[Event] The Day The Network Stood Still

The Day The Network Stood Still

The datapoints are a great equalizer, bringing all who come to them the same level of knowledge with the systems they are associated with. Or that's how they're theoretically supposed to work. Truth of the matter is that coming in with some level of competence and understanding can go quite far, and being completely oblivious can have its own repercussions.

Especially when one learns something is theoretically possible and wishes to understand the how of it. Usually such explorations of an apprentice in a skill tended to be better guided by a master to avoid disasters. Well, perhaps disaster is too big of a word to cover what happens from the exploration of the communications systems by Dedicate Initiate Lark.

All it take is looking into a hidden directory here, accidentally deleting some data there, a frantic bit of trying to fix the system from memory, and a true lack of knowledge of Ctrl+Z as a lifesaver. And just like that the communication system's user database was horribly tangled, posting was down, and poor Lark was none the wiser of the chaos she had inflicted.

And so it happened that there came a Day The Network Stood Still.

Well not fully still, but it's sure being difficult. The posting process for public messages is glitching out, video and audio and even text posts bouncing back with a 'System Error: Please Try Again Later' message. Over, and over, and over for hours. Good news? The direct message function still works properly right? Right?

Wrong. Any message sent directly to another He Row will find itself caught up in the error and delivered. But never to the right person. The good news is that once a conversation chain starts, at least the system is sending back and forth reliably. People will just have to live with their mis-sent texts getting out there to other people. Who knows, maybe it will be good for some laughs.

FAQ

When does this event take place?

This event covers one day and one day only. It starts at 5 AM Temba Standard Time, Tuesday April 12th and continues for 24 hours. We are posting it early, but it technically only takes place in that 24 hour window. Joining in late is allowed, don't think you missed the event just because you missed the specific in game day.

Can my character make a public post during this event?

No matter who your character is, what their powers are, or even what datapoint they took, there will be no ability to make public posts in any form on this day. It will also not be possible to send a direct message that actually reaches its intended target. Any message sent will get to a another He Row it was not meant for.

So what do we do?

If you want your character to receive a misfired message, post a new reply to this with the character's name as the Subject Line. If you have any rules about the sort of thing you'd prefer to avoid, please leave it in the body of the comment. Then wait for the messages to come in. We ask that you Do Not post your own initial comments there. This isn't Texts From Last Night. Think of it more as your character is reaching out to someone they're prone to messaging, and it just doesn't end up where they want it to go.

My character doesn't send a lot of private messages. How would I get them involved in this?

Part of the whole build up of this structure is that it's good for bringing in characters who might not send out messages themselves. Maybe they aren't sending many messages out, but if you want them involved, you can post a comment for them, and messages may come to them anyway. Who knows, maybe they can make a new friend/pen pal of sorts! Or just get caught up on the juiciest gossip they didn't want to know about.

I'm still not sure I understand the format of this. Any examples?

You're in luck. We actually did this about a year ago as a meme. So we have a functional example over here. Only difference here is that this time it's game canon.

Wait, so I can use this for AC?

Yes you can. But there are some important notes here. Your top comment serving as your character's 'inbox' for this? That won't count for AC. And the section of comments you give us for AC should have an average of three sentences per comment. This is part of our AC rules. If you don't have that, at least give us a longer chain so we can use that for consideration instead.

What about content warnings/other possibly triggering stuff?

Please do not send unsolicited triggering stuff, and remember not to send adult content texts to the few 'children' in the game. No racy pictures to Omega or Peter. When in doubt, remember you can message other people AND all players maintain a permissions post. Check those first before getting racy/potentially emotionally intense. You wouldn't trauma dump on someone you've never met before, would you?

Can we see who the misfired text is from?

No, that's sadly not possible. Even those with the Communications Datapoint, or insane hacking skills won't be able to decode the mess Lark has unwittingly made here. He Rows will have to use context clues, shared photos (if any are sent), or flat out being told who it is to know who they are talking to.

Can senders see that messages didn't get to their intended recipient?

Also a no here. The messages will label the person they are speaking to as if they were the intended recipient. As an example, if you meant to send a message to Lark and it went to Tommy, the message will insist that it's Lark who got it, and all responses would be labeled with Lark's name, even if it's Tommy.

Can I just play this out in my inbox?

Because of the nature of this event, we ask that all participation in it happen in this post. This allows everyone to engage equally. If you're looking to limit your interactions with it, then either focus on tagging out to other people, or when you put up your character's comment for this, indicate you would like no more than a certain number of people to respond.

Does my character have to keep interacting after they figure out it's the wrong person?

Absolutely not. Characters are still themselves. They can choose not to engage at any point. It is polite, though, to let the person know that your character is no longer responding. This lets people know that the thread is closed and not to expect more.

I don't know who to send something to. Help?

Well, use this Random number generator with the number of comments already posted, and use that to figure it out.

yeah let me work on that
get torn apart again

no
absolutely not
it doesn't get any of us anywhere
not where i'm from

maybe the universe needs to be destroyed
take all of us with it

just

fuck it

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen the universe nearly destroyed. Please do not wish that upon people. Many innocents, human and Kree and androids and of countless races you have never seen will suffer.
buildingitsir: (frustrated; omg stop)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
whatever

i don't expect someone like you to fucking understand anyways
kree_soldieress: Lauri-Ell from Captain Marvel (Default)

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I understand better than most. It sounds as if humanity has done to you as the Kree did to the Cotai. And the Skrull. We launched a million years of war. It grieves me, the sins of my people. We could not stop warring, and so many sparks of life and wonder were cut short.

