And a Time to Every Purpose

I. A Time to Plant
It had taken... a little longer than he'd wanted but Donnie's finally found a place to plant what flora samples he'd saved before the volcano evacuation. He's picked an area in the northwestern part of the city and spent some time pushing aside rubble and setting up a rough perimeter to mark the area off, a square of dirt roughly six feet length and width.

Finally he's ready to transplant things, and with the sleeves of his hoodie rolled up, he does so. His right forearm is bandaged up and around his hand, which he frowns at once he realizes he'll have to get it changed out for all the dirt it's collected, but what can you do?

Another hole prepared, another plant eased in. He carefully gathers the dirt around it, patting it flat. When he hears someone's approach he tenses just a little, but the fact that it's day eases his guard, if just a tiny bit.

"You don't by any chance have the plant people on speed dial, do you?" he asks, though he hasn't looked up to see who it is.

II. A Time to Lose
With still no word about the shuttles, Donnie wonders that no one's gone to check. Then again, given everything that's been needed to be repaired and cleaned up, he supposes people have just been too busy.

He's prepared to be disappointed about the continued absence of the shuttles.

He is completely unprepared for an absent hangar.

"Wha-??"

The area's blank, the building... but if it had collapsed completely then it would have surely left more of a mess, wouldn't it have? So he's running up the road to where it is, or was, or should have been, and the closer he gets, the stranger it is. By the time he comes to the end of the road, which at a glance seems to stretch further along, the turtle's frowning. "Not gone..." he murmurs, brow furrowed as he brings up a hand before abruptly jerking back wide-eyed, with a jolt. Or perhaps from a jolt.

III. A Time to Cast Away Stones
He hadn't really found a space he actually wanted to claim as his own, and with the volcano and aftermath still fresh in his mind, he's a little hesitant to look. But if he wants to do more things, having his own workshop and lab is- in his mind- a necessity.

It's even harder with so many places leveled or more damaged, harder still to tell what's sturdy and what's compromised. Donnie pokes around some of the buildings in the northeastern sector of the city, eyeing the outsides before ducking into a doorway to inspect the inside.

IV. A Time to Break Down
At some point he gets tired of looking at broken buildings and decides to stick to his roots, slipping underground and into the sewer system. It'd probably be a good idea to see if the tremors had caused any damages. Well, new damages. It doesn't look like much upkeep has been done with things here, so Donnie tries to be extra careful as he makes his way along the darkened tunnels.

He's opted to wear the hoverboots Tony had gifted him, just in case there's any trouble spots. But he's lived in the sewers of New York City so he highly doubts this one has anything it can throw at him that he can't handle.

Unfortunately for Donnie, the hedgehog is small and fast, and in the blink of an eye he's suddenly standing behind the poor turtle.

"I don't see anyone else doing a PSA! How are we supposed to know there's someone dangerous out there if nobody's talking about it? Guys, be on the look out for-- uh...

"A girl.

"With. Teeth? It's uh. Not a lot to go on, is it. You really don't have anything else?"

He glances in Donnie's direction. Really bro, this description isn't really good enough to be called vague.

There is a thud as Donnie had more or less made a full-on lunge and completely neglected to take into account the hedgehog's speed.

"-and ow."

He gets back up, brow twitching as he looks back at Sonic before his irritation abruptly melts into uncertainty at being put on the spot. "Wearing a dress or something? Covered in blood?" He gives an overexaggerated shrug.

Sonic at least isn't turning the communicator around to film Donnie, so he doesn't have to worry about looking like a goof on camera. The expression on Sonic's face though is one of realization, like it's just dawned on him that he has absolutely no plan here. It's fine, that's basically how he does everything.

"...Okay. Look out for the girl who looks like she's from every horror movie with a scary girl in it ever. You can't miss her.

"Aaaand if she happens to be listening--"

Yeah he's absolutely about to challenge her to a weird fight. Donnie quick be the adult.

