There were, apparently, downsides to living in the hospital. For instance, sometimes a giant, angry, bear-badger amalgamation decides that your home slash workplace is something like their den. Or whatever monsters thought.

Tae? She was not enjoying being in a building that was getting recurring giant wanderings. Especially when she has no clue how long that generator she had found in her explorations was rated to last.

"Damn thing just wants to give me a bad day," she grumbled as she worked her way through several storage closets to try and stuff a pack with emergency medical supplies. "Guess I need to make more to go emergency medical kits."

Another thing in a list of many things that need done, and she's so tired to think of that.

"Where in the world am I going to set up first aid? What a mess. This is so outside of my pay grade."

It's charming and kind of him, putting himself between her and the Kaiju. Because she's definitely categorizing it as that in her head. Too many movies back home. It's charming and kind and probably useless because what could either of them do if it wanted to attack them?

"I'll be honest, I haven't explored much. Been too much work to do. But away seems like the best answer."

Radley doubts he could do much, except maybe strike it a couple of times with the machete and at least distract it so Tae could hopefully get farther away. It's his protective nature kicking in. That, and the desire to actually do something and not be useless like he feels he ultimately was back home.

"Yeah, no kidding. Well, let's just hope for the best, then...."

He continues to lead her away, hopefully staying out of the thing's line of vision....

"Because that's ever how life goes," she said, her voice edged with frustration. She knows better than to assume things would go well.

"Maybe we should be hiding behind stuff when we can?"

Radley gave a dry smirk. "It often isn't, but I'm not gonna picture that this will just end badly. I don't plan to die today. I already did that back home. 100% do not recommend."

But he nodded at the suggestion. "Anything we can get behind without making noise getting there, yeah." There was certainly plenty to hide behind.

"Most people don't plan to die on any given day," she points out, unable to keep the dark humor away. It was too much in her nature. And thus was a moment someone needed to make a joke.

"How about that," she said, gesturing toward a tumbled wall. Who knew if it was tall enough to hide them from something large though.

"Unless you're Kalin Kessler," Radley muttered.

He looked to the wall. "Sure, we can give it a try." He started in that direction.

Yes, that's not a name she knows, so perhaps she isn't.

"Alright then," she said, moving to follow him as quick as she can, and trying not to hiss in pain when she stepped on a sharp rock.

Radley looked back to her, seeing her expression. "Are you okay?"

She could go off on a long discussion about the different damages she was doing to herself, along with long medical terms. Instead she winced and kept going as quickly as she could.

"Considering investing two replicator passes on tennis shoes and socks."

[crystalmaster]

"I recommend it," Radley said. "You never know what's going to happen around here so you'll need to run."

Finally the wall was ahead.

Function over form. How horrid. But it was better than cutting up her feet all the time.

They neared the wall and Tae ducked behind it, just as the nearby monster (still engaged in its fight, brought a foot down hard. The shockwave tripped her up, causing Tae to fall fully forward. At least she kept her hands over her head.

"Does it do that a lot?"

Radley tried to plant his feet and reach to catch her, but he started falling too and had to grab the wall. "More than I'd like," he sighed.

At last she wasn't the only one to fall.

"Wonderful. This city isn't exactly stable."

People could be injured in building collapses. They could.

[crystalmaster]

"It's sure not. If we're lucky, maybe we'll stop the monsters soon," Radley said.

Maybe. Something tells Tae they won't be lucky. That isn't how her life works.

"We get lucky here a lot?"

[crystalmaster]

"Heh. Who knows," Radley smirks dryly. "You wanna start going again?"

He looks around for the monster. It's still distracted.

No. She really doesn't. But what she wants doesn't matter as much as getting safe.

"If you're ready to go."

[crystalmaster]

"Yeah." He's pretty nervous to get to safety fast. "This looks like a good time to get farther away from it."

[butterfly_kiss]

Yeah, it is. Tae takes a deep breath, nods, and straightens.

"Let's hope it can't do that often. I would hate to fall in the middle of the road."

[crystalmaster]

"Me too," Radley winces.

He starts off walking again but is reluctant to get too far ahead of Tae.

"You don't have to linger for my sake," she says, even though she appreciates it. The medical supplies were important, though she supposed a physician who could help with really bad injuries was useful too.

[crystalmaster]

"I'm on a rescue mission, so I'd kinda like to see it's done right," Radley says. "Letting you fall behind wouldn't be very sporting." Or kind.

"I'm a mission now? Congratulations, you're doing pretty good so far," she said. If she wasn't stressed she would chuckle. Sorry about that.

"I thought sports were about letting people fall behind."

[crystalmaster]

"You'd probably better hold the congratulations until we see if I can lead you out of this," Radley says.

He smiles. "Some sports are about teamwork."

"Better to congratulate you now, so that you receive some for the effort if we fail because of me."

Teamwork. Tae chuckles. She's a doctor. Teamwork was something she understood, but only sometimes.

"Let's go then. As fast as we can."
