They weren't teenagers. If he was a teen he could have let it go more easily. He fell in and out of love so easily as a teen, and out easier han in because he knew he wasn't good enough for people. Because he didn't want to lose them and hurt from that. No, he was hurting because this was something a bit less puppy love and a bit more adult dealing with loved and lost and never loved before at the same time in a weird way.

"First, don't call me sweetheart, ever. Second, I'm talking about it because I guess I wanted an opinion from you."
