I. Barriers To Defend The People | Temba Hangar Entrance
By the end of the second night Reeve had definitely come to the conclusion that this place, even with the ships, wasn't fully safe. Those damn creatures had come and come again on the second night. And all Reeve could think about was make this place safer. Sure, he'd gone to explore some with Felwinter, but in the end, he understood that at the moment, this was one of the best places for gathering they had. The ships had food, they had something to drink, they had secure places to sleep. Sure, others had gone, but this seemed like a logical place to keep secure, especially if they needed the ships to get around. And so he'd done what seemed logical.
At least he'd gathered his other materia. Because it meant that Reeve had managed, with the help of a friendly and very large blue woman, to not only see a few trees down, but back to the hangar. And from here, Reeve had work to do.
"Alright," he said, taking his fire materia into hand. Could he do the fine control here that he sometimes had back home? Time to check. "Just burn the bark off, then find about getting this securely placed."
It was so much work. But hey, he didn't think people would begrudge it.
II. Fixing Up The Needful | Hold of the First Breath
Perhaps they were secure here at the hangar, but that didn't mean there weren't things that needed done. Like looking over this metal rod that he'd collected from the Greenhouse. Reeve sits on the floor of the First Breath, and continues his inspection of the thing. Truth was he wanted to be familiar with it, even if he couldn't use it. Repairs were important given these things were so good at taking down the plants here, and he wanted to be sure he could repair anything that needed it. And given he hadn't wanted to bother any of his shipmates if they were properly using their ship, well, working here was a courtesy.
There was some advantages of the ships that weren't in use after all.
"I cannae understand why yah keep fiddlin'," Mini said as he watched Reeve work.
"Because in an emergency, these things could be our only protection. I want to know they'll work. Which means figuring out how they DO work."
III. Just A Spell Away | Outside Hangar
Morning. Reeve yawns as he moves out through the barrier, a mug from his ship with a more liquid serving of the chocolate protein gel (listen he needed a drink). The morning has come, more has grown, and that means some upkeep. Reeve sighs and pulls a pair of materia out of his pocket with his free hand. Then, after a careful look, he throws a pair of ice spells to the edges of the road, freezing plants solid. Then he nods and throws a fire spell between them, to burn away some of what is there. Though his eyes remained on it, Reeve clearly intent on using more ice to deal with any burning.
"Damn plants. We could seriously use some garden sheers."

The flames are starting to get worse in his panic, the fire feeding off of his panic. Until they're smothered completely under the glimmering crystalized frost of ice.
Lerith looks embarrassed and away from Reeve at the remark. It seems the human was right, of course. The moment he lost the control and panic, it got worse. And the city probably would've suffered if Reeve hadn't been there to save the day. His cheeks and large pointed ears burn red. 'Sorry. I've gotten better but my fear of magic isn't so easily... extinguished.'
He walks over to the ice and places his hands on it with a shiver. It helps cool the magic simmering just under the surface, ready to burn with a wild abandon. 'I need to learn control better.'

It seemed to Reeve to be a very good solution to a very complicated problem.

Carefully Lerith tucks the materia under his arm to type on the communicator. 'I would like that. We could maybe find a place to practice... train, away from others and buildings? So no one gets hurt.' The elf wasn't going to let himself be the reason someone got hurt.
no subject
Of course they'd have to get there first, and that would mean solving the current plant problem.

'We could try to gather up the plants we cut, to take to the beach to focus on my practicing on. Or even to help around the city if fires are needed.' Winter would probably be on its way soon and if heat became an issue, the severed plants could be useful.
no subject
"That sounds a plan, once we have certainty of our safety."

Lerith straightens up and pulls flame back into his hands. There's a look of concentration and he goes to stand at a safe distance from the plants. He could do this. He could try again, though eventually he'd have to learn to do it without the safety net of Reeve's magic. Flames sprouted up in his palms, then he gestured for it to go to the plants. It hit some ice magic, sizzling out, but others caught to the plants not frozen.
He could do this.
Though even as he said it, the flames he cast didn't really stay, weakened by his own doubt. Some... managed to keep, burning at the plants. Progress was progress!
no subject
"You're doing well," he notes, smiling at the other.
no subject
With his flames eating away at the plants, Lerith lets go to let them move as they would for now. 'Thank you. My mana isn't a lot so I can't use magic for too long. But I feel useful like this.' He pulls the ice materia out from under his arm to cool his hands.
no subject
Magic had been his primary tool after all.

The flames he cast, started burning more in response to his thoughts, then seemed to back off as he got those same thoughts back under control. The ice materia helped. 'So in Thedas, they use wooden staffs for magic. Do you think a fire... what did you call this? A fire rock incorporated into a wooden staff would help ? Or maybe this ice one would be better.'
this time when I hit enter WITHOUT also hitting tab at the same time for no sane reason
At the question he considers and smiles.
"We have weapons like that too at home, sort of. My friend Aerith, she fought with staffs like you speak of, and hers seemed to make her channel her magic better. Of course, most weapons in my world have what we call Materia slots. They allow us to house the stones, and that helps people who aren't as good at magic connect with them more easily."
/patpat
But he brightens because Reeve seems to be getting what he was trying to describe. 'I was thinking like a staff of wood, with top like roots from a tree around the magic rock. Materia,' he quickly amends as he uses the word Reeve has for it. It sounds fancier than 'magic rock' at least. 'Do we have wood carvers in the city?' Or maybe with some luck he could find something.
Re: /patpat
"I learned something of working word on Eorzea."
no subject
'Do you think if I find you something, you could fashion it? Into a staff at least, and maybe later I can find something for the top instead of your materia pieces?' That was an idea at least and might help him channel his magic easier!
no subject
He thought that was what the man meant. Like... like fairy tale things from books back home.
no subject
He settles onto the ground to relax for a moment and stretch his lanky, long limbs out. 'We don't need to use the crystals for me if they're used with other things.'
no subject
"They are for magic, that is their purpose."

"I'm glad you have your magic, though. It's clearly helpful for us."
