There's no hiding the wince at that clarification. "O-oh..." Donnie says, startled into silence. Death is it's own beast to deal with, and thus far he's not had to experience such a loss of any kind. It's difficult to imagine, but there's no doubting Peter's words to be truth.

"When you realize your actions directly resulted in someone else's death it changes you."

Donnie swallows, looking towards the floor.

The attempt to change the subject startles him a different way, and he grabs onto that thread, shaking his head even as he forces a smile. A smile that becomes less forced as he explains.
