All the World In Front of Me

I. Evaporate
One might have thought it impossible to kind of miss the Calibrations space but at least it was climate-controlled! The weather's been absolutely hideous, not to mention dry, something Donnie's not used to. It makes things difficult to concentrate on, even with a fan blowing in your face.

Even summers in New York were never this bad. He could almost be fooled into thinking he was stuck in stage one of the flu, except that it had never lasted for days. Then again, given how hard it is to tell the difference for the time of day with how consistent the temperature is holding, he's not sure how long it's been. Going outside seems out of the question, but he still risks it just so he can check on his poor plant experiments out in Blue-04.

This is definitely not an ideal climate for a soft-shelled turtle, but the boy can't not tend to his plants, even if what he can ultimately use is a soak in a nice big pool. He'd thought to lug some water out to the poor, wilting garden but now he's regretting not saving some for him to dunk his head in. He huddles in the meager shade of what's still standing of the ruins it resides in, trying not to cook as he tries to mentally plot the quickest course to finding cover.

II. Rest and Recharge
Thankfully the beach is more tolerable, and the water feels good to stand in. It's not the most ideal place to really relax for all the waves, but it's some respite from the heat at least. He might just go for a swim anyway.

Of course if any of those pesky lobsters get too close and prove to be a nuisance, they're going to see what it's like to be used as a giant croquet ball. They fly pretty far when they're whacked with a rocket-boosted mallet! Head's up!

Time at the beach is only partially for play, however. Donnie does have research to do, after all! He has some things to research and materials to gather in the caverns. And maybe at least it'll be cooler in the depths?

III. When Turtles Fly
Rocket-boots had never been something he'd ever considered making but now he wishes he had because. They. Are. Amazing!

Tony said these babies can break the sound barrier. Donnie is absolutely going to test this out.

As a self-proclaimed adrenaline enthusiast, there has been nothing stopping Donnie from testing their limits. Well, except for the heat, but if you go fast enough and high enough... Huh. What's the range on these anyway? Yet one more thing to find out.

It's both strange and exhilarating using tech that hasn't been built by him, that was made for him- maybe the most bizarre part of it. They're so much cooler than a skateboard- he doesn't need a ramp to do any tricks!

Heights have never been a problem for him and clearly neither have drops as he boosts himself up high and then lets himself freefall some before catching himself in midair and zipping along again. The heat may still be present but at least he doesn't have to walk in it!

Of course once he gets high up enough, he can catch a pretty good glimpse of that new rock formation to the southeast, and it does not look promising...

"Your world sounds complicated," Sonic says bluntly, but he seems genuinely interested. It's fine, his world is a giant mess too.

"Finding a hidden city must have been so cool, though!"

"Heh! Yeah, I guess it kind of is when you think about it." Donnie still wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

He grins then. "Oh, it was! It was completely by accident too. I mean, it was just a normal night of cannonballing off of a high rise into a rooftop pool and then next thing we know we're opening a portal to an entire city to try finding our human friend after she got stuck on the other side of things."

"That totally sounds like something I would do if I could swim."

There are few things in life cooler than jumping off of buildings for funsies. Donnie, you maniac.

"Isn't is weird how fast perfectly normal days can turn into off the wall adventures in different worlds? Did you guys end up finding your buddy? "

"Well, admittedly we cannonballed so hard we emptied the pool so there wasn't a whole lot of swimming going on there." Raph alone probably displaced half the water.

He has to laugh though. "Story of my life. At least it doesn't get boring? Just...mildly annoying when you actually have plans or something. Oh, but yeah, we did. Also found out where we were created. And conveniently it's also where I found the crystal I use in my goggles and where my brothers got their magic weapons."

"There are some days where I think I could probably roll with boring."

These days are few and far between, of course, but one can only save the world so many times before exhaustion catches up.

"So when you say created, what does that mean exactly?"

At first that sounds surprising, coming from a guy like Sonic, but after thinking about the instances he'd mentioned, Donnie supposes he can understand that. He'd hate to have to deal with the Shredder on a regular basis. Technically all they did was seal and lock away the crazy beast, but surely that can't come back to haunt them, right?

Donnie gives the rock he's been working on an experimental wiggle. Nooot quite.

