[Open] Calibrating To Earth Life
WHO: Lauri-Ell, Open
WHERE: Calibrations Room
WHAT: Calibrations Room
WHEN: Calibrations
WARNINGS: CW: Grief about a mother Lauri never knew
Calibrations Waiting Room
Here
Calibrations
The space is clearly an apartment of some sort. Comfortable and comfortably appointed. Some of the walls are bare bricks, or plastered walls painted in a similar color. One portion is clearly set up as a living room, with a green love seat oriented toward a flat screen television, and with a coffee table. On that table was a pile of pizza boxes, cans of sosa, bags of chips, and a remote control. It's perfectly set up for some television binging. Wonder what's on the tube.
Lauri-Ell herself is stretched out on one side of this loveseat, slouching and with one leg draped over the arm of the loveseat, an orange tabby cat sitting in her lap and purring as she pets it. Her attention is fully on the screen, as if she expects something of it, but she hasn't reached to turn it on.
Nearby is a bookshelf, atop which are two framed pictures. One displays a blonde woman who looks a bit like Lauri-Ell, smiling radiantly in the arms of a black man. Next to that is a photo of a younger version of the same blond woman, held in the arms of an older woman. There again is the familial resemblance, and there is more to Lauri-Ell and the older woman than there is to the blonde girl, especially since Lauri-Ell clearly has the woman's hair.
The room transitions into a kitchenette with only a bit of wall to mime at separation. There's no door, just an open space that is too wide for a door, too narrow for 'open plan' living. Near the far window, looking out on the streets of New York, is a kitchen table with a few chairs. Leaning against it rests Lauri-Ell's Hammer, begging for attention. Could it possibly be safely touched in this space, even if it can't in real life?
Finally the kitchen has pantries one can look in, which are mostly empty, and a fridge covered in photos. The place is rather empty, like the apartment exists for someone to live in, but that person isn't around as much as they could be. Perhaps that's exactly what it's like. But given nothing in here is of a scale suitable for Lauri-Ell, it's no doubt that this place isn't properly hers.

"I see. Well, it is a large city there is a high likelihood of meeting someone from there or who has been there."
He glanced around at the objects in the room before reaching to touch the photo of the blond-haired woman.
sorry for long, it's a 'shorter' memory without good breaks
This other version of Lauri-Ell kneels before the stone is in fully covering armor, green metal over her arms and legs and the like, with a green cape. Her hammer rests across her legs. And near her, further back, is the blonde woman, who stands there in a blue jumpsuit with red boots and gloves, and a golden star that matches the one on the grave on her chest.
"It is perhaps presumptuous of me, Mari-Ell, to call you mother," the armored Lauri-Ell says to the stone. "You did not know me and I did not know you... but since the beginning, real or imagined, I felt a pull inside me that I somehow knew was you. Some call to greatness and perhaps... more than that, a call to goodness."
Tears were clearly already catching in the woman's eyes, starting to roll free.
"On many dark days I doubted the truth of that feeling, questioned where it came from. Until I met Carol. I will never doubt it again. She is you. And she is everything I always imagined you to be. I wish... I wish I had known your love. I need... I need to thank you for all you have given me, without even knowing it. And now, a sister, which is more than I ever dreamed I could have."
Lauri-Ell's head bends forward more and her fingers reach to touch the stone. A goodbye before she silently raises to her feet and the far smaller blonde woman breaks the lingering silence.
"You wanna eat her favorite dinner?" the woman said at last.
"Yes, please," Lauri-Ell agreed, and the two began walking toward the gate to head out. "I am excited."
"Well, lower your expectations. Mom loved doughnuts."
"I bet doughnuts are divine," Lauri-Ell insists, her voice still a bit tight from her grief.
"Sure, but they're hardly what I would call dinner. Mom loved 'breakfast for dinner'. Snuck it in every chance she could."
"Why must the foods be kept separate in the first place?"
"Heh, you sound just like her," Carol laughed. And then, with the women walking off, the space fades back to the apartment, where Lauri-Ell stands beside Shiro, looking sadly at the photo frame.
It's all good
When the scene ended and he was looking at Lauri-Ell again, he gave her a faint smile. "I am sorry for your loss, but I agree; you could have donuts for dinner."

But his confirmation earns a smile from Lauri-Ell. Yes, she is glad to hear it.
"I like sweet foods, these 'breakfast' ones. I like savory ones myself for the morning."
no subject
He smiled. "That's fair. Many cultures in my world traditionally foods that are considered more savory for breakfast so than why not have sweets later as well."

"Kree mostly live on military rations. So I don't think I've had much experience before coming to Earth."

As her whole life as a Kree had been between lines. She deserved something more now.

Near the front of the room a door appears, a way out, but Lauri-Ell of course doesn't know it.

"If you want to talk about it some time, I'd be willing to listen."

"Good, I shall feel free to ask for it."

"Sounds good."

"I will find you soon."
no subject
"Yeah, talk to you soon."
And he would head towards the door.