Cue Donnie dragging his hands over his face.

At least until he hears that lead-in. He may not be Sonic-fast or vampire-fast but he is a ninja and with proper motivation can be fairly fast.

Which is why he's on his feet and scrambling up beside his annoying pal to try throwing a hand over his mouth or his face. He needs to stop doing things with his injured one, honestly.

"-no, no! That is it! You said you would not!"

Sonic's too focused on trash talking to dodge Donnie this time, eyes going a bit wider when a turtle hand suddenly clamps over his mouth. They stay wide as Donnie reminds him that he SURE DID say he wasn't going to fist fight a terrifying girl, and he fumbles a bit to turn off his communicator. Oops, haha. It's fine, he made his PSA, that's definitely all that happened.

Then he reaches up to free his face from turtle hand. Carefully, as Donnie decided to sling his injured on at him.

"My bad, sorry. I just got caught up in the moment, heh..."

A shame you can't even edit anything, although maybe that's something a comm's person would be able to do. Puts a real damper on any planned video uploads though.

Where was he? Oh right.

Another sigh drags its way out of him as Donnie retracts his hand, rubbing at the bandages anxiously. "I'll say. If she was listening, she'll know I outed her and have a new target besides," he says as he looks at Sonic pointedly.

Yeah okay, maybe Sonic could have thought that out a little better, but this is just what he does. He lives life on the fly! Aaand doesn't always consider the consequences of his actions until it's kinda too late, but that's okay! He can totally fix it!

"Okay, I... could have handled that better, but it'll be fine! I'll just stick with you for a while, and if she decides to pull anything on you, I'll handle it. She can't just get away with attacking people, man, who knows who else she's hurt?"

Donnie looks about to object, however having ~~a bodyguard~~ someone else around does have its appeal. He hasn't been going out at night since he'd gotten attacked, not that being nudged into more normal hours of operation has done anything to make his sleep schedule any better.

Part of him wonders if Sonic can handle it, another part of him just feeling that familiar ache of homesickness. The hedgehog isn't Raph, but his head and heart's in the right place.

"Thanks," he says with a half-smile. "And...agreed. I hope she hasn't attacked anyone else, but I mean, who knows." And then there's that whole matter of her vanishing before she could've enjoyed her meal.

Sonic looks a bit relieved, he'd been worried that he'd pissed Donnie off with that stunt. He wouldn't have regretted it, mind you. People can't protect themselves from someone dangerous if they don't even know about said danger, after all.

"Heheh, thank me if I'm actually able to make good on all that big talk. Until then, I guess we're roomies!"

He is absolutely going to take being a turtle body guard seriously. Maybe too seriously, but that's fine.

Mad as he may have been about it, Donnie can't really disagree with the intent. He just highly questioned the delivery.

"Hah. Well...I guess you can help me find a better place to stay if you're going to go that far," he notes, grinning crookedly. Hey, what better way to scope out places than to have someone fast do it for you?

Maybe he'd get annoyed about the bodyguard situation later. He did like his space, but for now, Donnie's got no real reason to complain about the extra company.

Sonic also likes his space. He can't run and babysit at the same time, after all.

"I think I can manage that. Big place? Smaller place? Some kinda workshop/living space combo?"

Uh he does not need to be babysat, thanks.

Donnie snap-points. "The last one. Workshop space is a must." If there's no place for a workshop then what is the point!

"Maybe it's a good thing I never got a location nailed down before the volcano thing. On the bright side, there's less places to have to look through..?"

Sorry, bodyguarded, haha.

"Everything's a fixer-upper now, that's for sure. I think I have a pretty good idea of what you're lookin' for. My buddy Tails back home had a set up like that."

It's a sad truth, but maybe it'll also at least reveal the places that are sturdier than others. And even if repairs are necessary, it's might make less work of trying to really customize things, depending on the situation. When you've lived in a sewer all your life, you can only improve!

