The hallway before them has a few gradual zigs and zags that Donnie wouldn't be surprised if they'd been purposefully so to make them doubt whether or not they'd taken the right path after all. But in the end he's figured they couldn't have turned nearly far enough to be heading backwards, and indeed the way before straightens out again.
