All the World In Front of Me
WHO: Donnie and you!
WHERE: Temba
WHAT: Trying not to roast
WHEN: Mid to late July
WARNINGS: N/A
NOTES: Will match tag format/preference!
I. Evaporate
One might have thought it impossible to kind of miss the Calibrations space but at least it was climate-controlled! The weather's been absolutely hideous, not to mention dry, something Donnie's not used to. It makes things difficult to concentrate on, even with a fan blowing in your face.
Even summers in New York were never this bad. He could almost be fooled into thinking he was stuck in stage one of the flu, except that it had never lasted for days. Then again, given how hard it is to tell the difference for the time of day with how consistent the temperature is holding, he's not sure how long it's been. Going outside seems out of the question, but he still risks it just so he can check on his poor plant experiments out in Blue-04.
This is definitely not an ideal climate for a soft-shelled turtle, but the boy can't not tend to his plants, even if what he can ultimately use is a soak in a nice big pool. He'd thought to lug some water out to the poor, wilting garden but now he's regretting not saving some for him to dunk his head in. He huddles in the meager shade of what's still standing of the ruins it resides in, trying not to cook as he tries to mentally plot the quickest course to finding cover.
II. Rest and Recharge
Thankfully the beach is more tolerable, and the water feels good to stand in. It's not the most ideal place to really relax for all the waves, but it's some respite from the heat at least. He might just go for a swim anyway.
Of course if any of those pesky lobsters get too close and prove to be a nuisance, they're going to see what it's like to be used as a giant croquet ball. They fly pretty far when they're whacked with a rocket-boosted mallet! Head's up!
Time at the beach is only partially for play, however. Donnie does have research to do, after all! He has some things to research and materials to gather in the caverns. And maybe at least it'll be cooler in the depths?
III. When Turtles Fly
Rocket-boots had never been something he'd ever considered making but now he wishes he had because. They. Are. Amazing!
Tony said these babies can break the sound barrier. Donnie is absolutely going to test this out.
As a self-proclaimed adrenaline enthusiast, there has been nothing stopping Donnie from testing their limits. Well, except for the heat, but if you go fast enough and high enough... Huh. What's the range on these anyway? Yet one more thing to find out.
It's both strange and exhilarating using tech that hasn't been built by him, that was made for him- maybe the most bizarre part of it. They're so much cooler than a skateboard- he doesn't need a ramp to do any tricks!
Heights have never been a problem for him and clearly neither have drops as he boosts himself up high and then lets himself freefall some before catching himself in midair and zipping along again. The heat may still be present but at least he doesn't have to walk in it!
Of course once he gets high up enough, he can catch a pretty good glimpse of that new rock formation to the southeast, and it does not look promising...

Not that he want's to leave the comfort of the air conditioned arcade. He'll make questionable choices later.
no subject
These are fascinating things to think about for sure, but Donnie's not so inclined to want to go back outside either. It's nice in here. He can finally relax for a bit.
no subject
He stops sliding around the ice like a weirdo and hops back up on his pinball machine. Maybe it is nap time, he's slept in weirder places.
no subject
Donnie watches as Sonic gets back up on the pinball machine, snickering a little. The hedgehog has the right idea though. Naptime sounds great, but Donnie's not sure the mystic-tech will stay active if he falls asleep. Well, he'll catch-up on sleep eventually, one way or the other.
no subject
He's not gonna try to nap just yet, Donnie tasked him with closing the windows if he falls asleep. let's see who succumbs to sleep first, nerd.
no subject
...although at this rate it's definitely going to be Donnie.
"Euggghk, that's a mental image I didn't need. Seeing my dad with his fur all shaved off was horrifying enough."
Without his phone to fiddle with, he has nothing but his tablet to look at and there's not much by way of fun things there. Network postings are kind of dull. Maybe when he's not shriveling up from the heat he can try making some fun content..!
So all that's really left is reading entries in the Dick Shun Airy. Thrilling, right? With such scintillating material it's no wonder that he starts nodding off where he sits.

Sonic can't help but laugh at Donnie's suffering, sorry bro. Said laughter leads into a yawn. He's fading fast, guys, oh noo.
"Dare I ask how your dad ended up like that?"
no subject
Donnie shudders. "Well, first off, he's a big mutant rat. He used to be human- the guy that made us what we are used his DNA to do it. The rat thing was accidental though, I think. But anyway, he had the flu and stage one got him overheated so he figured the best thing to do was shave his fur off. ...unfortunately he's also taken to doing so in order to go incognito amongst the humans by passing himself off as a teenager." Yeah, go figure that one out.
no subject
"I'm sorry, what!? Does he seriously pull a 'hello fellow human kids' by shaving his entire body!? Does it work!?"
Oh my God Sonic is delighted by this. Donnie your family is amazing???
no subject
Doesn't much raise his opinions of most humans but on the other hand it makes it easier to mingle with the general populace. When they're not cosplaying as alien turtlemen from Jupiter Jim movies, then it's surprising how they can get around with only a hoodie.
no subject
"That is amazing, and hilarious, and I love it. I wanna meet your dad, he sounds kind of incredible."
no subject
Well, technically. They did learn a lot from watching his movies!
no subject
Clearly the man is a professional. At many things, by the sounds of it.
"I bet it was cool to have someone around to teach you stuff, even if he does shave himself to blend in with the cool kids."
no subject
"Yeah, dad's pretty cool. True, he spends most of the time watching TV these days but he can still hold his own in a fight." It's clear Donnie still adores his father. He sighs wistfully, resting his head over his folded arm. "...man I miss him. And my brothers. And home..."
no subject
"Oh yeah, I feel that. We'll figure this mess out and get you home as soon as we can, bud."
But now it's nap time. Sonic flops onto his back and folds his hands behind his head, really hoping that it won't take too long to actually make good on that promise. Only time will tell, right?
no subject
It's a nice thought, at least. Donnie's eyes are already closed but he'd at least heard Sonic, a faint smile on his face, disrupted only by another yawn. Definitely nap-time.
...which unfortunately means the air conditioning won't be long in shutting down but at least the cold will hang around for a while.
no subject
Sonic will at least manage to keep himself awake long enough to close the windows after the AC dies, but after that he's gonna crash.
