I think I've gotten as far with this as I can without help.

[Beck gestures to the large project behind him, scrap metal, wires, welded together and jury-rigged into the start of something big. Something some people here might recognize as the beginning stages of a satellite.]

I'm looking for materials, expertise, another pair hands, whatever you can offer. If I-...if we can get this thing operational-

[He pauses in thought, looking hopeful.]

Well...we might be able to get hold of someone and get out of here.

Looks like quite a project. What do you need? I've got a bunch of random equipment I've been salvaging for the past however-many months.

I don't know if 'getting out of here' is going to be so simple though.

Seriously?? I could kiss you. You ever build a satellite? We're going to need...so much, but...if we can build this...we can take control back into our hands.

[Cal arches a brow at him, an amused look crossing his face.]

Oh yeah. Whether any of it will be useful or not is another thing, but you're welcome to look through it.

[He does have to regard the man a bit curiously. This is the first person he's spoken to who seems to be actively intent on leaving.]

So what's the plan?

[Beck laughs. Yeah, that might have been a little much, but it's good to know some one out there's been doing some of the hard work all ready.]

If we can build this. And if we can get it up there- [He points skywards.] And if it doesn't burn up? We can try to send out a message. We could expand our communications. Hell, we could use to see more of this planet, or intercept messages from whoever it is keeping us here.

That's a lot of 'if's...

If we can use the shuttles, we can maybe avoid the burning up problem, at least. That's another 'if' though. But I can see how it could be beneficial.

I have a workshop set up in the northwestern quadrant of the city. I'll send you directions. It might be easier for you to come by and see what all's here rather than me bringing random parts over.

Yeah, well, it's a complex project. It'd come with a lot of 'ifs' even if we had sterile working environment and hundreds of millions of dollars to play with. But it's better than sitting around and waiting to see what they try next, right?

Sounds like a plan. I'll make my way over there, let me just secure everything here first.

Fair enough.

[He pings over the directions.]

All right. No hurry, I'll be here.

[Beck hikes his way out to Cal's workshop, a little winded by the time he's made it out there, and he stops for a while to make a better impression before actually showing himself.]

You did all this by yourself?

[He looks around with an impressed expression.]

[Cal looks up from one of the collection bins, grinning a little. On the nearby counter, his little bipedal droid buddy beeps.]

Had help here and there. But it was a lot of work clearing the place out.

[He turns and starts over towards the man, holding out a hand.]

Name's Cal Kestis. That's BeeDee-One.

Those bins along the wall on this end have stuff that's been dismantled and salvaged from things that were otherwise damaged beyond repair. I've tried to sort them out accordingly, but I guess it'd only make better sense if you've taken the engineering datapoint.

There's more that's been collected, but I haven't gotten around to picking at them. If you see anything promising though, feel free to help yourself.

[Beck looks very interested in the droid, lips splitting into a surprised grin before his attention turns back to Cal. He gives a firm handshake and a nod.]

Cal. Good to meet you. I'm Quentin Beck. BeeDee-One...did you build that too?

[He looks around, sure he can make use of almost everything here, like fate's just handing him the tools at this point.]

I've been jumping around between the different points. But I've got a bit of a background with this stuff. Seems like you do too. I appreciate this, really- you don't even know...

BeeDee? Oh no, found him. We've had some adventures before we ended up here.

[BD-1 borbles and jets down from the counter before skittering over to Cal's side, hopping up on the padawan's leg.]

I've only used the engineering datapoint. Seemed to make the most sense. I used to help scrap starships.

[Cal leans down to scoop up BD-1 so the droid can behind him on his back, nodding at Beck.]

Hey, it's no problem. We all have to look out for and help each other, right?

[Beck watches the droid, arching a curious brow.]

He? Right. Well. Good to meet you too, BeeDee. Do you wanna shake too?

[He smiles, putting on that altruistic heroic look the Avengers over use so much, nodding easily.]

That's right. And this definitely going to require as much help as we can muster.

[The droid leans out over Cal's shoulder, hooting before he shifts his balance and offers a foot out towards the man. Cal grins.]

Well, I got most of my projects cleared recently so aside from helping out with making sure the shuttles are functioning again, I'll be glad to help out where I can.

[Beck laughs and shares the grin, reaching to shake the foot with an appreciative bow of his head.]

I like him all ready.

I think the three of us are going to amazing things.

Heh. He's a very likable droid.

[Cal reaches up to give BD-1 a fist-bump once hand/footshakes have been dispensed.]

I've got a cart there, so it'll be easier to transport things over. Where's this satellite you've been working on?

I can see that.

[He chuckles warmly.]

Out east. Close to what I'm thinking used to be a train station? It's a bit of a hike.

[The padawan nods.]

We've been out that way.

[Would be some work maneuvering a full cart around there too, from what he remembers of what's left of the roads.]

How about we start picking through parts and then we'll help you take them all back?

I'll make it up to you some day.

[Beck follows the promise with a small laugh as they pick through the parts. There's a lot here to work with, more even than they can fit on the cart, but together they manage to load up a first batch.]

You sure you want to come all the way out there? I can probably manage myself, bring the cart back to you?

I don't mind the walk. I can even carry an extra box or something if there's things that won't fit.

That's cute.

You have something you want to contribute?

I'm just admiring the process.

Okay, you want to get into this.

First thought, if you haven't done this before, don't worry, easy mistake to make, you're going to have to get it up there somehow.

It had crossed my mind.

We've got a number of magic users here, not to mention ships that are occasionally functional, I think getting it up there is the least of our problems right now.

Do you have some kind of magic threshold?

Having dabbled with both, I trust the science more than the magic in the manufacturing side of things.

And you're under the impression that manufacturing a satellite is easier than manufacturing a rocket.

I'm under the impression the satellite is the more immediate need. But if you'd like to contribute? You clearly seem to have some kind of working knowledge, if you have a better idea, I'm happy to listen.

Okay, for starters, where are you? I feel like I'm growing mold from here.

No, I'm not coming over to do the cleaning for you. Seal it off, plastic sheets, fix your shit, and we'll talk again. You're going to need some tools. Make sure I'm not regretting it when I walk in there.

I run a clean site. It's not just set in the middle of an open field. I'm working with what we've got here.

Stop wasting time telling that to me and do better. I'm getting you some stuff you need, do you want to talk me through that, too?
