"Depends on which sense of 'worried' you mean," she said thoughtfully, lacing her fingers together and stretching her arms up above her head as they walked, like a plant reaching for the sun.

"My gut's telling me something's going on under the surface with him: but that might be trauma resulting from everything that happened. It's hard to say just yet. Mostly, he's worried that he's really capable of some of the things he did and regrets. I told him to just be self-aware and reach out for help if he needs it."

Starling doesn't want to believe that any of them are honestly that calculating or cruel, especially some of the things that Beck shared with her. But she also knows that the mind is a complicated place, and people can be worlds different at heart from what they present to others.

"Honestly, the best practice for all of us is to be aware of ourselves going forward. Mindful. Patient with each other." She sighs slowly. "I'm no headshrinker, but I don't want this to dissolve into a bunch of grudges held over things that happened when we weren't ourselves. It would cause the restoration effort a lot more harm than good."
