Why would he just make you the same? The technology already exists, and he doesn't improve on it?

It's an uphill battle. Not everyone is so open to the idea. They'll celebrate heroes like the Human Torch, then call their synthetic neighbour a toy. Most people don't have them in their houses, though. It is hard to imagine living with an android and not seeing any humanity in them.
