn't know what an effort it is to contact the Agrii, but surely they'd want to come help rebuild their own home?

Or at least give some resources and instruction?

"You keep giving me status updates about your leg. I'm gonna try and see what other diagnostic tools we've got." Besides physically prodding around.

Maybe it's just because Sonic's tiny. Either way, he's not complaining. Like part of him hates feeling all sluggish and punky like this? But at the same time he's definitely glad the pain has dulled.

Apparently the Agrii can't physically come to the planet?? For reasons that Sonic can't remember at all right now. But he does have the communications data point, so maybe he can just figure out how to ask them himself. Maybe he doesn't even need the comms data point for that? Thinking's too much effort right now so he's just gonna like. Stop.

"Sure thing, bud. Thanks for the help."

"No problem. It's my job to make sure you get better so that you can do whatever it is you're supposed to be doing." Usually it's Steve's job to go out and fight things, but he's currently indisposed.

And, honestly, it's better he's back here and not out there. For the moment.

"Think things are gonna stay this way for awhile?" he asks, since this is his first event.

"Can't say for certain, but it seems like weird things happening usually last between a couple weeks to a solid month... If this follows that trend, we're gonna be in a lot of trouble for a long time."

Boy, but he sure hopes it's not going to be that long. If that's the case then he sure did just get taken out of the fight in the first round like a scrub. It's just shameful.

"Well, that's not forever," Steve answers, all optimistic. He thinks he could deal with this for a month, as long as - "But you gotta stay off of this leg, alright?" Yeah, he's sure he'll see more of Sonic.

"So what, are you a racer back home?" Maybe all hedgehogs are insanely fast and Steve never noticed.

"Heh, you're right, it's not forever. I'm just impatient."

He'll definitely see more of Sonic, especially if he's still around the hospital after they thrash the Mindflayers. Of course he's going to go fight a giant monster on a bum leg as soon as he's able. Is it broken? Doesn't matter! Gotta go fast! ~~He will regret this~~.

"I mean, I like racing, but there aren't many people who can keep up with me. Actually, most of them either want to kill me, or kinda can't stand me. Mostly I just fight robots."

"Wait, people want to kill you because they can't keep up with you?" Yeah, he's not really understanding the logic here. So he'll just, continue to be confused.

But that would explain why he gets into trouble so much that he's constantly in the hospital, it seems.

"Oh, no, it's the people that can keep up-- I have a lot of enemies, hahah. It's not related to the speed thing, though. Except I kind of use it to kick their butts with? I-- I can't really explain too good right now, I think?"

He can barely stay upright man give him a break.

Yeah, he'll unpack this later.

"Okay, well, why don't we talk about something else. What about friends from home? Are any with you?" Partially because he finds it easier to talk about how cool his friends are and partially because he needs to know if he's gotta study like, otter anatomy.

There's a lot to unpack here, buckaroo. And look, here's more!

"One friend. Kind of? His name is Knuckles, he's an echidna, but he's not the Knuckles from my world. I dunno, there's some kinda alternate universe thing going on? We both remember events happening differently, or some things happening for one of us that never happened at all for the other, or have completely different people in our lives that the other's never heard of. It feels super weird."

It's a lot. Knuckles is one of his best friends back home, but he feels like he barely knows this guy.

"Oh, don't worry, there's a lot of that going on. Got a handful of people who know me from home, but I only know a couple of them back." And also since this is before the Avengers meetup, the ones that Steve knows are also both avoiding him for personal reasons.

So, yes, point of contention, but he's not gonna think about it. "Think you'll work it out with him?" Steve has also never actually seen an echidna in real life.

"It's kinda nice to know that I'm not the only one dealin' with it. Still sucks that it's a thing, y'know? But yeah, I mean, we get along just fine, it's just a little confusing sometimes."

You know maybe it's a good thing that Steve's never seen an echidna before, because Knuckles would look absolutely nothing like one of those, hahaaa.

He definitely has a skewed idea of what an echidna or a hedgehog look like.

"Guess that's not something I can give you advice on," he says. "But Tommy seems to know a whole lot about the different universes. Probably his brother, too."

"Yeah, maybe I'll ask them about it sometime. It's kinda the least of my worries though, I guess?"

Considering, y'know, everything else going on with the storm and the monsters.

Yes, there's all that to be worried about, but Steve thinks that maybe Sonic should rest and let someone else worry about them for a bit.

"Well, I'm benching you for the time being, kid."

Jokes on you, Kevin, Sonic can't stop worrying! But he can sit still and rest for a while. I mean the muscle relaxers are kind of making that choice for him, but still.

"Yeah, that's fair. I'd probably just get under people's feet right now anyway. I don't have to stay on the sink though, do I?"

"No, that was just so I could wash out your wound. Might need you to sit back on it if we have to rinse some more when we change your bandages."

Hopefully not too much, but he doesn't want to risk an infection.

"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I just don't wanna be in the way in case someone else needs it."

Now it's time for Sonic to very awkwardly and perhaps overly cautiously shimmy his way to the edge of the counter top and try to reach the footstool with his good leg. It has the same energy of a toddler trying to climb off something that's way too big mixed with a stupid cat stuck up a tree, but to his credit he's not complaining?