It is our greatest sin.
buildingitsir: (spicy boi; angey)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-12 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
you know what
fuck you
you sound so high and mighty right now
just because i told you what they were doing
doesn't mean you understand
we just want to be fucking seen as people
not murdered for deviating off of our programming
sent to a scrapyard
not held down to be torn apart because
we're just 'pieces of plastic'
i'm not going to sit idly by
and let humans rip us apart anymore

we are not lesser beings
we are not playthings for humans
to just chuck to the side
to have our insides ripped out
and left to fucking die

and if we have to incinerate the humans to get that point across

so fucking be it

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-12 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not wish to sound high and mighty. I wished to try and offer some of the experience my people gained through great pain and strife.

I am very sorry for overstepping my bounds. It was not my intention. I apologize.
buildingitsir: (scolded; quiet; somber)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-13 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
[It takes a few minutes for a reply to come through. York has to calm himself down so he doesn't textually yell at Lauri-Ell. Again.]

i shouldn't have yelled
sorry
thank you
for sharing experiences
maybe if i go home
and everything hasn't gone to hell
i can use them
kree_soldieress: Lauri-Ell from Captain Marvel (Well This Is Awkward)

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you can. What you have described is a horror, and your people deserve freedom from it. From fear and from suffering. A chance to forge your own lives.
buildingitsir: (frustrated; omg stop)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
lauri-ell
they took everything
before i came here
they
they sent a raid into our home
they were killing so many androids
and then
they fucking blew it up

i don't even know what happened after that
humans are shitty beings
kree_soldieress: Lauri-Ell from Captain Marvel (Default)

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-13 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, they can be. But I do not believe I have run into any species who lacked such people.
buildingitsir: (scolded; irritated)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-13 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
true
cal told me that humans are pretty awful to their own
i believe that
i can only imagine how bad they are to each other
at least there's laws with humans hurting humans

is it bad where you're from?
kree_soldieress: Lauri-Ell from Captain Marvel (Default)

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-13 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
It was, very bad, for a very long time. It was only in the last few months before coming here that peace was finally made between my people and one of those we wronged. And unfortunately our reuniting was forged in part because of the other species we wronged.

The Kree and Skrull both have so many things to make up for.
buildingitsir: (scolded; quiet; somber)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-13 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
peace is good
i guess maybe
sometimes trying helps?
idk
i've never been in a situation like that

[And York is making an effort not to make the same mistake she accidentally did a few minutes ago.

This was the part where he should offer...sympathy? Right? ]

i'm sorry it was hella bad for a really long time
kree_soldieress: Lauri-Ell from Captain Marvel (Default)

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-13 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
It is the only situation I have known but for this one.

In a way I am lucky. I have not really been a part of that war.
buildingitsir: (slight pout)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-13 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
sounds like me and my home
the only situation i've known
violence on more violence
i put myself into the revolution tho

what did you do back in your world?
i guess like a career or a hobby or something
idk if you have a fancy name or anything for it
kree_soldieress: Lauri-Ell from Captain Marvel (Default)

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-13 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I was a soldier. Until I wasn't. And then I became the head of justice for my people, at the will of the emperor. For he said no one but one who understood the weight of being falsely accused could care so much for those they must seek and judge.

I was an Accuser.
buildingitsir: (small smirk; glance up)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-13 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
an accuser? sounds like a
interesting
name for a judge
did i understand that right?

also i strangely like how you put that?
'i was a soldier until i wasn't'.
i was an architect until i wasn't.

kinda
poetic

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-13 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Our history was very different. But the title carries weight still. I am also the bodyguard of the Royals at this juncture.

It is a sensible way of explaining myself. I was made to be a soldier. I remained such until I became something else.
buildingitsir: (look up; amused)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-13 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
fancy
never met an actual bodyguard before
sensible and logical
efficient even
gets the point across without getting too convoluted
heh
there's so many things i can substitute in for what i was and what i became
kree_soldieress: Lauri-Ell from Captain Marvel (Default)

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-13 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not think my kind are that rare. Well, bodyguards at least.

It is practical, and that I appreciate.
buildingitsir: (pointing; talking; stop being stupid)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-13 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
the closest we have are police
and the military
bodyguards i think might be for like
presidents and stuff
but you said you worked for an emperor right?
so that would make sense
which is something you like i think
kree_soldieress: Lauri-Ell from Captain Marvel (Default)

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-14 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I serve at the will of the Emperor, yes. And I am honored by the faith he places in me. He is the son of the greatest hero of our people.

Beyond my mother.

[Wrong, Lauri. Mar-Vell was WAY more important than Mari-Ell. Except for the fact that Lauri-Ell loved the mother she had never known, and hoped her mother would have loved her.]
buildingitsir: (you have my attention)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-14 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
what's your mom like?

[York hadn't asked anyone yet of their parental relationship but now...well, curiosity was a thing. His programming was constantly learning after all. So why not learn how other people's families function? Probably better than his at least.]

[personal profile] kree_soldieress 2022-04-14 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
She liked donuts.
buildingitsir: (uh what; excuse me)

[personal profile] buildingitsir 2022-04-14 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
donuts?
color me surprised
thought donuts were an earth only thing
though i suppose if you come to earth
you probably tried some
maybe brought them back to her?
