A - Snow Planet

[Keith didn't get to experience snow much having grown up in the American Southwest, but here he was, cold, wet, and not really all that happy. The forced trip on to the ships with no idea what was happening had been harrowing enough. Were they all going to the same place? Were they being sent home? Quite a few questions had rattled around in his brain for the duration of the flight, and the calls from a harrowed Lance had been rough. The two of them were fairly codependent at this point, and being apart wasn't easy on either of them. Still, Keith found himself trying to stay calm for Lance's sake (though, he had the fleeting suspicion that Lance was doing the same and that neither of them was showing the other how they truly were faring), and it had left him pretty tired once they landed.

Being able to find Lance again had been nothing short of a relief at this point.

They'd picked a cabin, and found their sweater (Apparently, Lance won the 'team name' debate.), and were now exploring the little village on their own. Keith went around attempting to locate others he knew to make sure they'd made the trip. The only ones he knew for certain other than Lance were his shipmates...]

B - Robo-Claus

[After the startling wake-up call in the middle of the night with their "gifts" (Keith had been pretty ready to kill the intruder until he figured out what the heck was going on.), he could be found walking around with the Black Bayard hooked to his belt. Occasionally, when he was away from a crowd or in an open space, he could be found testing it out, making sure it was still working and he could properly form his sword.]

C - Never Take Candy from Strangers

[Guess who'd gotten into the candy. Guess who, because of said candy, was now a kid and couldn't remember anything beyond his first year at the Garrison. Guess who was a grumpy child with anger issues and had difficulty trusting people.

Keith was maybe 14 years old at this point, his hair a bit shorter, but still fluffy and unkempt looking, and he didn't have the large scar on his right cheek. He did have a massive chip on his shoulder, hating the universe for his lot in life, and being super resentful about everything. For a young teen, Keith was extremely bitter.

[Tommy frowns at that. It's a fair point, isn't it? ANd he doesn't like the idea of it.]

No. But how do I know you're not gonna use that power against me? You already used it to cheat at throwing snowballs.

[Keith was always looking for how he was going to get the short end of the stick. Life wasn't fair, after all.]

'Snot cheating!

[Tommy's lower lip juts out in a pout.]

And I'm a super hero! See, I've got a cape! Super heroes never cheat!

It is, too! I don't have super speed or anything like that, so using it against me is cheating!

[Keith scrunched his nose in annoyance.]

Anyone can put on a stupid cape. Super heroes don't exist.

You're taller than me. So reaching for anything taller than me is cheating. And doing any math I didn't learn at school is cheating. And if you can hold your breath longer than I can, that's cheating too!

[What he can just do physically TOTALLY isn't cheating. Keith's cheating by saying it's cheating.]

And you can't say that! My big brother is a hero. He's called Wiccan. And my Mommy, she's the Scarlet Witch. And my Aunt Lorna is Polaris. And my Daddy is the Vision. My whole family is heroes. Most of them are Avengers. Stop being mean!

[And yeah, the boy is nearing tears. Which is TERRIBLE in this sorta cold.]

[Keith clenched his fists again.]

I don't know who those people even are. What difference does it make? You know what happens to heroes? They get killed by helping others, so where does that leave them? Dead. And then they leave their kids behind! [Tears or not, Keith wasn't holding back.] My dad was a hero, too. A real big hero. Didn't listen to anyone and got himself killed. So, fine... go ahead and be a stupid hero.

[And, before he could start crying, too, Keith turned to stalk away. Crying only caused more problems...]

[No. No, his parents weren't gonna die. His family wasn't going to leave him. He rubs at the tears stinging at his eyes and then he moves. He's supposed to think before he acts. He's supposed to be good like all his family. But he's not supposed to let bullies win, right? That's not very hero-like. So he runs up to Keith, right behind him, and shoves him hard. At least he's good enough to not apply super strength.

And Keith probably deserves to eat snow.]

You're a horrible person!

[He almost did, but, without using the super strength, Keith only stumbled, barely staying on his feet. Keith didn't know it at this point, but he wasn't exactly fully human...

He did, however, managed to snag a handful of snow, crushing it into a tiny ball in his fist, and flung it as hard as he could back at Tommy as soon as he was able to turn around.]

And you're a dumb naive kid! Just go running back to Mommy and Daddy!

I'm smarter than you!

[For instance, he had been smart enough to know to move aside the second he noticed Keith get snow. It was SO fucking easy to dodge.]

You're a bad person. And a racist. And stupid. I'm... I'm going to tell someone and you're gonna be grounded and get no chocolate or candy because you're a bad boy!

[Keith clenched his jaw, his teeth showing just a bit. Had he suddenly developed fangs? It was hard to tell.]

Fine. Tell whoever. I don't care. I don't want any stupid candy anyway. Do what you want.

[Really... getting in trouble over something like this wasn't new to Keith. The world hated him anyway. He hated it right back.]

[And to think, Tommy at this age as he actually was, he'd understand Keith so well. Get him and agree with him and wouldn't bother hurting him. But the little boy as he is? He's hurting and looks about ready to flip.]

I would break your stupid face but my Mommy would get mad.

