You are invited:

Who: Janet Van Dyne, Tony Stark, OTA
What: A party to celebrate the approximate 4th of July and one Steve Roger's B-day
When: The 4th of July
Where: Temba Beach
Warnings: TBD, Drinking, Creature Attacks

The beach had been transformed, perhaps not to the level Jan was used to back home, but still fairly impressive. A number of newly built beach pagodas littered the purple sands, sheer white draperies shifting with the breeze. There were tables and seating provided in each, for more intimate conversation, a larger buffet style table laid out for people to browse from. In addition, there was a table for special themed cocktails (and mocktails) for the guests. Jan had been very proud of finding local alternatives, but some of them may come with some…unintended side effects.

Jan had found a collection of opalescent conch like shells, and scattered them about liberally to serve as decorations. She and Tony had been working in secret for ages to pull this together for Steve, and the pair were dressed in white, a request she’d made of all the guests as well, but no one would be turned away if they couldn’t manage.

A dancefloor had been built, and Eddie had been offered something that must’ve been pretty damn valuable, because the metalhead had been talked into playing Disco for the party.

When the time came for cake the hosts got a little bashful. Jan had always hired out for this, but she had been sure it couldn't be all that hard to make a cake. It turned out she was wrong. But it was the best they had, and so it was presented rather sheepishly to the birthday boy and to be shared amongst the guests if any were brave enough to try it. It doesn't taste great, but at least there are no mystery side effects to go with it.

As the sun set, a host of glowing necklaces, wands and bracelets were passed out, and once it was truly dark the light show began. Rather than the more traditional fireworks, they had a series of drones lighting up the sky in a dazzling display.

However, something unexpected comes from this. As though awoken from the light, the shells Jan had so proudly decorated with were not as abandoned as she’d thought. Little legs slid free, and the creatures began to head for the nearest light source, whether that be the drones in the sky or any of the heroes with their glowing attire. And to make matters worse, there is a large SOMETHING in the water, shrieking with a sound that shakes the beach. What could it possibly want, and what does it have to do with the little shell creatures??

That almost made Tony laugh, except he was supposed to be keeping up with this story, and it didn't seem so outlandish as he caught her in a sweeping dip with a smirk. He did know what cotillion was, and the sensation of meticulously knotting his tie, and looking hopefully for his mom in the crowd for the second of eye contact that would reassure him. Most tangibly, he knew his heart had always had the same anxious flutter as he watched her face for that smile.

"And you were trouble," he tried to return, because she must have been to be so full of confidence. "So it's a good thing we're a long way from cotillion, because there's no one to stop you here. What's that thing you did, to make all of the other girls jealous...?"

Tony tried not to look too disappointed that they apparently weren't heading for the coat room after that, which was how he would prefer to be sorted. At least she was still holding his hand, so he couldn't bring himself to completely dismiss the question, only flap his free hand with a pout at the implication that there was something wrong with him. "I was having a really great dance about a second ago," he said. "I'll probably be thinking about it all night, so maybe don't make any sudden moves."

Now Tony did look annoyed, both because that was patronizing, and because he didn't really know how to answer anyway. He affected a short laugh, like he got the joke she was trying for even if it wasn't quite landing, and twisted slightly to try to find more context for this game. "I was waiting for you?" he ventured, pointing back to where she had found him. "My...whole life?"

Concerned was definitely winning out for Tony. The answer to where he was before they danced continued to elude him, and he hadn't really figured out who had invited him to this party, and he didn't know anyone that would be looking for him. With that little furrow in his brow, he still answered, "I can't imagine I have better options. Do you have a sister? She's taking her time, you solved the puzzle faster, pretty sure you've got nothing to worry about."

The only way for Tony to interpret that reaction was with wide eyes, and a glance around to find the woman that looked a lot like this one but with a big diamond. Even then, it was a difficult conclusion to believe, and when he didn't come up with any immediate evidence, he had to raise a hand to his chest to ask, me?, quite unable to believe that he had managed to convince someone to marry him, only to forget her. The rapid wrench of his heart from elation, to disappointment, to panic left him feeling light-headed.

"I feel like I've been dropped into some lucky idiot's life, he's stuck in mine right now and I don't really want to swap back. Is that cruel?" he said. "You, at least, deserve to know he doesn't appreciate it nearly enough, you can tell him that, you know, if the guilt gets to me."

Tony's eyes narrowed suspiciously with a poorly hidden smirk, and expectant lift of an eyebrow. He knew when he was being led into a bad contract; he had to at least pretend he wasn't so easy. "What's in it for me?" he encouraged, chin raised like he had high expectations and wasn't happy enough to let her lead as long as she held his hand.

There didn't seem to be a single downside to this deal that Tony could see, and he was already leaning closer, drawing her hand up to trail his fingers up her arm to her shoulder instead with a wry smile. Even as he did, he was glancing around, searching for a camera or watchful eye, and tipped his head to bring his lips to her ear as he warned, "Then you'll definitely never see him again. That makes you a co-conspirator."
