And a Time to Every Purpose
WHO: Donnie-ma-tello and you
WHERE: Temba
WHAT: Being a rebellious teen or something
WHEN: Mid to late Sept.
WARNINGS: N/A
NOTES: Will match pose format!
I. A Time to Plant
It had taken... a little longer than he'd wanted but Donnie's finally found a place to plant what flora samples he'd saved before the volcano evacuation. He's picked an area in the northwestern part of the city and spent some time pushing aside rubble and setting up a rough perimeter to mark the area off, a square of dirt roughly six feet length and width.
Finally he's ready to transplant things, and with the sleeves of his hoodie rolled up, he does so. His right forearm is bandaged up and around his hand, which he frowns at once he realizes he'll have to get it changed out for all the dirt it's collected, but what can you do?
Another hole prepared, another plant eased in. He carefully gathers the dirt around it, patting it flat. When he hears someone's approach he tenses just a little, but the fact that it's day eases his guard, if just a tiny bit.
"You don't by any chance have the plant people on speed dial, do you?" he asks, though he hasn't looked up to see who it is.
II. A Time to Lose
With still no word about the shuttles, Donnie wonders that no one's gone to check. Then again, given everything that's been needed to be repaired and cleaned up, he supposes people have just been too busy.
He's prepared to be disappointed about the continued absence of the shuttles.
He is completely unprepared for an absent hangar.
"Wha-??"
The area's blank, the building... but if it had collapsed completely then it would have surely left more of a mess, wouldn't it have? So he's running up the road to where it is, or was, or should have been, and the closer he gets, the stranger it is. By the time he comes to the end of the road, which at a glance seems to stretch further along, the turtle's frowning. "Not gone..." he murmurs, brow furrowed as he brings up a hand before abruptly jerking back wide-eyed, with a jolt. Or perhaps from a jolt.
III. A Time to Cast Away Stones
He hadn't really found a space he actually wanted to claim as his own, and with the volcano and aftermath still fresh in his mind, he's a little hesitant to look. But if he wants to do more things, having his own workshop and lab is- in his mind- a necessity.
It's even harder with so many places leveled or more damaged, harder still to tell what's sturdy and what's compromised. Donnie pokes around some of the buildings in the northeastern sector of the city, eyeing the outsides before ducking into a doorway to inspect the inside.
IV. A Time to Break Down
At some point he gets tired of looking at broken buildings and decides to stick to his roots, slipping underground and into the sewer system. It'd probably be a good idea to see if the tremors had caused any damages. Well, new damages. It doesn't look like much upkeep has been done with things here, so Donnie tries to be extra careful as he makes his way along the darkened tunnels.
He's opted to wear the hoverboots Tony had gifted him, just in case there's any trouble spots. But he's lived in the sewers of New York City so he highly doubts this one has anything it can throw at him that he can't handle.

Thankfully, the train is still there when they arrive. Sonic SOMEHOW manages to fight the urge to yell ALL ABOAAAARD as he hops onto the train. Maybe its because he doesn't want any vampires to notice him???
no subject
Getting to the train without incident is a relief, and Donnie feels all the better once they're settled in. He is very glad that Sonic has not decided to potentially give themselves away, or would have been if he were aware of the nearness of a situation.
Next stop, Sh'Ka..!
no subject
which is hopefully a fast trip because Sonic gets bored ten minutes in and has to burn off energy by pacing around like an annoying child TRAINS SUCK
no subject
Donnie is meanwhile starting to seriously contemplate making use of what he's got of his tranquilizer darts the more Sonic keeps moving around.
no subject
Its fine, its fine, maybe sonic can manage to spend most of this time napping?? Maybe???
no subject
Donnie tries distracting himself with things but he'd rather not risk any delicate work on a moving vehicle, and reading stuff on the tablet gets old rather quick given he's gotten most of the entries for flora and fauna memorized.
Napping might be the best way to go...
no subject
Okay, Sonic will attempt a nap! He's used to sleeping in weird places, he's totally got this!
no subject
Donnie probably ends up napping before Sonic gets around to it, all the sleep he's been missing out on taking the opportunity to catch up now that he's not looking over his shoulder at every given noise.
