June-July and Calibrations

WHO: Reeve Tuesti, OTA
WHERE: Arriving In Tunnel, Calibrations Waiting Room, Reeve’s Calibration Room
WHAT: The lead up to and time around Calibrations
WHEN: June 2nd to July 10th
WARNINGS: CW: Reeve’s Calibration room may contain references to kidnapping and confinement, including of children

Man and Cat OTA
When they arrive it’s near the end of the thirty-six hour period. There had been much to do for preparation, things to pack, and honestly, he wanted to see the storm as it brewed up. It wasn’t like he’d seen it the first time, having arrived just days after the last blew itself away. But that means the man arrives with quite a bundle in his arms. Packs and papers and the few kits and tools he’s gotten himself from the replicator.

And at his side, a foot and a half tall stuffed animal of a black and white, tuxedo-cat, its own arms wrapped around coiled up papers. Was it possible for a stuffed animal to look proud of itself? Perhaps it should, because it’s got a very smart looking, dark green cape tied around its neck and a whole load of responsibility, so why wouldn’t it be happy?

“Does anyone know how long these storms typically last?” Reeve asks of anyone who comes near. And Mini stops every few steps to readjust the papers. It’s a lot harder to carry things when you don’t have fingers.

Calibrations Waiting Room

here

Calibrations [CW: Referenced (nothing explicitly depicted) kidnapping and confinement, including of children]

It’s not a bedroom, it’s an office. A rather dark one at that, most of the light coming either from the scattering of monitors, some recessed lighting high above, or two lights pointed at the rather oversized Shinra corporate logo behind the desk. The desk itself is cluttered, covered with files and papers and reports. This is clearly the desk of someone far too busy with their life. Someone who isn’t fully organized.

On it there are a few things of notable interest, like architectural reports and diagrams, a few reports on small hinges with one bearing a sticky note of ‘but why would you want them’, and there’s even a box filled with several glowing green and blue orbs. Materia. Further along, in a corner, is a framed picture of a couple that look vaguely like Reeve, his parents no doubt, and Reeve as a boy, all of them smiling in front of what looks like a farm house. The computer monitors scroll through a number of images of Midgar in various stages of being built.

Of course most of that only matters if you didn’t sit in the very comfortable office chair. Hope you like boring board meetings.

Reeve himself lounges on one of the couches in the room, looking tired. Very tired. Like he wishes he could just sleep in peace. But, if engaged, he will indeed talk.

With a glance back through the window as though he could see the chocobo again, Tony grinned and repeated, "Betsy," not quite making it to teasing with the fond tilt of his head. It was no wonder Reeve turned out so calmly sure of himself, he had Betsy and his supportive mom. Much less dangerous territory, despite how much Tony still wanted to ask, than Reeve's jealous streak, but it was clear in Reeve's language that his mom was gone, and Tony wondering what happened to her wasn't going to help either of them. He didn't find talking about his parents' death particularly gratifying. So he was left with, "What did you need distracting from?", very carefully, because obviously he had worked beyond the necessity for distraction by the time he got to Temba.

"It was," Tony provided helpfully with a wry smile, staying where he was by the window but easing his tight hug around himself like he might have followed, only to shift a hand over his heart. He opened his mouth again, tongue to his lip with a sharp inhale, only to grimace and click his teeth together before speaking; some distractions weren't welcome, look at this space he put between you. Instead, "From here, I know I would have given anything to be a kid some place like this, you know, mom 'n the bird, and..." he gestured vaguely, not sure how to better articulate the warmth built into this room. "I was out, first boarding school, when I was six, I was...distracting," he tried instead to give Reeve the context. "But I also know this place would have driven be crazy, I'd be climbing the walls as a kid. So, foolish, yeah, but unavoidable, probably. They must have understood."

That certainly wasn't the way he would have phrased it, so Tony pursed his lips and waved the phrase away dismissively, of course not, nothing like that. "Who else was going to take over dad's company?" he proposed; of course he was wanted, he had an important job to do. "I was difficult," he corrected, turning that wave down his chest before replacing his hand there, "I mean, please. We've met. If I did something like that, and mom was there to tell me to knock it off, the waterworks would start, it would be a whole scene." He shook his head, giving a pout again, not sure what they were doing talking about that asshole when they were standing in Reeve's kitchen. "You were a smart kid, for six," he muttered to get them back on track, gesturing vaguely to the boy's work he'd had on the table. "Was that all her, too, or dad?"

Watching that scene, it was hard to imagine how Reeve could have left this house feeling like a disappointment, but Tony knew it was only one of a million memories he must have had at this table and he frowned sympathetically when Reeve couldn't even say he'd heard she was proud in her own words. He took a breath at the invitation, glancing around like he could find any other excuse to keep his distance like this was a test before dropping his arms deliberately to cross to the table and pull a chair to face Reeve. As he draped himself into it, knees crossed primly, he propped his elbow on the table and offered an open palm. He didn't have to talk about her if he didn't want to.

