A vacation is sorely needed after these last few weeks, and apart from their dimension hopping adventure, this might be the first solo vacation of Billy's adult life. No parents watching over him, no twins to look after. Billy plans to enjoy himself.

The market is full of all sorts of exciting things, and Billy's eager to stock up on things the storm can't disappear on him if his magic shorts out again. Clothes, supplies, even a strange sort of idol that someone seems very keen on him purchasing, though he's not sure why.

The beach is pristine, like something out of a dream, and Billy even has one of those fancy tropical drinks. The kind that tastes so sweet you don't realize just how tipsy you're getting. And it's quickly replaced with another before it's even finished.

It feels like he and Teddy haven't had a real chance to catch up between everything that's happened since his arrival, but this is just the excuse they need to devote some time to just them. It's the sort of date night they couldn't possibly achieve back home without some serious leaning on the magic, and it's nice to pretend for a bit that things are normal again.
"So tell me about future Billy and Teddy," he prompts with a curious hum, leaning into Teddy's side, "Do we have a place yet? Have we picked a date?"

"The twins are cool, and preparing for a future of non-nerdness. So yeah, they'll be fine. Plus, you know, they're straight. Straight guys don't care about thinking of fashion on their own. They just wear whatever is popular dude-bro shit at the time, and that works for them."

And it looks bad. And it's just sad that they don't put the effort in.

"You seem pretty sure about that," Billy notes, though he's pretty sure he's right about that assessment. "I dunno, they're getting a bit better about caring. Some of them."

"They talk to me more than they talk to you," Tommy points out. "You're just their big brother. I'm the cool guy that LOOKS like a big brother and acts like a common thief with them."

So yeah, he got them to open up a bit more.

Billy laughs, and for a moment there's a painful tug at his heart strings. He misses them. This whole thing, coupled with their adventure across the dimensions...he feels like he's been apart from his family for so long now.

"Yeah, I think after you left they petitioned Mom and Dad to trade me in for you so you'd come back and hang with them."

Trade Billy in for him? Tommy pauses and frowns. That doesn't make sense.

"I'm not their family, B. At all. I'm barely your family. Why would... just because I get in trouble with them doesn't mean they shouldn't have you."

Do kids ever make sense? They're more than ready to adopt Tommy as one of their own.

He shrugs a shoulder and smiles, not seeming all that threatened by the idea of them liking Tommy. "They like you better."

Strange. Tommy was good with kids, yeah, but he didn't feel like he'd managed anything substantial. Nothing to mean he should belong. He can't help the flitting guilt on his face.

"I didn't mean to. To make them like me more. They're your brothers."

Billy still doesn't seem bothered, and offers a confused sort of smile at the apology, "It's fine. They're kids. I'm their boring big brother, they'll appreciate me when their older, I'm glad they like you."

"They'll get more bored of me as they get older. I just... I'm like ice cream before dinner. You like it until it gives you a stomach ache."

Or so Tommy believes.

Billy shakes his head disbelievingly. "Nah. Honorary Kaplan for life. You're stuck with all of us."

He tries to phrase it like he's teasing. Tommy tends to take this serious stuff easier that way.

"I don't know. I think a lot of people have learned that they're not as stuck with me as they think."

A far too honest statement and so Tommy pushes into a store, trying to escape the situation. Or just the conversation. He's not picky. Look, there was a joke on it about Orion Slave Girls. Be creeped out with him.

Billy sighs, but pushes after him. Much as he tries they keep falling back into this awkwardness.

He twists a face at the 'joke', seeming exceedingly uncomfortable, and he gives his brother a worried look. "Do you think that's serious?"

"If the show was anything like accurate, yeah," Tommy sighs, shaking his head. "People were gross in TOS."

Spoken like a nerd. Dammit, Tommy please remember not to give away that you're a closet Trekkie to your nerd brother. You've got cool cred you don't wanna give up.

"...TOS?" Billy repeats. He recognizes the acronym, but he's surprised to hear it spouted so casually from Tommy. He bites back a teasing smirk.

"Yeah, The Old Shit with Captain Sleeps With Ladies," Tommy says, thinking quick to try and cover that he totally just referred to it as the original series. Shoot.

Oh well, no way Billy picked up on it. Tommy's too smooth.

"Riker, right?" Billy returns casually, definitely not a trap, no way. Because Tommy doesn't know his TOS from his TNG, does he? Just like he doesn't know Riker's not a even a Captain dammit.

Oh man, it's SO tempting to correct him. Good thing Tommy thinks so fast. He's actively biting his lip to keep from shaking Billy because Riker is fucking awesome and sauve and Kirk is a fucking perv, and Riker was basically created to be a spiritual successor to Kirk without risking the whole DAMN SHIP.

"Yeah, the guy whose-it played. Lavar Barton?"

LeVar Burton really played Geordi, but getting that close to properly naming an actor might be it's own tell.

Do it man, correct him. Let that nerd flag fly, it'll feel so good.

Honestly, it's hard for Billy to carry on acting unsure, but he nods, "The Reading Rainbow guy? Sounds right."

"Yeah, you'd totally be a Reading Rainbow fan, wouldn't you? Bet your parents made you watch it," Tommy says, because it's easy to take this and divert them away from the Star Trek question.

His secret is safe.

He flushes a bit. "Yeah...what, it was fun. I liked books..." It's not that lame, is it?

"Nah man, it's fine. It's a good show," Tommy says quickly, he doesn't want his brother to feel bad. "You're just... I don't know, you were probably a cute kid."

"Oh yeah, super cute. It's the preteen years where it all went down hill," Billy returns easily, "Probably still not as cute as you though," he teases. He keeps the references to Tommy's return to childhood low, but sometimes he can't help himself.

"Dude, I've seen pictures of you when you were a kid. We were fucking identical," Tommy dismisses, moving on.

And he keeps moving forward through shirts. And when he sees one that says 'Klingons do it with Honor' he snickers to himself.

"I meant the more recent version of kid Tommy," he presses with a laugh.

He watches his brother flip through the shirts with a knowing smirk. He's totally a closet nerd. "So what are you thinking?"

Oh. Tommy bites his lip. Because he didn't know how to feel about that kid.

"That wasn't me, B. He didn't even look like me, not when I was that age. When WE were that age."

As for what he's thinking, he doesn't know.

"I don't know, man. Something stupid and witty."
