For a little bit it seems like the space is actively trying to stop Link from climbing over the shelf; the internal layers seem to randomly shift underfoot when he isn't looking, in an apparent attempt to make Link fall, and as he gets closer to the top the books on the upper shelves start randomly falling out and over onto his arms and fingers. But none of it should be enough to completely deter someone as determined (and as skilled a climber) as Link. Eventually, he crests the top.
There aren't more bookshelves on the other side. Instead, Link finds himself crawling on the floor leading to a blank, sterile-looking room, empty except for a reading desk and a chair. Over his head is a swinging gate, with a sign bolted over the chain and lock holding it closed: RESTRICTED: AUTHORIZED PERSONELL ONLY