"Your friends magic, too?" he suggested, not exactly needing a clear answer on that one; big cape guy had to be magic to justify looking like that. He was more curious how their extravagance fit into this world where Reeve had to hide that about himself, and turned out looking so...straight-laced.

With his hand ignored, Tony had to slowly curl it back to tuck apologetically against his mouth, trying to look like he meant to do that the whole time as he watched Reeve very attentively over it. That was a lot of information for him to be spilling, leaving Tony wondering about super soldiers, what exactly Shinra actually was, if Reeve deliberately meant to be threatening him or it just sounded that way, and what other, terrible surprises magic had in store for him with Vincent, all before Tony was raising his eyebrows in surprise that Reeve apparently just told the guy what his future was. Billy and Tommy had been so cagey about Tony's, and Tony didn't even think they were from the same dimension to be worrying about...whatever it was they thought they were worried about. Apparently nothing, if other people were getting their futures dictated.

"Annually's not bad," he muttered as he spread his hand away from his mouth to prop under his chin instead. "My planet doesn't self-destruct that much, that's kind of a personal problem, but I'd wager there's someone else out there on yours filling in for your little crew for the rest of the year when shit goes down. Once a month I'm tracking the big, boy, we're all going to die unless someone gets a really good punch in, sort of threat." He tried to offer a supportive smile, not feeling confident after the hand, and let it fade quickly. "Do you really not think we could be from the same planet? I know it's not the same dimension, but-- a medical experiment to make the greatest soldier on Earth that turns everybody else into a horrorshow, a big magic cape guy who doesn't talk much and just secretly saved the planet from the moon crashing into it last night, I've got those friends, too."

"I don't really know if my guy has, either, his name is Moon Knight, so I took a shot..." Tony was muttering as Reeve continued, only stopping with a chuckle as the phrase 'you don't even have chocobos' caught him off guard. He really wanted to hear what this language sounded like out loud; no wonder none of them found Tony very funny. The measured return of the office wound out any relief from that laugh, though, tightening Tony's anxiety again as he sat up straight, gaze darting once more for the next data point to acquire.

He wasn't looking around long, drawn back to Reeve as he made it sound like Tony could just be asking him about all kinds of things that Tony didn't have the faintest clue about, only to look skeptical that Reeve wanted to spend that kind of time with him, then frustrated. Which was it?

Even with that frustration furrowing his brow, Tony was still surprised and opening his mouth immediately to deny that he was offended. Again, not exactly how he would have put it, but that was a talent of Reeve's. "I didn't take the schematics back because you did something," he said, sure they had already covered this and come to their 'nothing happened' agreement. "I shouldn't have done it in the first place. That's all. I'm the only person on Earth that knows how to put one of those together, and that's by design, I--" Tony found himself clicking his jaw shut again, glancing around for his out before sighing and just abandoning the statement for Reeve to decide what crimes Tony had committed for his own noble ends. He was a quick guy.

That gesture was enough to tip Tony's restless anxiety over into pushing up from the chair, too defensive in that position with Reeve seated more imperiously in his office chair, to lean against the desk instead with his nails digging into the underside where his fingers curled around the edge, and ankles crossed like the move could have been anything like casual. At least from this position he was still taller than Reeve when he couldn't quite lift his head, watching Reeve through his lashes through his questioning with his eyes slowly narrowing, brow furrowed and pleading for Reeve to find the answers in his own question instead of making Tony say it. Why would Tony want to give him something important and precious? Nothing happened.

"Because you're brilliant enough to use it," he offered, and tried to shrug like that was all and it was nothing, only he was biting his lip and dropping his gaze down his chest to continue. "And more kind, I think, than anyone I've ever..." he took a deep breath and gave a small shake of his head, because that wasn't quite right, he knew plenty of miraculously kind people, but that kindness was rarely directed at him, not in the way that it felt like Reeve saw through him and was still kind regardless. "And so sure of your self and-- so beautiful, but you know that," he tried to grin, still down at his shoes, only to worry his lip between his teeth again. That was why. Did it make either of them feel any better?

There was no doubt in Tony's mind that Reeve would have understood it well enough to engineer and manage the RT himself if Tony had done the work and left it with Mini, like Reeve suggested. He had no reason not to, and he adored that creature-- he would have figured it out. This only made Tony narrow his eyes skeptically, though; it was Reeve's argument of his self-confidence that got Tony to move, shaking his head again and raising a hand to tap against his heart, not confidence, something else that let him just say what his feelings were a second ago, wasn't he listening? Instead of trying to impress any of that on him, frustrated enough that none of it was clear already in the ways Tony had been trying to say it-- he and Jon were really similar, weren't they? or Tony wasn't nearly as transparent as he felt he was being, that wasn't anything new-- Tony rolled his eyes and demanded, "Do you really want to argue with me right now?" Tony gave his reasons, and Reeve had no business denying any of them, just like he had no business deciding for Tony what his romantic entanglements were. Reeve's kindness really didn't extend to how Tony was feeling, making him scrub an irritated knuckle over his brow.