"Oh. Um, well, I wasn't always this way. My brothers and I started out as normal turtles. Er, I'm not sure if normal animals means anything to you or if animals have always been humanoid and talk where you're from- anyway, not the case with us."

Honestly "boring" would drive him crazy. He just wants to not have to fight something for a while. Like right now! Except it's been a couple months and he hasn't had to fight anyone and maybe that feels weird? he can't decide.

"You're about as normal as a turtle gets where I'm from, bud. We do have little animals, though, sounds like you were more like that? So you were less created and more... modified? Does that sound right?"

It's been a bit weird not having any kind of trouble to punch at least on some occasion or another. Donnie kind of misses it, but not as much as he misses his family.

"Your world sounds like it'd be amazing to visit. Being the normal ones sounds kind of nice." He taps a bit more at the crystal.

"Technically modified would be more applicable I guess. The scientist that made us basically took human DNA and whatever was in that ooze he came up with to make us mutate from non-speaking, animal turtles into humanoid ones. He was apparently wanting to make an unstoppable army of mutants to lay waste to the human world or something."

"Well, bouncing around between planets isn't impossible. Maybe you can visit some time."

Said like it's the most normal thing ever. To Sonic isn't not too crazy an idea, anyway.

"Oh fun, mad scientist? Maybe it's not a good thing that I'm not super surprised by all that?"

Donnie looks hopeful at that. "I mean, it'd be pretty lame if we got dumped on a planet with actual access to spacefaring vehicles and still weren't able to go anywhere else, right?"

He sighs, nodding. "Warrior scientist or something, yeah. He's a yōkai, has these weird sheep feet. For a while he was real bent on us to join him so he could train us. Guess you gotta give him props for still being bent on the whole unstoppable army thing even after fifteen years."

"Hm. I mean, the ships are right there. Has anyone tried to borrow one in a more, ah... long term sort of way?"

SONIC SAYS: stealing is bad, kids. But long term borrowing maybe without permission totally isn't stealing.

"Anyway, that kinda reminds me of a couple dudes back home. Minus the warrior thing. Also one was a platypus, but I'm about ninety percent sure he's dead. He did some... pretty horrible experiments on a couple people, who in turn now wanna murder me. It's a long story."

"They won't go anywhere they're not allowed to. Which in this case includes space, which is utterly ridiculous. You can't even pilot the things without touching the corresponding data point, which I haven't because why bother if I can't go anywhere outside of atmosphere, right?"

Donnie gives one more hit, quickly letting his tools dissipate as the crystal breaks away and nearly falls.

"-yuck, people need to get new hobbies. There's a bunch of newly made mutants running around New York and somehow a majority of them have decided they don't like us so I kind of understand the whole murder problem. It's pretty annoying."

"Ugh. So essentially, they're just fancy airplanes. Do we ever actually get to use them? Because I was under the impression that we could only hop between a couple cities by train."

Which he hates because he could run faster than the stupid thing EXCEPT ALIEN MAGIC WON'T LET HIM.

"Super annoying. And kinda sad in this case? One of 'em, her name's Surge. She was brainwashed into the whole thing, she knows she was brainwashed, but in spite of that and the fact that the scientist that messed her up is dead, she still feels like she's trapped by him and has it in her head that she always will be until I'm gone. She got real close, too. It's a whole mess."

"...yeah, basically. Lame. But yeah, I've heard from people that have been here longer that they've actually gone off-world so...I guess it's just a matter of time?"

Donnie winces at Sonic's own explanation of at least one problem. "Ugh, that sounds like a real pain." How do you fix something like that? Short of killing or being killed, anyway. He's a bit uncomfortable with not being able to come up with a solution right off the back so he just quietly sets it in the 'thankfully not his problem' box.

"I hope we get to take the ships out soon. I'm getting real bored with being stuck with two cities."

He's been bored for like a month and a half, but he won't start whining about that right now.

"Yeah. Ah well, guess I'll figure it out when I get home."

Sonic is also uncomfortable with not being able to come up with a solution, and it is his problem, but there's not much that can be done for it as long as he's stuck here.

Donnie picked up on the whole boredom thing the first time they'd met so he's not all too surprised that Sonic's already bored with both cities. But he's in full agreement when it comes to wanting to take a trip on a spaceship. It's really no fun being dumped on an abandoned planet.