Eventually the train comes up out of the tunnel and Sh'Ka isn't long in coming into view thereafter. Ash rises up like steam from the tracks as the train pulls into the station.
no subject
Donnie napping does get Sonic to settle down, because he doesn't want to be rude and keep him awake, which leads to Sonic also managing a nap. He's not so heavy a sleeper to where he misses the train coming to a stop though, making sure Donnie is awake because it sure would suck to come all this way just to sleep through it and be stuck riding the train all the way back.
"Ugh, finally! We were sitting in one place for so long, it feels like my muscles are cramping!"
How does he even sleep??? We may never know.
no subject
Also for the record he totally did not drool all over the seat when he was asleep.
Sonic's complaints earn the hedgehog a look. "I don't know how you have managed to live all this time."
Stepping off the train, Donnie looks around. At a glance it doesn't look like there's any damage from the volcano eruption but he makes a face at the ash that puffs lightly in their wake. A gas mask would be great right now.
no subject
"I don't take the train." That's it, that's the secret to his survival.
And wow, what a mess. Sonic hops around in the ash a bit (like a child, naturally), but refrains from going too nuts.
"Man, I can't tell if there's any damage yet, but this place could do with a heavy duty vacuum cleaner."
no subject
"I'm not sure what the range was from the volcano, but whatever shielding was applied for Temba clearly hasn't done much for keeping the place clear of all this. Wonder if you could pull off the same thing you did with the dust in the arcade, except it'd be a whole lot more ground to cover, not to mention I have no idea where all the ash would go."
He shifts the bag on his shoulder as he starts forth. "-mind the plants there, they suck your blood," he notes before pausing to eye them.
no subject
So he will not do this, hahaaaa. As much as he wants to stretch his legs, Sonic follows Donnie rather than running off, aaand it's a good thing Donnie warned Sonic when he did because he was absolutely aboutto go look at some weird plants.
"Ew, really? What's with so many things around here trying to eat everyone?"
no subject
He's still all too happy to leave the train behind, even as they make way into the city. The ash is definitely a lot thicker on the streets here than in Temba, but some of the paths seem to have been cleared by someone at least. And Sonic is holding back from running off, which is an amazing and commendable feat.
no subject
Oh yeah, Sonic's going to be giving these plants a wide berth.
"So, have you been here a lot? I think I was only here like once before the volcano, but I never really learned my way around."
no subject
"Not a whole lot, no. A couple times but there wasn't a whole lot going on. Plus the whole being even emptier than Temba is kind of creepy."
He pulls out his tablet. "Basically it's the same layout as Temba, just in its mirror image. Not all the buildings match up of course, but in general, the idea's not all too different. Oh, and it's a little smaller."
no subject
Sonic is not in this mood.
"I wonder why the Agrii didn't try to send us here instead of stuffing us underground where we had to rely on the natives to keep us alive. The ash sucks, sure, but everything looks fine otherwise."
no subject
"I was wondering that too. Seemed like they just wanted everyone in one place for whatever reason. I still disagree that down was the best option."
He shrugs. "But then even the locals from this city took cover over there, or at least managed to make their way from here to there, so...maybe it was just a matter of them not being so sure just how bad the eruption would've been. The ash is pretty bad, and without the proper equipment it would have been unpleasant to weather. I'm not sure how well-supplied Sh'Ka is either."
no subject
Everyone survived and that's what's important? Clearly nobody was even the tiniest bit traumatized by the ordeal.
no subject
Donnie finds it helpful to focus on the informational side of things. Information, facts, those are easier to deal with. He does stick a little closer to Sonic as they wander, however.
"Given we don't know what else might happen, it wouldn't be a bad idea to make sure this place is properly equipped as a secondary habitat," he muses. "I know we hardly have enough people to think about splitting up to do things consistently in two cities but it might still be worthwhile to do something here."
no subject
"There could be some weird alien secrets here, too. Temba's got that cave that takes people to Calibrations, and now we know about the similar area under the mine. Think there could be something like that here?"
no subject
He brings up the map, holding the screen between them. "Should be...not far from the station, actually. May as well have a look I guess."
no subject
"Sounds good to me! Not a bad place to start, I think."
no subject
He looks up from the map and then points in the direction they need to head before starting along. Not that he's inclined to go too far from Sonic. He'd feel better holding his tech-bō but he wants to keep the tablet handy, at least just for the time being.
no subject
Sonic takes this nudge in stride and grins right back. "Our lungs'll thank us for it. Kinda wish we'd thought to bring those masks."
They hadn't kicked up too much dust, but that's probably mostly because Sonic is behaving and not tearing ass around town right now.