"I don't know how to fix this," Tony admitted, as long as they were being honest, dropping his hand to flick between them then spread over his heart like it could hold him back from Reeve as he stood too close. "You told me to stay away from you, and I'm a distraction, and you have a thing with Jon--I get it, I'm trying, but we're still having this conversation, and I feel like you don't really want to listen to me because I'm not saying what you want me to." He shrugged, mouth open, ready to say whatever it was that Reeve was looking for that had trapped them in this cycle. "I shouldn't have brought it up, I'm sorry. Is that it, have I not apologized yet? I'm sorry." Hopefully, Reeve understood what he was apologizing for, because Tony really didn't yet.

Tony had taken Reeve's claim that he didn't want to argue at face value, but it was feeling like Reeve wanted him to know it was a lie now. He kept picking at what Tony was trying to say, like he was trying to goad him into that fight so he could have a proper excuse to get his distance from Tony now that he was saddled with the all too familiar regret of his moment of weakness. That was a bitter taste in Tony's mouth, making him lick his lips between his teeth and cast a glance across the room, hoping Reeve would take the hesitation to give Tony a different option, then pushed up out of his lean onto his feet with his hands up in surrender to this fight. "Is this a game you're playing with both of us, or is it just me that gets to enjoy it? Respect him more than you respect yourself, fine, that's your personal problem, but don't act like you're doing me some favour by putting me down there with you."

And Tony was trying to give Reeve his good reason to let go, but he wasn't pushing back correctly, leaving Tony with his teeth on edge and heaving a sigh; it was hard enough trying to be the monster, Reeve didn't have to hand him all of the buttons to push to make him feel like he was supposed to kick Reeve while he was down. He should have known already that Tony wasn't that good at being a sadist. The most venom he could muster was, "I didn't ask you to," with a flinty, sidelong look, hand up between them to make sure Reeve was actually accepting what Tony was saying this time. "It feels like you're putting this on me when I haven't been asked at any point what it is I want. You come at me when we first got down here, hey, by the way, I'm into you so you have to fuck off, and you keep saying it like you don't think I'm hearing it. Are you tapped out yet? Any left?"

So, there was still some at the bottom of the barrel, Reeve had yet another way to say it, because he hadn't been clear enough yet that Tony wasn't telegraphing enough guilt for burning or confusing him or whatever-- sometimes, Tony really wasn't the audience for Reeve's poetry. But Reeve still wasn't really giving him a fight, just being disarmingly pitiful, and the touch to Tony's hand made him push down his frustration, letting his shoulders drop and stretching the tension out of his neck, still without a better place to redirect that energy. Okay, he didn't want a fight. Tangling their fingers together as Tony dropped his hand to his side tugged Reeve closer.

"If you feel like you have to be in control of every part of my life to not feel alone, nothing is going to change for you--you're going to keep repeating this pattern," he offered, twisting his free hand in the cycle that Reeve was 'used to'. That wasn't just about Tony; he knew he had his own control issues that he wasn't going to give up to anyone, but nobody Reeve was looking for that connection is was going to be happy with him if he disengaged the moment he wasn't controlling the situation, like he apparently did when he wasn't the person in Tony's life in control of his recovery. "He saved my life," Tony pointed out, the same phrase Reeve had for his own relationship with Cloud, making Tony purse his lips and raise his eyebrows expectantly. Again, it wasn't really about Jon or Cloud or even Tony, but Reeve's unbalanced expectations.

"Completely," Tony agreed, not sure which part of that he could be taking any better than his own evaluation; he was wrong about Reeve's relationship with control, and Reeve's understanding of Tony's character was bleak. Not unfounded, probably, he had no reason to expect Tony to be any more respectful of the people he was sleeping with, and plenty of reason to believe Tony was the frivolous playboy he played up. That didn't make it any less easy to hear from someone Tony thought uniquely capable of understanding him. It wouldn't be the first time the post-fuck pressure recalibration had cracked his foundations. At least he got the RT back this time. With his gesturing hand on Reeve's shoulder, he continued, "I'm trying to do what you want me to, and what's best for you and--I'm trying to take care of you. You asked me for distance, and I'm doing my best, okay?" Between the close quarters and the forced bonding experience, and Reeve's maddening push and pull, Tony thought he was doing okay.