"Yeah. Anyway, if you've been managing to avoid getting yourself killed back home after everything else, you must be doing something right, right?"

IT SUCKS, DONNIE, Sonic's seen everything there is to see between Temba and ...the other one. He doesn't remember the name, that's how boring it is!

"Normally I'd say it's all thanks to my mad skillz," with a z, naturally, "but this last time I literally just got lucky. I've probably been having too many close calls lately..."

The last sentence was mostly mumbled to himself, maybe he's actually stopping to self reflect for once. Also he's started juggling the crystals Donnie handed him to hold. It's probably fine.

"Not sure how much I lean on luck but I'd say we must have had a stockpile that last fight my family managed to get through," Donnie admits, grimacing. Their fight against a wild, unstable Shredder that could have ended them at any given time with those awful claws of his had been chock-full of close calls.

He looks over the crystal he'd just dug out, tucking it into his bag. He doesn't seem terribly concerned about Sonic's juggling act though, or at least they haven't proven so delicate that they couldn't take a bit of mishandling. Hopefully.

"Think I got enough. We can head back out now."

"Sounds like your life's just as exciting as mine, bud. Aside from science warriors and other mutants, what do you guys usually deal with?"

Ah, are we putting the crystals away now? Sonic stops slinging the ones he's holding around and holds them out to Donnie so he can stuff them in the bag.

"Super, I can't waaaait to go back out in the heat," he whines, but they can't exactly stay in here forever.

"Oh, well there's these guys who are part of this Foot Clan, who are apparently ancient enemies of my father's clan- more stuff we only learned pretty recently. Didn't think they were that much of a deal until they tried resurrecting some ancient evil guy in armor who was pretty much unstoppable." Donnie shudders. "We managed to get him locked away so hopefully we don't have to worry about that mess anymore." Haaaah.

He tucks the other crystals away, sighing. "Yeah, same here, but if we stay in here too long we'll be super-wired from soaking up all the energy and I really don't know how healthy that is in the long-run."

"I know you just said a buncha stuff that sounds like a huge pain in the butt, but are these guys seriously called the Foot Clan? Are they super good at kicking stuff? And also necromancy apparently?"

Leave it to Sonic to zero in on the stupid part. And the zombie part.

"Not that I'm too much of a sciency guy or anything, but I really am curious about the way the energy in this cave works. Maybe some day you smart guys'll figure out a safe way to study it."

Anywho, time to go. Sonic starts heading out, but not like crazy fast since he and Donnie are chatting and running off would be RUDE.

"Yeah- seriously. They have these footprints on their faces and everything so you know they're super committed." Donnie shrugs. "Most of them are pretty lame, it's like they find their members on the internet or something. The main guys are serious, they have like...flames on their heads? And they do origami and make paper ninja that come alive."

Donnie follows after, trying to think of a good way to put his mystic power charge to use while he's got it. "It is pretty fascinating stuff. It's too bad there's absolutely nothing in the library left from whoever actually lived here to just look things up but I guess that would make things too convenient for us."

"Paper ninjas, huh? Sounds like a good flamethrower could solve at least half of your problems."

There's probably more to it than that, but as cool as magic origami ninjas sounds, they don't exactly sound threatening.

"So you're sayin' someone took everything useful out of the library before we got here? Cool, love that we've basically been set up for failure."

"Oh yeah, I have that built into my tech-bō. And a custom shredding blade, just for any origami ninja occasions. But no, they're not particularly threatening. Just...annoying when there's a whole bunch of them, but my brothers and I have much improved in our ability to fight them."

He gives an exaggerated shrug then. "Took or destroyed. I don't know what the standard format for anything is around here although I suspect things like those data points might have been one of the main ones. It doesn't really make much sense though. The Agrii wouldn't have destroyed their own history, especially if they were forced to leave this place. So someone must have come and for whatever reason tried wiping out whatever traces of Agrii culture there might have been."

"Sounds like you got 'em handled, at least."

Your world is super weird, Donnie. Not that Sonic would be one to talk.

"Tommy mentioned something about another group of aliens, the Atroma, or something? I don't know the first thing about them, but Tommy thinks they're responsible for the Calibrations thing. Maybe they could have something to do with the missing books and junk?"