"Oh right, the one who invents things!" Well, at least that's less Donnie will have to try explaining.

And Sonic's never really had a house, so this'll be an improvement for him as well. Kind of. He mostly just crashed on Tails' couch and ate his food.

"That's the one. You've got the same vibe as he does."

Well great now Sonic's feeling homesick. IT'S FINE THIS IS FINE.

Technically Sonic started the homesick trend first so it's only fair. ...okay, it's kind of sad.

Donnie's grin falters at the edges, but he turns away, eyes settling upon the empty space where the hangar had been. Or probably is, just...that it's masked? He's still not sure what's up with that.

"Anyway, wonder if anyone else's noticed...this whole situation."

Hah he totally is.

Once Donnie's attention returns to the weird weird weird sight in front of them, Sonic does the same, his own grin fading as he crosses his arms. Just because he's thinking real hard!! Not because he's bummed himself out!!

"Kinda hard to miss, isn't it? ...I realize I say that as the guy that's run into the weird barrier three times, but."

Yyyes, that is exactly it. No awkward emotions here, nope.

Donnie does however have to smirk a little at the hedgehog at that reminder though, shaking his head a bit. Haha, you ran into this thing three times.

"Maybe they're just preoccupied with the state of everything else in the city and haven't gotten around to check," he suggests.

None at all!!

"Yeah, that's possible. There's been a lot going on lately, it's easy to lose track of things. If the Agrii did this, they would have told us, right?"

"One would assume so anyway... Or at least they let us know things as it suits them. I'm not sure how long this has been like this though, but you'd think they'd have said something by now. Unless they're unaware that the network's back up. Or maybe there's a problem on their end? That'd be kind of concerning..."

Donnie pulls his goggles down, making a face. "Aaand just as I expected, I cannot get a proper reading on the thing because it glitches out things just like the shields underground did."

"Well of course, that would just make things too easy."

Sigh. Sure would be nice if the Agrii were just a liiiiittle more reliable. Though if something had gone wrong on their end that was outside of their control, that'd be pretty bad, haha.

"The ships were already gone, right? For repairs or something? What's the point of doing all this if the ships aren't even there? Maybe it wasn't even the Agrii? Not expecting an answer, just kinda... thinking out loud, I guess."

"Honestly I wouldn't mind a little easy mode at this point. It feels like we were dropped off starting on Survivor mode. ...which I guess is pretty much what this is."

Donnie looks down before picking up a rock, bouncing it in hand before he tosses it at the shield, frowning before he shakes his head, shoving up his goggles again.

"Yeah, I think they were fixing them with the intent that the shuttles would be able to take us to visit the Agrii? Aaand then we never saw them again." And now they can't even see the hangar.

"Conspiracy theory time; sounds to me like someone's tryna keep us away from them, yeah?"

Like maybe the other, douchier aliens? Of course Sonic has no proof for that, that's why it's a theory!

"Alternately, the hangar's getting a super cool upgrade? I like that theory better, honestly. Some good news for once would be pretty cool."

"Hangar upgrade could be cool, I don't know. Good thing I didn't store anything in here, otherwise I'd be really annoyed being cut off from it."

Donnie taps his fingers against his chin. "But otherwise, what else are shields for other than to keep people away? Maybe this is remnant of a double-layer defense from the volcano eruption? There's proof around the perimeter of the city that some kind of a shield had been established."

He slides a look over at Sonic. "Wonder if the hangar in Sh'Ka's in the same state. Actually I haven't been over there yet since we got out, so I have no idea what the status of the other city is. Is the train even working?"

"Beats me, but we can go check. The train's not my favorite, way too slow, but I haven't been able to get to Sh'Ka any other way. There's like, a force field in the tunnel? Which I also ran into. Maybe I should just try going around..."

There's probably a very good reason not to just got charging off, but that's never stopped Sonic from doing a stupid thing before.
