[ Kaz has been around for a while, but despite Jon teaching him the basics, Kaz took the time to learn about a smartphone and the trick of scrolling with gloves on. Now he can use one with ease, as though they weren't totally unknown in his world. He has also taken the time to learn about Temba, about the ships, and a tiny bit about what the Agrii want with the lot of them. But despite learning a little about electrical conduction, the lack of the laws of physics has made that learning difficult.

He's set up shop on board the Bloodsport (a place that would only unlock for a small number of people was much better than one that was open to all) and is sitting on board the ship now. He's not happy about asking, but he's hit a wall with learning more on his own. ]

I suppose it's a common enough question, but I can't find out more about the currently blinking light. I admit that I am new to understanding how electricity functions so I have to ask outright; despite the automated pattern, would electrical current be capable of reaching so far?

[ When he speaks, his voice sounds like he gargles with whiskey and broken glass every morning. Like he's an old man, despite actually being a 17-year-old boy. ]

Yeah, totally.

I mean, it's entirely possible this light doesn't mean anything and is just some abandoned crap that's chosen now to kick up - emergency power cells dying or something, like when a smoke detector kicks it - but considering that everyone who has been here a while seems to think it's important, it's probably worth checking out.

[ Kyle reminds Kaz of Wylan. And not just because of the red hair, though being a ginger helps. It's that almost puppyish attitude, as though Kyle wants to prove something and thereby be accepted. It would be enough to paint a target on his back in the Barrel.

At the moment he ignores the compliment, though it's especially funny since Kaz seemed to get flack from his friends about his hair. ]

I take it you have easily accessible electricity where you came from or were you just smart enough to work that out?

[Oh, yes, he's definitely a puppy of a man. And here, in a foreign place surrounded by strangers, his first instinct is to band together with people so he can help. It really doesn't occur to him that anybody in this broken down world might have anything but good intentions.]

Yeah, very easily accessible. But I understand the basic principles well enough. Heh, I really paid attention in school when we got to make a battery out of a potato.

[ Kaz actually had that lesson, though it was the demonstration of creating a spark from nothing. But he's pretending not to.

He raises an eyebrow with a slight smirk. ]

A potato? Really?

[kyley_b]

Yeah! I mean you need two metals, too, because the potato is actually just conducting, it forms uhm, a salt bridge? So it's really just forcing electrons to try to get between the two metals.

I'm sorry, this must be super boring and not at all useful.

[demjiin]

[ It is. ]

No, you're fine. I don't know much about electricity. Do you use it inside homes?

[kyley_b]

Yeah, we do. Where I'm from we're super reliant on it, and honestly it can be a bit of a problem.

You're not, I guess. You must have like, actual fires for heat and stuff.

[demjiin]

Lanterns get used for light pretty often and stoves plus furnaces are used for heat. Sounds like yours would be a better idea with less chance of things burning down.

I'm a little confused about how lights will work on this ship. Since you're so knowledgeable about it, could you show me how the lamps work?

[ Actually Kaz figured it out in his first ten minutes aboard, but he was capitalizing on playing dumb. ]

It sounds like you're from a place kinda like earth, just like, maybe a few hundred yards ago.

Oh! Sure! I was just out to look at the glownies, I can head on over now if you want. [Because of COURSE he wants to help, and getting to feel smart is an added bonus.]

[ He thought that Kyle wouldn't know which of the bunks he had claimed, so simply waited outside for Kyle's return to the Bloodsport. Kaz is standing at the bottom of the ship's ramp, leaning on his cane. The head of which was carved to look like a crow, and seemed as relaxed as possible. At least the glitter rain had stopped so he didn't have to keep using that ridiculous umbrella.

The tailored lines of his black suit matched the black of his cane and the calf-skin gloves he was wearing; a study of a boy made up of sharp lines. Even taken from the streets of Ketterdam there was something lean and hungry about him. Something not entirely wholesome. ]

[And then there's Kyle.

Six foot two, lean as a man can be without being scrawny, wearing clothes suited to bumming around a college campus in winter. His ridiculously red curls are mostly hidden under a truly ugly green hat. He's possibly the least sophisticated looking guy currently on the planet.

There's not an ounce of guile in him, and he waves happily as he ambles over.]

[ They look about as opposite as possible. Kyle was even a little taller and a little bit older than Kaz. Of course, as soon as he saw Kyle, Kaz put on a smirk of a smile. ]

I think some of the beds have already been taken.

[ Kaz waved a hand up the ramp to indicate Kyle should follow him and with his trademark staccato steps, lead the way up the ramp. ]

Yeah, I noticed. It's kinda like being at camp or something with the bunks. I kinda used a bottom one last time I crashed here, I hope nobody cares. I think people stay elsewhere most of the time.

[Kyle follows along like a puppy.]

Probably more comfortable elsewhere. But I'm still trying to figure everything out, you know? I figure once I have an understanding of the place I can like... find a room? Make it a little homier.

Anyway, if we have access to the ship's crew list we can narrow down who our pilot and captain would be. Run our idea past em.

Ah but a ship that unlocks the door for only a select group of people is very attractive. But as far as a room goes there's little in the way of that.

[ The bunk Kaz had claimed was just that; a bunk.There were 2 of them to a room, implying the need to bunk up together. It didn't bother Kaz. When he was working his way up through the gang at times he'd end up sleeping with his back against a wall and 4 other guys in the room. Kaz was fine with the arrangement...until the first time someone threw an arm against him in sleep. Avoiding going to that room for sleeping is probably a lot of the reason Kaz doesn't sleep much now. ]

You'd better claim your spot quickly, but I won't be able to use a top bunk.

[ Kaz pointedly tapped his bad leg with his cane. ]

Oh, yeah, I guess for security. I don't think anybody here would want to hurt us, though.

[Kyle looks.] Oh! Oh, jeez, yeah. I'll steal the other bottom one unless told otherwise, I think. I'm kinda tall.

Can I ask what happened to your leg?

[demjiin]

It's alright, everyone asks. It's not a very exciting story.

[ Kaz just shrugs. ]

I jumped off a roof. Misjudged the distance and broke my leg. The bone wasn't set and it healed crooked. Walked with a limp ever since.

[ Nevermind it was the roof of a bank he and his crew had just robbed. ]

Oh, fuck, dude. That hurts like hell, I'm sorry.

You totally make the cane work though. Very sophisticated.

[demjiin]

When there's wet weather it aches, sometimes. Otherwise, I pay it little mind.

[ Kaz shrugs again. Little does Kyle know Kaz paid someone in his world to customize it; lead-lined with the crow's head made into a cudgel. The whole thing is now perfectly weighted to break bone.

At the moment Kaz indicates a lamp switch (which he deduced the working of in under five minutes) and pretends to confusion about it. He still has his calf-skin gloves on and indicates the overhead light switch across the room. There's one more reading light switch he asks Kyle about. ]

And the energy all comes from the same source?

[kyley_b]

That's not so bad, then.

[Kyle is more than happy to explain things. He's just a nerd, really, excited to know how the world works and thrilled to share that knowledge with others.]

Yeah, it does. I don't know how these ships work in terms of a power source, but back home spacecraft usually have like, solar power, radioisotope thermoelectric generators, or fuel cells. So maybe something along those lines.

[demjiin]

[ Kaz's eyes glint with a mix of curiosity and mischief. ]

Then maybe we should go find out.

Okay, cool.

I might not be able to tell, though. I've never been on a spaceship before. Like, I'm not actually someone who works with that kind of stuff back home.