[So he just walks away. He doesn't need to care about this guy.

[That hit a really raw nerve, but Keith was running out of steam to be angry. Tommy might as well have just kicked him in the chest.

Mommy...

Part of him wanted so hard to scream, but he couldn't. It wouldn't come out. He dropped into the snow, not caring about the cold, not caring about the wet. He just... didn't care. He was alone. He'd always be alone. He hunched over with his face in his hands, just trying not to cry.

How many more times could his world just fall apart?]

[Wait, he didn't think the kid was gonna cry too. He hears Keith flop down in the snow and looks back at him. And he looks a bit lucky.]

You... could come with me. If you promise to be nice. You can share my family, if you promise to be nice because they're all super heroes. And... and I know I'm lucky because my family is here.

[It's stupid, but Tommy's a VERY nice boy.]

[Keith rubbed roughly at his face. No tears, but his eyes were glassy and red.]

They'll just send me away like everyone else. No one wants me.

[He sniffed.]

Why would they?

[Tommy thinks that's a stupid thing to say. He moves over to offer his hand.]

So long as you're not racist against mutants or jews, it'll be okay. Mom's super nice. And Auntie Lorna is SUPER cool. She can fly using metal. And Billy uses magic and he flies too. And he can make chocolate with magic. You can come have hot chocolate. And he gives the BEST hugs.

Cuz that's what everyone does. I get in trouble and they send me away. My teacher says I have discipline issues. [Really it was that Keith hadn't gotten the support he needed to grieve. His mom had never been in his life, and losing his dad left him with nothing. Sure, he had financial support from the fire department, but that didn't give him a place to live, or a family to help him grow up, or someone to help him deal with his loss. Group homes weren't great for kids who needed an outlet for strong emotions.

He clenched his fists around the bottom of his jacket.]

I don't see why anyone else would be different.

[He stared through his shaggy bangs at Tommy's hand, hesitant. One of his own loosened his grip a little. He wanted to take it...]

Take. My. Hand. Don't be stupid. Family is... it's what you find.

[He's young. And he's stupid. But he's also learned one thing. Mutants make families like they want them to be. Blood isn't always important.]

[Keith stared for a moment, still wary, still untrusting. He wanted it... he needed it... it was there. If he could just...

Keith took a deep breath and steeled his nerves. He took a chance with Shiro. He could do it again, right? He swallowed, a determined look on his face, and then reached out, standing up as he did.]

[Tommy's got a really strong grip for a boy his age, but he's happy anyway. He pulls Keith along almost immediately.]

We'll go see Billy. If adults are mean, then my big brother is right. He's like an adult but not quite yet. He's really nice. He made my cape. And there can be hot chocolate. He listens really good.

[Keith was a bit caught off guard, and he stumbled a bit, but he kept up all the same.]

H-how old is Billy?

[Keith wasn't sure about this, but he was kind of in it now.]

[Well, Tommy hasn't even tried to ask. He offers a brief shrug.]

He's big enough to pick me up and hold me. Isn't that enough?

[Big enough to be a big brother. He pulls Keith along at speed, happy to drag him where he needs to be. It will take a bit, and Tommy will chatter the whole way about how AWESOME his brother is, but at last he'll get them there, to one of the cabins. And he has to jump to get to the handle enough to open it, but then he smiles.]

Billy! I'm HooooOOOOme! Take my mittens off. The string makes it annoying!

Tommy?

[Billy peered out from where he was attempting to make some sort of meal for them that isn't just candy, looking a little surprised to find his brother had dragged along someone else, but he offered a belated smile, coming out to help Tommy with his mittens.]

That's the point of them. [He teased lightly, pausing then and looking to the other boy.] Who's your friend?

[Keith let himself get dragged along. He really had no choice in the matter at this point, and had no idea what he was getting into. When they burst through the door, Keith felt his hand finally released and he slowed to a stop just inside, hesitating going further.

Oh... That was Billy?]

Oh, hi. Uh... I'm Keith.

[Yeah, enjoy Tommy's nineteen-year-old twin brother. Tommy grins as Billy helps with the mittens. And once that's off he takes the rest of his warm weather fear off super fast and puts it on a chair before looking at Keith. See, now he knows the name.]

This is Billy. Billy, that's Keith. He bullied me and doesn't believe in super heroes and mutants and he may be racist but it's okay because he's my friend now. I'm sorry I tried to push you in the snow. Billy, can we have hot cocoa? Keith's gonna be our friend. He don't got nobody and we got ALL of the EVERYBODIES so he can stay.

[Orders from above? Maybe. Tommy might be VERY upset if they don't help Keith.]

Hey Keith.

[Billy tried to offer a welcoming sort of smile, seeing he didn't seem particularly comfortable. And then Tommy's talking a mile a minute, and Billy blinked, laughing a little at the sheer volume of information, though a few of the comments earned Keith a brief side eye. He nodded, conjuring up a few steaming mugs of cocoa with murmured words, and setting them on a low table for them.]

...Sounds like a plan. Careful, okay? It's hot. Blow on it. [That instruction was clearly more for Tommy than Keith. He trusted Keith not to burn himself.]
