Not magic, but I guess if you're unused to technology and machines then I can see how it can seem that way. It's wires and things inside that make it generate heat. The power source would need recharging if you use it for a long time, but if you're staying in a place it can be plugged in, then you won't need to worry about that too much.
Re: [Text]
this is hard to type on sometimes. ia m sory about mistakes.

I'll bring a heater over, then. It's not far.

[The word 'lobby' wasn't in his vocabulary just yet]

He shivered and finally took the last few steps down into the lobby with his scrawny arms around his upper body for warmth.

It takes him a little bit to get to the city square and the hotel itself, the snow making the walk from his workshop just a little more tedious, but not impossible. He stomps his boots free of snow before stepping into the lobby and pushing back the hood of his poncho, a young man, probably in his late teens. In his other hand he carries a rectangular device. Over his shoulder peeks BD-1, his droid.]
no subject
Slowly he worked his way over, watching in case the man made a sudden move. It was like watching a deer make its way over to him - though this one was way too scrawny. No wonder he was cold.]
you are the one with the heat?
no subject
Yes, that's me. I'm Cal Kestis. This is BeeDee-One.
[He smiles a little as he indicates the droid with a nod, BD-1 beeping a perky greeting at Lerith. Cal then holds up the box he carries by a handle, about a foot in length and a several inches beyond that in height with a grill set in the front and a couple of dials and buttons on the top.]
Here's the portable heater. I'll show you how to work it- it's not too difficult.
no subject
He pulled the device back into his hands.]
i am lerith
[He looked at the heater before crouching down to get a better look. Too-thin fingers play with the dials and the buttons for a moment before looking at Cal.]
never seen something like this before. common where you are from?
no subject
It's nice to meet you, Lerith.
Yeah, we have similar things like this. Here.
[He sets the heater down, then begins to point things out.]
This switch turns it on. This dial adjusts the temperature. Don't place anything directly in front of this grill and don't touch it when it's been running or you might burn yourself.
This here can set a timer for it to turn off if you want, up to four hours.
no subject
almost like there is fire magic inside of it. but controled with the dial on top? interesting.
[He makes certain it's not plugged in before turning the dial a little here and there, and then pressing the button for the timer. Nothing happens obviously, but the motions are so odd to him.]
my room is small, probably won't need to be on for even four hours. especially with all the blankets people have donated to me. what kind of magic is beadyone?
no subject
If the room is small then you're probably right. So long as everything is closed, it should keep the heat in for a time. The plug's in here if you need it.
[He turns the unit around and opens the storage panel in demonstration, pulling out the end of the cord.]
If you have an outlet in the wall, you can plug it into there so this will have power to turn on. Like...
[As he looks around, BD-1 beeps and hops off his shoulder, skittering over towards an adjacent wall. He tweedles and beams a light at the wall outlet he's found. Cal grins.]
Yes- just like that. Thanks, Bee-Dee.
[He has to chuckle at the question as he tries to work out how to explain.]
Not exactly magic. He's...mechanical. But I guess if someone wasn't familiar with droids, I can see how they'd think he's magic. He's got quite a personality.
no subject
He notes the cord presented and nods, then looks back at the robot]
is his name 'beedy' or 'bd'? i want to spell it right.
[Carefully the mute goes over to squat down and get a better look at the droid, holding his hand out like he would an animal.]
no subject
[The droid tilts his boxlike head at the elf and then looks at the hand before shifting his weight to one leg so he can tap at the hand with his other foot. Is this that variation of a fistbump that some people like to do here?]
no subject
[BD-1!]
[He signs it easily to the droid, almost like he's trying to show the robot how his name works in sign language. Lerith leans in a little closer, trying to inspect BD-1 without actually touching them. It? Them.]
no subject
Cal laughs as he watches them.]
no subject
As BD-1 turns to watch the elf inspect him, the mute gives a silent laugh himself.]
[I look! Stay still!]
[The signing is easier, even if the recipient can't understand it. Another silent laugh and instead offers his hands because he wants to pick up the robot. Droid? Sentient metal creature.]
no subject
With a little hoot BD-1 obligingly hops up, expecting to be caught, but if he's not he'll just stand on tiptoe until he's picked up. He'll tuck his feet in like a bird, not terribly heavy despite his metal make.]
no subject
Okay, so only a little like a bird.
He grins over at Cal with his yellow eyes bright. It was like he had nothing to be afraid of with this metal animal being like a friend! Lifting him up, BD-1 is offered the top of Lerith's head, poofy white hair resembling a nest only a little bit. A nest for a bird droid robot creature thing!]
no subject
BD-1 beeps as he's lifted, peering at the elf's head before reaching out one of his little feets to pat at the tuft of hair. Ooh, heads are harder to stand on, not that he's stood on many heads, but he is very careful as he's eased there. After all, he doesn't think Lerith would like him grabbing onto his hair if he suddenly felt he was going to fall!
It's a balancing act even Cal watches with a bit of anxiousness before BD-1 gives something like a triumphant twitter once he finds his balance.]
