Network / [Video]
[The sound comes in first, intermittent at first, fighting between fits of white noise.]
--hear me? Is it going through, BeeDee?
[Cal's image comes up in a flicker, frowning a little as he looks down at something, then looking towards the screen with a renewed smile.]
I think we're good, buddy.
H--lo? Anyone receiving this? If so, then we've finally -ot the comms up and running from -- other city. Signal's not as str--g, but it's a good start. --d if not I guess --- just talking to myself. Please confirm.
Cal, out.

It's nothing, really. Just kind of had a mission feel to it. I'm just glad we've gotten this far. Between having the communication system up and access to the ships for transport, it'll be a lot easier to do further work out here as needed.

If you say so, but it seemed less like a mission and more like a marathon to me. I'm now concerned the Network won't be available outside the two cities.

It was theorized that the ships themselves act as a signal boost, but even between here and Temba, they'd cut out after a certain point. There seems to be some kind of interference somewhere, but planting relays to boost the signal along the way seems to have helped, as well as setting up an antennae here, even if it's not that permanent.
Unfortunately I can't say for sure how well connections would run anywhere else on planet outside of these two cities, and we've only seen so much of it.
no subject
[ And Kaz hadn't considered the second about there being interference. ]
Since we've only seen the two examples a third would determine how the Network is actually supposed to work. Regardless, it would still be best to explore more of Sh'Ka though it seems to have a similar layout to Temba already. Which I find passing strange.
[ Kaz considers a moment. ]
I don't suppose you found any of these Graq writings while you were exploring?
no subject
That's true though- from what I can tell, the city's layout is basically Temba's, but in reverse. I'm not sure if it was just copied from Temba, or if someone else built both cities, and the Agrii and Graq just added their own personal touches.
[He shakes his head.]
Writing?

I'm of the opinion that us captives need to explore further than Temba and Sh'Ka to see if there is evidence of a third culture. Or evidence of who was here first, the Agrii or the Graq.
no subject
Not a bad idea. I think it'll be easier to identify if there's that possibility, now that we have something to reference against.

[ Kaz audibly sighs. ]
I don't like that Sh'Ka is turning into as much of a puzzle as Temba is. And there is now a real threat that the Network won't function outside those cities, which means that anyone outside of them would be cut off from anyone else.
[ That second part is said mostly out of frustration but Kaz now has to rethink his exploration plans. ]
no subject
Too easy to worry about things. Thankfully we don't have much reason to go further than the cities we have available to us. But that might also be the point.
no subject
[ And Kaz has been thwarted on exploring already so it's not like this isn't already well-known by their collective captors. ]
That's the point as far as I can tell. And if we're not exploring past the two cities, it's likely we aren't going to solve either puzzle. This is why I say we should leave to explore sooner rather than later.

...the Agrii did let us use the ships once. It was during when the first storm I'd experienced here had come up- but it hadn't come out towards the city just yet. The Agrii said the origin point seemed to be in the mountains, so some of us flew out to investigate.

Are you still in Sh'Ka at the powerplant?

We would go in four different directions, in teams of three. One direction would be towards the blinking light. One would be towards a known landmark, like the mountains. We won't find answers to Temba or Sh'Ka inside the two cities, and as you already pointed out, we haven't made any progress at what we were originally supposed to have been brought here for. If we don't at least try to explore more of this planet on foot then we're always going to be in a walled-off zoo, dancing for our captor's entertainment.
I copy. Even with a weak signal, it's better than nothing.

By the time Kaz arrived, Cal's relaxing, having some tea as he sits by the slowly dwindling fire of the campsite. Both he and BD-1 glance over towards Kaz then, a brief look of amusement touching the former's face as the conversation is quick to resume. He gestured to the hot water pot still sitting on a small slab of stone beside the fire, a silent inquiry of whether the other teen cared for some tea.]
That would mean sending out twelve people- all at once? How far would they be going? I know we've got a lot of people who know how to protect themselves and survive out in the wilderness, but would that leave enough to help look out for whoever's left in the city? I'm not trying to shoot your idea down, but there's a lot of things to take into account, and a lot of planning. Taking into account the possibility that we might lose network connection between people, that's another concern to be considered.
How have things been over there? You look like you're still in one piece.
no subject
As far as each team can get inside a week, then allowing a week to make the trip back.
[ Kaz shrugs. ]
As far as people still in the city, they would be trying to live, the same as we all have up until this point. Understand that even with those twelve people still inside the cities, there is no guarantee anyone would be able to help anyone else.
[ Kaz had talked with Ezra about the possibility of doing it before and getting at least a head start by using birds to send a message rather than the Network. But now that Ezra was gone, that idea was rendered moot. ]
While the teams would be out of the cities we'll have to assume they would be cut off from each other. It's not a perfect plan yet but I, and many others, would prefer to be doing something rather than nothing.
[He grins.]
Things've been okay. Quiet here, of course. Well, except for when the leaves fall. It's pretty crazy, they look like they petrify, so when they fall, they're stone. BeeDee had a few close-calls.
no subject
Having a set timeframe will be good. Days are long out here though. I don't know if anyone would be so eager to be out for an entire two weeks.
[Kaz was more up to date on the ongoings around Temba, in that. Cal wasn't even aware that they'd lost quite a few of their number, recently.]
If we can get out to the mountains then we'd have some vantage point of seeing if there's anything else out there, at least. It'd be a clear destination and would at least provide some definite information so far as seeing what else is out there would go.
[Although he has to shake his head at the development.]
The planet seems to have it out for us. How does that even work?
[He shrugs.]
Not a clue. I guess to be fair, we kind of missed any turn of the seasons previously because we were off-world, so who knows what to expect around here?
How're things back in Temba?
[And there really is no argument there. The most he does in response is wrinkle his nose, but that's all.
While he still smiles, it slowly becomes subdued.]
Ah, things have...gotten quieter, actually. There were some moments, but nothing too out of the ordinary.
no subject
[ Kaz and Ezra had been closer so when Ezra, in particular, was gone as well as a couple of others, Kaz noticed. ]
All the more reason to be doing more exploring. The problem is how to bring all of us captives together to keep any mention of exploring off the Network.
Oh? Well...that's good, I guess? Although things have been pretty tame for some time now. Can't help but wonder when that might change.
no subject
Well, word of mouth is probably the only other option. Maybe speak to people you think would be interested in doing something like this, and they can ask people in turn.
no subject
[Video]
I'm not gonna complain if we're granted some time between things, but it never hurts to be prepared.
no subject
Then I will ask you to do the same; by way of word of mouth. Anyone you think would listen, and then ask the person you're telling to tell someone else. But under no circumstances does anyone mention it on the Network.
no subject
All right, got it. Want me to have them and whoever they find that might be interested to contact you directly? Or..?
no subject
No need for that, yet. As you said, spreading information by word of mouth will be slower, so keep it between yourself and whoever you are talking to. I'll speak with you later about the next step.
no subject
Okay. Then I'll keep that in mind when I head back to Temba.
Hey. Let me know when you get back in.
Will do.
