Link spends a little while trying to solve the maze - exploring the path, seeing where it will take him. He half expects to find a hidden chest somewhere, filled with a gemstone or a shiny new weapon.

Eventually, though, Link gets bored of the exploration - and turns his attention to the books. He picks one at random, curious to see what is inside.
