It's been a week. Or at least- I believe it has been?

[ The feed springs to life with a picture that makes it vastly clear that this isn't an intended transmission. The phone obviously is placed on a flat surface - Likely a table. And its owner can be spotted at the edge of the screen, focused on something else but clearly sounding tired.

Jon gives a heavy sigh and raises a hand to press the tips of his fingers against his forehead. Then he resumes talking, still not appearing to talk to anyone in particular. ]

I don't know how long I've been in that storm. I played back the recordings I made only to find them useless. Mostly static, which is... Unusual? And the most I remember now? Is that headache. That ruthless, skull-splitting headache when I tried--

[ And he cuts himself off right there, dropping his hand and leaning his head back to look at the ceiling. ]

I'm on a space ship. At least that's- That's what I've been told this is. I don't know what I'm even supposed to do here. Unless this is just another dream. A dream that has yet to turn into a nightmare. But I-- I don't remember them to be this... Long? Disconnected from whatever gruesome image they are about to paint?

Needless to say, I didn't sleep. Not that I'm aware of, at least. But what does that even mean anymore...

[ He looks back down, on the table before him - Or much rather at the old tape recorder in his hand. The latter doesn't make much of an appearance visual-wise. ]

I should probably make a proper recording before I run out of tape. This phone I was given has proven remarkably useless for such a task.

[ As he says this, Jon reaches for his phone, still lying on the table. ]

The menu alone is a nightmare to-

[ And then he actually looks at the device, pauses and scowls. ]

Is this what it's going to be now? Christ...

[ That said, he simply turns the phone off without adding anything else. ]

That's all BeeDee. He can do some pretty amazing things.

[The holomap flickers out and BD-1 warbles happily from over Cal's shoulder as the padawan turns the tablet back towards them.]

I'm sure I'd get hopelessly lost without him.

[ And now Jon is secretly wondering whether this droid could possibly map out Helen's corridors. Though the droid might run into difficulties when faced with a place that doesn't exist. ]

Then I'm glad you have him. Even though I'll admit that it's still alien for me to see a robot act so... Alive.

BeeDee's definitely got some personality. A lot of droids do. I think it's a combination of programming and acquired experience. Also, it's nicer having one as a companion than being attacked by them.

He certainly appears to be a few steps ahead of a common Roomba.

What's a Roomba?

Oh, ah... It's... It's a robot? Not like yours. They just vacuum the floor.

[ And sometimes cats ride on them, yes. Though he won't admit that he enjoys those videos. ]

Oh, like a cleaning droid? Yeah, BeeDee may not clean, but he's always been a big help.

Can you program him to clean?

[ Okay, he's curious now. That's literally all. ]

I'm not really much of a programmer myself, not that I'd even try. I think BeeDee's fine the way he is. Anyway, he wouldn't be equipped for cleaning. He's an exploration droid.

Oh, I'm not suggesting you try to, I'm just... I guess I'm just curious if it's doable. People seem to be doing this all the time where I'm from.

[ Not him. People that know their ways around computers better than him. ]

Usually most droids are designed and programmed for specific tasks. I guess while it might be possible to do, you'd also have to consider how to outfit him to do whatever tasks you expect.

[Over his shoulder, BD-1 makes a noise that sounds vaguely indignant. Cal chuckles.]

Don't worry buddy, wouldn't dream of it.

I believe the actual point in such reprogramming on Earth is to have a robot look ridiculous as it attempts to perform tasks it isn't designed for. There is no purpose behind it other than entertainment.

That seems pretty impractical. We have droids to help with all sorts of things- protocol, navigation, medical and loading.

But then there were the droid armies of the Separatists that we had to fight against.

Many things people do are not always practical. Especially in my age group. Underwater ironing is a sport and so is using cooking utensils to race down an ice track. Sometimes I'm not sure whether it's boredom or plain madness. Your world appears a lot more astute in comparison and that is admittedly difficult to accept.

[ He sort of might prefer some more sanity at times, but... He does secretly enjoy cat videos on the internet. ]

I... Wait, what? Ironing? Cooking utensils?

[Does...not...compute...]

I think nowadays most worlds are too busy either being subjugated by the Empire or overrun by it for their resources. So maybe having the time to make up such...strange forms of entertainment is actually something I can almost envy.

[ It's madness, Cal. Just madness. ]

Don't envy stupidity born from boredom, Cal. If you have something more useful to do with your life, I do consider you to be in the preferable place.

Maybe not so much what people in your world manage to come up with for that boredom, but just...not having to worry about whether someone's out to get you or if your world will be the next one targeted, used and drained.

...but I understand. I didn't before, but I kind of got pushed onto the path I'm on. I wasn't doing any good hiding.

Well, that's a fair point. The boredom these people suffer is based on a degree of lasting peace and a lacking struggle for survival. Not that I wish this struggle on anyone.

[ He's not a fan of it himself. ]

There has to be a balance.

[ Balance, huh? ]

In some cases, that is true.
